$1,199.99 on Best Buy Website

I already replied to you on the article, but to sum it up: You're making the common mistake online of taking online sites too seriously.

A MAJORITY of consumers don't read these sites. Of those that do, a Majority of those consumers actually apply rational thought. only an extreme minority are idiots but unfortunately, that minority is also more likely than any other group to feel the urge to comment and express their outrage.

Yes, Android Central posted on this rumor, if for no other reason than to stop people from (most likely) flooding their inbox. You'll notice that in the TITLE of the post as well as in the body they mentioned that this was most likely not the price, and they mentioned the placeholder issue. They're (so far) the ONLY blog to make this distinction.

Reporting on rumors isn't an issue. Treating them as fact is.

As I replied on the front page, you can rail against this all you want, but you're fighting a losing battle. I don't disagree with anything you've said, but Moto comes out of this looking dumb. They are letting their device launch get co-opted by rumors and leaks.

This isn't my first rodeo, and I don't believe everything I read. I hate Apple, but launching devices is the one thing they do very well. If this were an Apple launch, the device would have had a launch date and price attached at the end of the CES presentation. Instead, it's been a month of rumors and leaks, each one more ridiculous than the next. At some point Moto needs to take control, regardless of whether it "sets pricing" or not.

I disagree. But maybe you associate with a differant type of person. For me an official announcement would trump rumors and leaks.

I don't see a lot of freaking out going on. I read a lot of discussion and people making it clear that "if" said rumor is true then explaining how they would react.

So your idea is no information is better then a little. I can understand that, not how I would do things. But I also would probably have done a better job of controlling the spin on this thing.

They have been clear that you will need to upgrade to 4G when it is available, which was a good move.

To say that the price wil lbe $X plus required 1 time activation and a future 4G upgrade if you choose to be released by Y date, would have been a good move.

I disagree with letting your product launch being taken over by rumors and leaks.

That's not true. They will discuss anything, but don't assume they believe it just because they are talking about it.

We're not talking about who we associate with. The majority of people I associate with know this entire controversy is BS.

I assume they believe it because they're quite clearly FREAKING OUT ABOUT IT. I'm not talking about this thread only, I'm talking about the main news post, and the morons over in the Engadget comments. IF they were just discussing it, they wouldn't be calling it fail pricing, or blaming motorola and Verizon for a leak they have ABSOLUTELY no control over.

Companies like best buy create their ads sometimes months in advance because they have to. This is why stuff always leaks from them first and there is nothing verizon can do to stop this.

The device DOES NOT REQUIRE ACTIVATION. Period. This can be confirmed by ANY verizon rep who's taken the required training.

There IS NO PRODUCT LAUNCH YET. There is no product launch until Motorola and Verizon release a press release. That's what I'm trying to say. And no, they can't control the spin right now. it's pointless to try. The issue is that people are so desperate to see what's coming that they'll latch onto any rumor, no matter how stupid. And sites like Engadget (and papers like the WSJ) realized that they can report these rumors, be completely wrong, and suffer NO BACKLASH for it even as it drives traffic.

Motorola and Verizon CANNOT provent leaks like this because people are actively looking for them. They can't spin them because it is against confidentiality agreements to talk about a product before it's officially announced and priced.

They can't call best buy out for being stupid because that's a business partner that makes both companies a lot of money.

The ONLY thing that can happen is for people to wake up and start thinking, which they won't because it's a lot easier to freak out over rumors.

They'll take control once they announce the product.

The problem is people trying so hard to get the first "scoop" that they stop fact checking.

Motorola doesn't look anything because only 1% (or less) of their consumers are actually reading and believing these rumors. and that 1% would believe anything anyway.

Discussing rumors on a tech blog isn't an issue. Getting all bent out of shape over people doing it is.

They're not discussing, they're freaking out.

And I sell Verizon. I have to deal with the idiots in my store. their issues start because of leaks like this one (from sites like Engadget), so yes, I have a valid reason for being pissed off about them.

EDIT: Nevermind. I just remembered you're the same guy who was arguing about the required activation. I think you just disagree with people on principle. Have fun with that.

I was't arguing. I was trying to figure out what other people thought, compared to what my understanding was. A few people had some very logical points and I was glad to understand more of the process. In the end it came down to semantics and I was satisfied with the explanation I was given.

No you really don't have a valid reason. Just because you work in retail and have to answer questions by people does not mean that you know their motivation.

I don't hunt around tech site after tech site awaiting the launch of each product or try and be the one that answers every question out there in order to give my shallow life experience. So I don't really know what is said on other sites. The only reason I am here is because I was interested in the Xoom at one time.

So if you want to take how people are at other sites and bring your outrage over it here and infect this site with the same atmosphere then that is on you. So freak out all you like. However, I would recommend you engage each forum in a manner common to how that forum currently is.

I don't see freaking out here, just generally pleasant discussion. So next time you put on your Verizon name tag and get those “idiot” customers remember that if it wasn’t for their lack of knowledge you would not have the pleasure of working in such a high demand field like retail.

Guys, the debate and discussion here is excellent, and it's totally what this forum is here for. But let's try to all keep a level head as well. I have zero issue with constructive criticism and healthy debate, but we all need to take a step back and remain constructive and respectful to each other. :)

Retail isn't a pleasure, especially in the American Cellphone industry. Having "idiot" customers makes the job worse, not better.

@menno man can't we just have some fun and talk about what we want. Your freaking more than anyone trying to get your point across. This is all fun and games trying to get info about something like the xoom. If you feel were all freaking idiots go post someplace that people care. Now back to the OMG 1,300!!!! Im definitely not getting it at that price.

Lol :-) Good post

+1

I pretty much talked myself into buying it for $799 but that's as high as I'm willing to go. I have to wonder if the Tab 2 will be priced higher than the Xoom. What did the Tab launch at? $499/$599? It looks like tablets are going to be niche market.

The Tab launched at $599 (Sprint/Verizon/Tmobile) and $649 ATT.

And now the bestbuy.com/xoom page is gone. Nice work. :) Looks like the product page at https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...%26st%3Dxoom%26cp%3D1%26lp%3D1&token=Js_NmXAx is still there.

The Tab II probably won't be any cheaper than the Xoom, or else Samsung definitely would have mentioned the price in the announcement today. How else would they stop people from buying the Xoom in 11 days?

Well I wish verizon had nothing to do with this device. Carriers in the US want to control everything. I wish verizon's name want even on the device. That its why I like the nexus line of phones, carriers have nothing to do with the nexus phones only to give them signal and data. You don't see the carriers name on the nexus phones. Carriers should just supply signal, data and stop jacking up the phones.

So contract 800$ no contract 1200$. That is little insane

So Ridiclious! Hopefully the Samsung Tab 10.1 is cheaper and Wifi Version as well.

I want a XOOM but damn that price...

There is no contract beyond the 1 month activation, PERIOD!

Why are people making things up? Sure, even the $800/1 month deal is still speculation/rumor considering no official PR has come out; its the most factual information we have as of now.

Common sense, we have lost.

O no! They deleted it so I guess they wont sell it and they are going to burn all the xooms. ;)
