1.6 aperture for BOTH rear cameras

the AI capabilities in the camera are going to be the most advanced feature for this device and it'll offer better portrait mode.

I wonder how f1.6 has been achieved on this phone?

The holy grail for camera lens junkies is standard lenses @ 1.4 or even the coveted f1.2 aperture.
Are the smartphone optics actually that good currently or is this software trickery now?

As a camera buff I'd rather have great glass and a good eye vs. smartphone after processing to fool me into believing my so-so shot was actually OK.

I'm sure an updates can fix it a little.
That's true, but I would never purchase a phone based on what can be fixed or improved in updates. I buy it with the idea that it is what it is and that it will never be anything other than that. There's less disappointment that way.

It depends on who is making the promise. I bought my iPhone 7 Plus based on the commitment that it would get portrait mode. And it did.

I guess I don't trust any company when it makes promises about what they will deliver after you make the purchase, including Apple. On their professional video editing software they kept promising features that they never delivered on so my experience is the polar opposite of yours.
