That would be awesome.... Im so amped to call VZW in a few hours about my early upgrade, if eveything goes well ill have my droid at the end of today. I was hopin to pick it up with 2.1 but ill take 2.01 any day over BB 5.0. I just hope VZW honors what they noted on my account.
Back on topic, I know everyone is antsy but google has been fantastic with upgrades so far it seems, they have been rolling out new features and fixes much faster than many other platforms. We should all be excited about the future android holds and the direction the platform is going.

Edit: My long and painful days with the storm are finally done, VZW finally approved an upgrade for me and I can now join the droid community in anxiously awaiting 2.1 :D

Congrats! I am also an ex-BB user (as i'm sure a lot of us are in this Forum), and I have to say, i'm glad I made the change! My girlfriend had a storm, and then a Storm 2 (verizon did a free replacement after her storm broke 3 times in 3 months), and she keeps eying my Droid enviously. You made a good choice.

OK... I guess I have to jump into this discussion as well. I'm an ex-BB user also.

I have avoided the whole game of "anxiously waiting..." "I know a guy who works at Verizon and they said..." and "I heard the release date was...."

But, I just can't resist. I'm hooked. I'm waiting in line and wanted to just throw in my $.02 about anxiety / impatience / waiting / guessing.

It sucks to want this and NOT have a date in mind. I agree with a previous poster - just expect March / April and then we'll be pleasantly surprised by anything sooner.

Also a former storm owner, glad I made the switch. Waiting for an update on this platform is relaxing compared to crackberry lol. People waited months to get an update from RIM like we got (2.0.1) from google.

Yeah, but on Crackberry, you would at least get the pre-production leaks to tide you over. :D

I dumped my Storm after 12 months and five units (each time I would bring it to Verizon and say "Can you please fix this"........and each time they just handed me another phone and whisper "user error".......lol. The Droid just kicks total ass and I feel like such a putz for sticking with the Storm for so long. Thank you Droid! (and bring on the update!)

That's true, I was able to throw 5.0 on my Curve to hold me over.

....Until it started lagging and having memory leaks. I had 6 apps on the phone, and I kept getting the "low memory" warning.

On another note (and to keep this forum on track, haha), I wonder what is taking 2.1 so long. It seems to work fine on rooted Droids, so there can't be that much to change, I would think.

Maybe they are putting in app storage on SD cards? (Yeah, right. I can dream, at least).

There are plenty of new ROM's out there to try which are making the wait easier for me.

This might make me sound simple, but usually all I do when I get bored is change my app/widget setup or configuration, and change my wallpaper. That usually tides me over for...a week.

Haha I am somehow similar. I'll rearrange stuff on my phone or install random apps or design stuff with Photoshop for my phone (skins/wallpapers) or just mess with the configuration lol

Ah i wanna root and install custom roms..then I remember how sweet my phone already is...few weeks and 2.1 should be on our phones...

Root is great, trust me. I'm loving it so far :)

Only worry I have with Root is not being able to get the OTA update when 2.1 is finally pushed. I am good with computers but haven't made the....effort, I guess, in figuring out how all this works. I tried with my BB but my friend (who is huge into the Crackberry mod scene) just took over, and all my skills went unused.

What exactly does Root disable (quick answer - i'm sure there's a thread that could discuss this further)? I know there are benefits, but none that have convinced me to change. I primarily want my phone to be speedy, and everything to work (i.e. the keyboard light not working on the 2.1 crack is unacceptable for me). Also, I couldn't really give two hoots for multitouch. I like double-tap better.

Nothing gets disabled with root. Unless, you install ROM's, then it might disable it. And getting back to factory settings is just as easy as rooting. Just boot up into recovery mode, and run a zip file and bam, root enabled. Same for getting out of root.

It really is simple.

How I did it:
Easy way to Root

Thanks you for the info! Still torn, will probably have to flip a coin to decide, haha.

I'm not a fan of root, primarily because I thought it was a one way street. Thanks for the info, I didn't know it could be easily reversed.

Yea it's so convenient. Enables you to do much more and if you don't like it, then just revert back. I used to think rooting was difficult and only for advanced users (I'm pretty tech savvy, but I have very few experience with Android OS), I was wrong :p

If you want a few 2.1 goodies like the gallery or the launcher without rooting, check out the 2.1 app drawer thread. I got both without rooting and I like them.

I did root but reverted back to stock. I just added massive apps and I get the cool 2.1 gallery look and home ++ also got me 7 screen even tho I don't think I need that much.
