16GB - that really sucks... Does it?

Just to chime in but if you work in a large building with no service why can't you just play your uploaded music on your work computer from Google Music?
This argument is so stupid anyway. All the ing and moaning in the world isn't going to change jack.
The storage is what it is. Why not toss around ideas on how to deal with those "limits" rather than shout each other down.

The bottom line is that not including an SD card slot slashed the functionality of this phone dramatically. There's absolutely no practical reason to have done this, at least from the consumer's perspective. Perhaps Google, anticipating the high demand that this phone would generate, did this to shrink the amount of people interested in purchasing one. Another good guess is that it was done to force users into the cloud.

Either way it was a terrible decision.

Getting back on topic though, I am a music producer and use a 16gb SGSIII that I rely on heavily for many aspects of my recording and mixing processes. I clear what I don't need and keep what I do at the time being. Files interfering with my system.... that I'd like access to but are very large, I keep on one of my many SD cards ;)

SD cards.. that I bring with me to Miami, lend out to my engineers so I don't have to be physically present during every round of mixing if it's unnecessary... SD cards that my two main rappers are due to return to me at the start of next week, usually chalk full of new ideas and instrumentals.

I'd love to get a Nexus4 for myself but it looks like i'll be getting one for my gf instead :)

Bottom line: the Cloud has NOT replaced the functionality, practicality, and overall convenience of SD cards

Why settle to carry several devices?
The point of smartphones is to bring all those things together. My gs3 with 64GB with cm 10 m2 is the best mp3 player. The best movie player, the best turn by turn voice navigation system. And the best mobile gaming system.

They've talked multiple times about why they're doing that over the past couple years, and no, it's not for either of those reasons. The great thing about Android, compared to iOS, is if you really need SD support, you can buy a different phone that has it. Some people don't care about SD support, and don't care about storage, and they'll buy the Nexus 4. Someone who really cares about SD support can simply buy something else. The big interest in the Nexus 4 is the price - it's damn good for the price, but it doesn't offer everything.

So u want us to keep re-downloading songs in batches over and over (If u don't do it in batches then u might as well have them on u'r phone permanently) so we can listen to them.... And be on the look out for WiFi to make this work... And then do another batch... And another batch... LOL Cloud FAIL!!!

Yes, that is much less confusing than using a MicroSd CARD. All i see is a box to check to hide unavailable music when offline.
Not sure how to do this on my phone since i never have. If i have to add it to the queue, that is just a big time consumer and a pain in the a**.

If I was a person who wanted to watch heaps of movies and listen to all my songs while traveling then I would simply use USB OTG. However, this isn't always a solution as it requires a USB stick/reader dangling off your device.
Still, it's one of Androids advantages.

A OTG cable and drive makes sense for a tablet... Specially if u carry it in a case with a pocket(s)... But for a phone u stick in u'r pocket and go... Carrying around a OTG cable + a USB stick is a joke... Unless all u wear are cargo pants or cargo shorts... Or if u velcro the OTG cable and usb drive to the back of u'r phone...

There are no multiple Nexus phones out there that include 32GB or a SD card slot(I would prefer a SD card slot... That way we can all buy a $299 8GB Nexus 4 and we can choose to use a SD card of what ever size we need)... The Nexus 4 will be the only Android phone getting updates within a week or two of each new version or bug fixes available for Android.... No other Android device will have this major feature... So the reason why some of use keep complaining about the lack of extra storage is that we can not go out there and buy a HTC, Samsung, LG, Acer, Asus, etc device that will be stock Android and that won't take 6 months + to get carrier approved updates... Google is the only supplier of this devices... Not even if we buy it unlock or import them from some other market.... Updates take months and months... There is no other choice but Nexus 4...

U don't read anybody else complaining about the Nexus 7 or Nexus 10 lack of SD card slot or problem with the storage amount... The reason is... The N7 & N10 are now 16GB / 32GB devices.... That is all we are asking for for the Nexus 4....

Yeah i have Google Music but it still takes data to use it and if im using it a hour most days, that would eat up my data pretty quick. Dont know why some cant understand that.

An hour of data for music is about 24-30mb. That's less than 1GB a month, even assuming you never have wifi access while playing music.

Right, and that's the tradeoff you have to make if you want a Nexus. Google is NOT going to release a Nexus 4 with removable storage. So figure out what's more important to you: storage or quick android updates, and make your decision accordingly.

No, but there are multiple Android phones, and that's the most important thing.

If you're willing to use a custom ROM, you can expect once CM or some other mod is out there for your device, you'll get the updates quite quickly as well. That's still a compromise, but again, no phone out there yet is perfect that does everything that you want. And again, the Nexus 4 gives you a ton for $300, you expect some trade offs at that price.

All true but I don't know why you'd keep it connected in your pocket. And a USB stick and cable could fit in my jeans.
Still it's not ideal.

Hi,
I have been wondering - why do people need over 16GB in a phone?

Discuss! :D

I guess my main subjects for response would be about music, video and games because the rest aren't that big of a deal for me. I am no upper-class photographer so the camera works just fine for me. As for music, I am very into music and can say I listen to almost every single song out of the 6800+ I have in my collection. I have never been one to use my phone for music because storage and battery life has always been an issue so I have a 160GB iPod classic for that but I do put a few of my favorite bands on my phone just for back up for situations like my iPod dying or I don't have my iPod with. I completely agree that it is an insult to watch a great movie on a pitiful screen. Lastly I was never one for playing an intense game on a phone considering I have always been a console and PC gamer and playing a game on a phone has never compared. Something like Angry Birds, Cut the Rope or other puzzle and casual games are something I would play on a phone but nothing like Dead Space or N. O. V. A.

I have always been someone who enjoys simplicity and like to know what data is where and ridding my system's of useless data/apps.
I plan on buying the 16gb and I would agree that it's that ego-boosting reason but I like having that extra space if I ever need it.

If the Nexus 4 was just a phone like the SGIII or SG Note 2 or the Moto Maxx's or the HTC One +'s or the HTC DNA etc... Then we wouldn't be discussing what might be missing from it... But the Nexus 4 is the only phone for the next two year that will receive updates within weeks of a new Android announcement... All the other phones will have to wait 4-6 Months if not longer... That is what makes what some of us see as a major shortcoming such a big deal.... It's our only choice.... ...

No. Not the only choice. You can unlock many if those other devices and flash with a 3rd party ROM based on AOSP. I know, that's more work, but it is an option that many exercise.

And costs way, way more than the 16gb N4 for $349.

I plan to flash whatever Nexus 4 I get with Hybrid PA/AOKP/LS/COM10 Rom... But the different non Nexus devices out there don't always get everything fully working on 3rd party Roms or u have to wait a long time for someone to create a new driver or finds a workaround... This happens a lot with cameras... The hardware makers keep drivers and other code a secret... Just recently CM & XDA was complaining about Samsung lack of help for the 3rd party Rom community, specially when it came to their latest cpu's... That is why a Nexus device is the best choice for ASOP & 3rd party Rom updates...

Also having limited data space is not ideal for 3rd Rom flashers... Specially if u do multiple backups of u'r phone which could easily hit close to a gig of space on it...

Decided to get a Nexus 4 until December... Will let the cobwebs & rumors died down before getting one... Hopefully they will be back in stock in Dec. & will will know what innards the Nexus 4 holds...
