2.2 date for D2 before X is whack!!!

Also, don't forget that Moto has to create and include a few patches in 2.2 for the X such as a patch to fix the volume bug in the X. The D2 doesn't need any patches, well at least not yet until users find problems with it.

The voice of reason. I hate to say this and please don't flame me, but most of you folks sound just like all of us BB users when the Storm 1/ Storm 2 came out and we were waiting on updates and loading leaked software. One can tell that most of you are very young and have never worked in the software/hardware industry. It simply takes time to get through all the testing and QA. The worst thing they could do with Froyo is to release it and it fall flat on it's face! I'd rather be patient and get better quality. I know, I've had a new release brick my phone more than once! ;)

As one of those former storm 1 users, I would say there if a major difference....the upgrade to 2.2 is, as we say in the software biz, a "nice to have". The storm 1, by contrast, was almost unusable when it came out. I was on the edge of my seat for storm updates only so that I could use the darn thing; I can certainly live without the DX upgrade. Apples and oranges a far as I'm concerned. You are dead on point with regard to bring patient for a release.

I would rather them hold it and put a few more bug fixes in (wifi, gps, etc.). For all you anxious ones what are you really wanting so badly? This is not a rhetorical question. I really want to know what features you are dying to have. I've watched serveral videos and read all the feature docs and just don't see what all the excitement is about. I'm more interested in rooting my phone after it comes out so I can get free tethering. The rest of the features (as others have stated) are nice-to-haves. Now, if it promises a ton of stability and extended battery life then I'm excited too.

Who knows, maybe they are delaying 2.2 so they can completely remove the bloatware and blur. We keep asking, maybe they are being nice and surprising us.

I think I heard the release without bloatware and blur is supposed to have free wifi tethering as well!

... and yes, this is sarcasm, but is just as likely unfortunately. Thankfully with root we should eventually be able to do both. Wifi tethering can already be enabled, just need to get rid of the bloat.

It is amazing how many subjects like this comes up regularly, so many want everything now and there is always so many reasons of why the company decides to spite the customer by giving something to another before they give to them, its time to put the X-Files theories away, the company will always make a sound decision on how to approach issuing updates and fixes, to complain because you think you are more deserving than another is ridiculous, they are not intending to be evil or vindictive. The approach they took is sound, they release the update to the devices that has been around that is basically still working on the original back dated codes and the update was probably built and tested with the original codes in mind, but the newer devices all has modified codes to add new features or UI modifications that usually takes more work to resolve compatibility issues..

Now for those that has the impression that the Droid 2 and Droid X is basically the same device and if they was able to release it to Droid 2 that the Droid X should have received it at the same time is also not thinking rationally, just because something looks the same does not make it the same in the programming world and I am sure there is other items that needs to be verified before releasing it to Droid X users.. Also it is not like they are talking about releasing update next year, they are speaking of a few weeks, now if it was released now and end up having major bugs then so many people will be posting statements like "Problems with update Get It Fixed Now!!"

My device has been working well and I do not see a situation that makes the release of update a higher priority over others, Basically they cant win no matter what they do.

I was really saying the company was being spiteful and doing this on purpose I was simply thinking of it from a stand point if realism. Where the superior device that clearly is what everyone is using/wanting/waiting for is now behind a new inferior device. Yes my phone works great for the most part. However the call quality, speaker volume and quality, and 3g 1x issues kind of need to be arsed and I figured verizon might hit there new Super I phone killer take over the market device with the update that will continue to move them up the ladder

All I heard around here before I bought my Moto Droid X was how HTC is so slow in updating their phones. I am now seeing the HTC Evo already upgraded to Froyo and the Incredible about to get Froyo on the 18th...all before the X gets their hands on it. So much for HTC being slower than Moto.

I'd say it deserves 2.2 at the same time as the Droid 2.

When you start to look at the two devices hardware wise it becomes even more apparent as the two devices are blatantly identical (save for the fact that the D2 has a physical keyboard, obviously) and so since they're running the same OS and same software UI skin, it only makes sense for the X to get it at release or actually before, as they don't manufacture these devices on August 11th and have THOSE devices made on the 11th in store on the 12th, it takes a few weeks of manufacturing and shipping distribution to get them in stores. That means that a release-ready version of 2.2 running this ghetto Blur that the X has has been ready for at least a couple weeks now.

Pretty pissed off myself that we are waiting till September...

While the D2 and the DX have very similar specs each software build has to be optimized for the specific phone. Each of you whiners complaining "Why doesn't my DX have 2.2 when the D2 does? They're identical. :( " Try loading the D2's build on your DX and see if you like having a 4.3" paperweight.

An important point no one has brought up yet is that an OTA has to be approved by Moto and by VZW before its brought out and be glad for that. You don't want a rushed build being pushed to your phone too quick a la the OG and the Evo. A few more weeks won't kill you and if you really wanted to have the newest builds right away you'd have a Nexus or a Dev Phone, not a bloated VZW phone. Be happy you have an alternate sources for updates, go over to Crackberry and see how they respond to every single leaked OS. With Android you can root and ROM your device if you want to have the latest and greatest but good luck getting customer service to help you when it doesn't work. Remember VZW isn't releasing this update for those of us in here. Its for soccer moms in Fresno they have to do a little Quality Assurance first.

The Dinc has had more time to work out the bugs. The DX needs a couple of weeks so they can squash a few more when they OTA 2.2. And the Droid 2...well, it may have Froyo, but it's probably going to have to live with the bugs it ships with until mid-late September (unless there is something major that can be fixed in a small OTA in a week or so).

It's fine. I really, really want Froyo, and I know you guys do too, but it'll come, and the phone will be even more solid as a result of that extra time. So sit back and relax...you'll need to save your energy for the months of agonizing over when we're going to get our Gingerbread OTA!!!!

(BTW, rather than being jealous, I'm happy that HTC seems to have worked out a lot of its problems with updating the OS to their phones...it's a good thing for Android for all the major phones to get upgraded ASAP).

Both of these devices are using the Sense UI version on Android, so no wonder they were able to release the update to both of theses devices after so little amount of time...

I don't consider it "whining" to want the device that most of us had to wait for much longer than necessary to have an updated OS. With all of the extra time that they had with both DINC and the DX you would think that would be enough time to work out the bugs. I mean they made all of us wait far too long to get these devices. Just my opinion.

Exactly. Its been one long wait game and lots of hype. They've had plenty of time to fix things.

And talking about whining? All you people who had to "wait months for updates on your bb's or hero's" or whatever. I came from an LG Voyager. There WAS no update. It was just here's your POS phone and thats it. Before that? Another little LG Flip phone. I've never known what its like to have a nice phone. I've been waiting and waiting for the time to get one, and when Motorola (and even Adobe) hype up this device like mad for 2.2, I kinda expect 2.2 sometime soon after I purchase it. 2 months is not some time soon.

As far as patience is concerned don't even get me started... I originally ordered a Droid Incredible, waited a whole month for it to ship. It finally ships, my friend at Verizon calls me to tell me he has a tracking number and sure enough waddya know, it went to the wrong address and the people there denied the package, meaning it wasn't "hey this is the wrong address" it was "we don't want it" so it got RETURNED to Fort Worth, TX without even coming in contact with me. A whole month wasted for nothing. Then after 3 days straight on the phones with Verizon/Fedex trying to reroute it I just gave up. They wouldn't budge. So there I was, pissed as anything and my friend tells me about the X. Okay... another month of waiting. So I spent 2 whole months teetering on the edge of excitement for my first smart-phone. Now that I have my X I am happy, but is it REALLY so bad to be excited about an update (more like a feature) of a phone this hyped up? I'm now 3 months in the barrel for the features that were hyped up on this device...

Ok done ranting. Just saying people are so quick to say "whiners" but everyone goes through a different experience. If people are excited for something let them be excited. Just because your phone isn't as important to you or you're not hardcore into it and are satisfied enough to wait however many months doesn't mean everyone else is. My 2 pennies.

I had the first and second voyagers. Still have them activated and being used the first one had two os updates and tbe second had one. U just cant dl over the air had to take the store for updates and 90% of users dont know this. As stated before im happy with my X amd am in no russh for 2.2

I don't think anyone is downplaying the excitement; I can't wait either. But there's a difference between "wow, I can't wait for the X to get updated" and a thread about how Motorola is screwing X users because we aren't getting the update before the D2 ships (or before it goes OTA to the D1, etc). There's no malfeasance on the part of Motorola here, and the fact that they delayed the 2.2 OTA for us till September is probably going to help us, not hurt us, since they are also working to fix some bugs in the phone.

So by all means, share the excitement that I think everyone here has for Froyo. I know I'm going to be watching the blog posts on the Adobe Android Summit today with bated breath and more than a large helping of envy (since we don't have Flash yet) but don't confuse the positive emotion of anticipation and excitement with the negative (and in this case factually wrong) claim that we're being screwed by Motorola. The latter is what people are referring to when they talk about "whining".

To all who say its not a marketing ploy to get bonus sales on the Droid 2 take a look at this picture someone posted on the Motorola forums:

I'm just pretty heated over the whole thing with the D2 as I feel the Droid X should still be in the limelight and deserved 2.2 at launch, not get overshadowed by a rubbish phone. This one is the marketing machines fault.
