4.3 Update for Sprint Galaxy S3 has Arrived

A factory reset won't unroot a phone and take it back to stock ROM will it? Now that I am on the stock ROM, if I was to do a factory reset, that will fix it?

When they might be the number one network, Verizon has a very poor record in releasing update. That's why there's no Nexus 5 on Verizon.

It looks like the update won't install if you've applied billard412's hack.

Thank You - I tried many different ways to update using the *.zip file with no luck - I was afraid that that was the problem, because it only changed a few lines it made my phone not completely 100% stock - although it is not rooted.

So this is my question if you or anyone can answer:

(1) when Sprint pushes the OTA to me in the normal fashion, it will of course fail if I try to install it, but I will have to try to install it so that it can fail, otherwise I will get a reminder every couple of days to install it - so after it fails will I then get a continual reminder to try and update or will the reminder cease?

(2) I like billard412's hack and my phone runs really well so I am happy to stay at 4.1.2 - so billard412 (if you are browsing this thread) are you, can you reverse your hack out of curiosity?

(3) how else can I update to 4.3 if I want it and keep billard412's hack? I suppose I have to root with one of the XDA variants (with or without KNOX) and start using either CWM or TWRP.

Any insight would be helpful.

Thanks!

My problem is I use hulu plus. Can't use it wit a rooted phone. That's y I went back. Otherwise I would have stayed with the goodness ROM.

  1. You will continue to get reminders until you either a) successfully install the OTA or b) modify your buildprop to eliminate the reminders (requires root).
  2. I'm not familiar with billard412's hack, so I won't venture to guess how to undo it.
  3. So far the OTA is causing all sorts of issues with root. The security features(?) built into 4.3 don't allow the installation of a custom recovery among other things that make root access problematic at this point. CNexus posted a rooted stock 4.3 ROM on XDA without the firmware update, but it is still having some issues with wifi access. There's a temporary fix but it messes up home screen roations

Bottom line is that if you have any desire to have root access you should not accept the OTA for now.

Because I am happy with 4.1.2 and my phone exactly as it is, see my questions below:

1. Is it possible to root and not upset my settings or desktop so I can modify my "build prop" to eliminate the Sprint OTA reminders and then un-root?

2. If rooting, must I always uses a custom recovery? I guess that really wouldn't be so bad as I could make a nandroid for safety emergency restore reasons

I really don't care about count history - I only want to root so I can stop future reminders and then un-root - I don't want to stay rooted because I use Hulu Plus from time to time and it seems root cause a few problems with Google Play Movies and maybe other Google apps like Wallet - so I want to play it safe as I can.

Stupid questions I know - I haven't fooled with rooting in a long time - and now there are so many different ways to root the GS3, it is hard for me to question my abilities to root my daily driver without redoing the complete setup and customization to my perfectly working daily driver for what might be "little gain while causing a little pain". :D

Thanks!

There certainly aren't stupid questions when it comes to learning about this stuff. You need to start somewhere. Please keep in mind that I am only moderately savvy with Android (aka I know how to do things, fix a few broken things, but don't know what's going on behind the scenes)...basically I know enough to get myself in a lot of trouble. :p Luckily, I haven't managed to perma-brick anything I've owned yet. The key is to do your research beforehand and make sure you have everything you need to do whatever it is you're trying to do and confront common hiccups along the way.

Regarding your questions:

1. It is possible to root and not upset your settings as long as you don't flash a custom ROM. In fact, when I first started rooting my devices I would just gain root access in order to be able to backup my apps, bluetooth pairings, WiFi hotspots, etc. Unrooting will likely undo the buildprop fix to eliminate the reminders, but I'm not entirely sure since that falls outside my expertise.

2. In order to gain root access to your phone the file to gain root (at least for the GS3) is flashed through custom recovery. A word of caution...if you have a newer GS3, you need to make sure you have a newer, modified version of custom recovery because of an additional security feature(?) that was added to the kernel (I think it was). The guide to rooting here on Android Central has the updated files for newer devices.

Regarding the Google apps...I haven't had any issues with the ones I use. Of the apps you mentioned, I haven't had issues with Wallet at all (I don't use Videos, Books, etc). I'm not familiar with the Hulu app since I don't use it, but I may download it and see what I can and can't do with it on my phone. Root access on your device in and of itself shouldn't cause functional problems with apps. Again, this starts to delve outside of my expertise, but ever since I started messing around with rooting Android devices over four years ago, I haven't had occasion to question that root broke any particular app. That is purely personal experience though.

I still haven't gotten my update!! :(

Here in california got nothing yet still waiting

They don't push the update to all users at the same time. Generally an OTA will get pushed out to a small percentage of users, then a bit more, then they open the floodgates. Damage control.

If you can't wait, you can download the OTA update file as received from Sprint here ([OTA ZIP] OFFICIAL 4.3 update zip [HAS KNOX BOOTLOADER] - xda-developers). Be warned that this is the update from Sprint and contains Knox. If you have any desire to root your device (even just and inkling) I would highly recommend not installing/flashing this update at least until the devs have figured a workaround to the 4.3 updated not allowing the installation of a custom recovery.

I think the probability that billard's hack will work on 4.3 is pretty much zero. Trying to apply it could brick your phone. Don't go there.

You can revert to completely stock using Odin, as in this procedure: http://forums.androidcentral.com/sp...-30-2012-sprint-only-unroot-return-stock.html

Ignore the part about using triangle away. This will put you on an earlier ROM, and you'll get prompted for several OTAs to get you up to MD4, at which point you can apply the 4.3 update. But understand it's a one way trip: once you apply the official 4.3 update, either via OTA or by sideloading the zip, you can never ever go back to a pre 4.3 ROM. If you try you will brick your phone. And you won't be able to install a custom recovery.

I haven't seen any benefit to 4.3 that makes me want to give Sprint & Samsung that much control over my phone.

Good point. And all very accurate info. Several people tried to roll back from 4.3 using my return to stock zip and sadly all ended up with paper weights so if u want to go to 4.3 I recommend the cnexus thread mentioned b4.

And what "hack" of mine r u referring to?

Has anyone figured out how to edit the lock screen option from showing notifications. I can't believe there's nowhere I can customize that for myself. What's the point of having a pin to lock and access your phone if your messages/missed calls and notifications will be displayed anyway. I thought there would be an option under Security to modify the lockscreen but there isn't. Anyone else experiencing this? I want to go back to the locksreen pre the update.
