5.0.1 for Nexus 6?

For a newbie how hard is it to sideload the next update?

The great thing about being a part of a community like this is that they give step by step directions on how to do it. If you're a visual learner, YouTube has tutorials, too. So to answer your question? Not too hard at all. I'd tell you to search this site for tutorials on how to do it and give it a shot.

I don't know. I'm of the mindset that refusing to sideload/flash when you've got a Nexus is like having a Ferrari, but refusing to push it past 60mph. You shouldn't have to do it all the time, especially when an OTA is being pushed, but on those occasions where El Goog messes up, it's extremely handy. Which is why I was probably running 5.0.1 without encryption before most of you and it took me 10 minutes.

True, the big upside of the Nexus is to tinker, root, sideload, etc, but many people enjoy the Nexus devices primarily because it's true stock Android. For example, people like Kellen of Droid Life or Marques (MKBHD of YouTube fame) used to do all that, but now Android is far along they don't need to anymore (I think they even went on record saying so too).

And to use your Ferrari analogy, some people buy it for the brand, the cachet, or the looks, not just the speed. So it is with the Nexus line.

At first it seems super complicated until you do it and then you can't figure out why you didn't do it to start with.... I'd say the first time will probably take you 30 - 40 minutes.. Maybe more or less depending how quick you catch on and how good you are with tech/computers... After you do it once or twice it's maybe a 10 minute process if that....

I think you're missing my point. You shouldn't have to do it more often than not, but in situations like this where the OTA isn't working for some, it's worthwhile. I only bring this up because there's quite a few people complaining and not just solving the issue with a simple solution that's available to them. As far as Kellen or MKBHD, ask them if they'd flash a factory image of what they would consider an important update if they knew they weren't able to get the OTA for awhile. I'll spoil it for you; they'd answer yes.

And sure, you can buy a Ferrari for those reasons, too, but you'd be missing the larger picture.

I agree. Those who really want it should go out and sideload it as it's simple enough. And of course those main guys know how to do it if they really needed to. I was just responding that not everyone got a Nexus for that reason, or want to do it that way (though they should if they want the update stat vs OTA).

Much as I'd like this simple side load the Android sdk won't run on my imac. So its not so simple. Says Java not there and it is. So unlike the experts here it apparently isn't a simple fix for some. At work now so maybe in the AM will try further.

I too am AT&T but purchased from Moto directly, guess AT&T back to their usual games as far as updates, will probably resurface with their bloatware attached, so much for a clean phone.
I have am AT&T version of the Nexus 6. They have nothing to do with the updates. I received my update Wednesday. My friend who purchased his from Google Play has yet to receive his.

Mine rebooted once and I was able to identify the hardware issue that caused it. I was holding it by the power button.
I noticed the same thing. I had a random reboot, like, once or twice but both times I think I suspected my phone was rubbing up against something in my pocket and it was the power button being pressed. I've never had it reboot holding it normally.

I'll also say that I thought nothing of it. Both of my older phones have done it at some point.

That almost would have been funny if a stock Nexus 6 had a restart option when holding the power button. Since it does not, this fails to make it past open mic night material. ;)
I literally just read your post, held the start button for 10-15 seconds and watched my phone restart.

The option kinda makes sense when you have all software buttons as your phone could start misbehaving to the point where you can't utilize the touchscreen. Did you even try it?

The only thing every single user that experiences the reboots has in common is the N6, Lollipop and Google Apps. The fault lies with one of those three. It's not a third party app.

How do you know that's the "only" thing these people have in common?

Unlock the bootloader, root, install custom 501 rom... DONE. I've been on 501 since the day it was released. No waiting around for a stinkin ota.

I personally believe custom roms are superior to stock. They are made from stock google aosp source with a few mods and are well tested.

Hanging and waiting for Google to issue an upgrade OTA is a drag. I've owned 4 nexii, and not once have I taken an OTA.

I honestly think I am a dying breed around these parts nowadays. I mean I hack my phones up the yin-yang. Shoot most every phone at ac have a root section. 2 months into the N6 and we still don't have one. It seems the art of rooting/hacking is dying around here. Too bad, it's so much fun.

I just try adb side load for the first time..very easy simple process... Now mine run 5.01 as well.

Did you decrypt with root or is there an option in 5.0.1

So you complain about not being able to update when an easy solution that takes 10-15 minutes at best is available to you? Okay. If this happened without an OTA package or factory images available, I'd be right here voicing my displeasure.

What are you on? Look, more people are not tech savvy, than people are tech savvy. Go ask people at your work place, if they know what side loading is. Just because you think it is easy, doesn't make it so. You download the wrong update, and brick your phone, what do you do? Does Google send out emails telling people how to do it?

What about people who don't visit these websites? Where did they learn about side loading? Get real, side loading is for the select few, and is most certainly not the way to get updates. Get real.

In the time you took to type that you could have side loaded! ;)

You clearly don't understand the Nexus line. Enough said.

Lmao. Eh, nobody is perfect. I know I'm far from it.

No problem. You're welcome. If it wasn't for your post I wouldn't have even bothered to check. So we both learned something.
