A question about build quality

Loving everything I have read about Razr HD Maxx, especially the build quality. I went to the VZW store today to check it out. I loved the way it looked and felt. I do have one question though. There is a little "lip" between the metal side band and the screen glass (that prevents damage to the glass if the phone is placed face down on a flat surface) which appears to be plastic (or perhaps painted metal?) and easily subject to damage. With my fingernail I actually put a small ding in it, and I didn't press especially hard. Those of you who have this phone, or those of you who have looked at it, what is your take on this?

I realize I could put a case on it, but to me that somewhat defeats the whole thing. I would hate to cover it up (like I said I love the way it looks) and cases of course always make phones so much bulkier.

I can't dent the rim on my hd and it seems very stable. Wouldn't think the maxx would be any different but haven't seen them together.

My little black plastic frame between the metal and the screen dinged too. Sucks, doesn't bode well.

Also, do you find that the metal bands on the side are recessed compared to the Kevlar back?

I haven't had a problem with the black plastic part yet. Regarding the question about the metal bands - I find that the amount that they are recessed varies slightly in different parts of the phone. I take it as a flaw in the build. I looked at several other MAXX HD's and they all had small flaws to varying degrees, including the metal near the volume rocker jutting out slightly, the seams between the different metal parts not being uniform, and there being a very slight amount of space between the metal and the plastic and/or the kevlar in certain spots. All the flaws are small, but it still bothers me a little. The phone has really nice materials, it's too bad the build isn't perfect.

I do like the overall feeling of solidity of the phone though, as well as the texture of the kevlar and sleekness of the buttonless front.

Thanks to this thread I did discover a slight ding in the plastic rim at the top. May have not noticed it for months had I not been looking. It's at the top near the Moto Logo which is only one of two edges that are not protected by my vzw clamshell case. Oh well, makes me glad the rest of it is Metal and Kevlar:) No worries here.
