I bought my samsung galaxy s4 about a month ago. Its still stock and not rooted. I've heard that the new update for ATT makes it "impossible" to root your phone. I want to be able to root my phone in the future and therefore dont want this update to go through. Its at 27% downloaded so far out of 357.38MB. How do I cancel this update!! Any help would be perfect!

I thought it was Verizon that made rooting impossible not At&t.

UPDATE: I've stopped the updater in processes. I'm wondering if I can root my phone while the update is stopped; use titanium backup and freeze the updater. Anyone?

You'll need to flash stock Recovery to run the ota update.

You should be able to do that. Root, flash custom recovery, freeze the updater and shouldn't have to worry about it.

Updates are usually downloaded to your download folder, then prompt you if you wanna install now or later. If you didn't start install process, you can simply delete it from your phone using file explorer...

You do not need a custom recovery if you don't want it.

Root your phone and then use Titanium Backup to do the following:

"If you want to avoid the update, you should root your phone and freeze the following three apps using titanium backup or some similar app.
1. AT&T Software update Vxx_x_xxxx_x_x
2. FWUpgrade x.x.x
3. LocalFOTA vx_xxxx_x_x"

In the meantime, you can pull out your SIM card and turn off your wifi to prevent it from continuing to download.

All you needed to do was shut the phone off lol. It was only downloading so nothing bad would have happened and as you and the other said, you can freeze att software update and you're good to go.

I am picking up a new GS4 tomorrow, what are the chances their stock on 32GB are still on the older firmware?

Who knows. It really depends on how long it's been sitting at the store. In any event, if you're interested in rooting and all that stuff all you need in Odin and the old firmware file which is all available on XDA. Flash the old firmware with odin and then root as normal. Thread below. I'm not it won't be longer before the new one is rooted as well if it hasn't be done already.

You cannot downgrade from MF3, even with ODIN.

MF3 has been rooted, but there is no custom recovery possible yet.

Right...for Verizon and AT&T users, this is not an option.

Didn't know the MF3 prevented downgrade. Well in any event, root and custom recovery will be out LOL.

Got my GS4 today, and it arrived with ME7 as the firmware. I suspect Verizon had Samsung ship it with the patched OS for the 32GB. When I originally was sold the 16GB in error (Sales Rep error) it had the MDK software so you can likely get what you want but only if you want next to no storage :(

Well F**K. I picked up a new S4 and it had the old firmware. Did not have a chance to root and when I checked the phone installed the update. Not sure what is the deal is I have not seen a phone auto update like this before.
