These are provided for those who decided to follow advice and root the phone to install the ROM version of the leak. They work on either the stock version or the memory enhanced version.

These will not work if you used the RUU.

The following files are update.zip style and need to be flashed from recovery:

This is a version of wireless tether for root users that will work with the leak. It IS NOT a flashable zip file. Unzip, place on your SD card and install using your favorite file browser. This was done to make it easy to update vs. embedding it into the system.
4shared.com - online file sharing and storage - download wireless_tether_1_60_htc.zip
Mirror (thanks smccloud!) http://smccloud.com/Hero/wireless_tether_1_60_htc.zip

Thanks go out to everyone. Special thanks to rufflez

Quick tip if you use market enabler:
when you reboot, you may loose your HTC widgets and not be able to find them... they are on the device, but need to be reinstalled. Use a file manager to navigate to phone/system/app/
install the HTC widgets...
example:
htcclockwidget.apk
htcsettingwidget.apk
and whatever ones you use and they can then be added back to the home screens.

I am getting "no signature" error when I try to flash the combined market/superuser zip and the 3D Gallery. I have installed option #3 of the ROMS.

Thanks

That would be because I uploaded the wrong folder. It's been one of those days. Try again, and sorry :P

I installed wifi-tether throught the link provided, it hangs with

SU Request

I installed the superuser update as well.

Do you know what is wrong?

Make sure USB debugging is on.

Menu>>settings>>applications>>development>>USB debugging

are your widgets not visible anymore?
If they are, then you don't need to do this. when I got into linda file manager-->my phone-->system-->app, i can select htcclockwidget.apk and it gave an option to install

Thank you much!! I tried that with astro but it wasnt working. Guess ill be sticking with Linda. :)

Okay, two quick questions:

1. Is this what I am suppose to do to install the files in the first post?
a. Download file, rename to update.zip, and transfer to root of SD card.
b. Reboot phone into recovery (power+home at startup)
c. Select 'Apply sdcard:update.zip

2. Any time I try to start the tether using the file above I receive the error "Unable to start tether, Please try again!". What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

make sure you have superuser permissions installed
make sure USB debugging is checked
try toggling Airplane mode on and off

Oh and no, you just unzip the file and install the apk through a file manager

Missing something for the wireless tether. Is there supposed to be an ATK file in the folder to install? How do you install with a file browser? Also, what is the purpose of the market enabler? Is it only beneficial for those outside the US market?

Inside the zip file is an .apk file. Copy that .apk to your sd card.

Download a file browser from the market. I use and recommend Astro, but there's a lot of choices and all are good.

Find it, and click to install it.

The market fix allows all paid and protected apps to show up in the market. It fixes the signature of the OS by changing it to the one from the N1 - one that Google knows and understands vs. some crazy Sprint testing signature.

thnx for all your help gbhil... feeling really stupid at this point, just don't see a .apk file inside the folder. The immediate files or program inside the program are: classes.dex and resources.arsc also two folders: res and meta-inf - neither of which have a .apk file in them...

For all the ones above other than the wireless tether one, you don't even have to rename it. Just don't unzip it. Drag and drop into the root and flash it exactly like you flashed the ROM. As always, do nandbackup prior to, just in case. So:
copy zip to sd card
turn off phone
boot into recovery
backup
flash zip... select the zip (heres where not renaming it to update comes in handy)
reboot phone
All set, enjoy root access apps, protected market apps, gallery app from N1 (and now on moto droid).

Hi all,
I'm brand new to this rooting process but was able to root my HTC hero and get it up to Android 2.1 using version 2 http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc-hero-roms-hacks/9522-sprint-2-1-leak.html. Everything came up fine but I do seem to have a couple of issues:

1. My battery only lasts for about 6 hours where as before it was lasting for 12 or more, is there anyway to monitor whats eating up so much juice and shut things off?
2. I put the wireless tether on and installed it. I'm able to connect to my phone from my laptop but I don't have any internet access through the phone. Is there a way to fix it so the internet will work?

Thanks!!

Check the Awake time. Unfortunately, mine isn't sleeping when its plugged in, which makes this almost the same as uptime (over the course of 18 hours, it was awake 15. I deleted some files off of mine to see if they are the culprits. If they are, I MAY post a flashable zip or just post directions on how to remove these files. One you can remove (which was the problem on the original 2.1 ROM's) is GSD.apk from /system/app/ It doesn't change my awake time when plugged in, so I'm looking at other files which could be the culprit for that.
