After OS update, password has been changed to PIN

I updated my Note 5 last night, and when I woke up, I could not use fingerprint verification. Fair enough since it said "Enter PIN instead of using fingerprint recognition after restarting device to protect fingerprints". However, I never set a PIN, only a password, which I cannot access because I cannot use letters. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance for any replies.
