All those old zips and apks on my sdcard--can I delete them?

In the course of owning this phone over six months, I've done a fair amount of hacking and tweaking, thanks almost entirely to the devs and other helpful members here. But after a version upgrade and trying out a couple of custom ROMs, I've accumulated quite a few installation files. Do I need to keep them? For example, if I have a custom recovery, I assume I need to keep the .img file, but can I get rid of the .rar? With .apk files generally, can I just throw those away after installing from them?

Once applied ALL those files can be deleted. The only thing you want to keep a record of are nandroids but even those don't need to be saved on the SD card.

Thanks for the tip.

Regarding nandroid backups, I generally keep only the latest one on my device and move the rest to my notebook's hard drive.

For that matter, often when I am switching basebands, I will back up my sd card to my computer, do a full format from my pc, and then return just the files I want back on there like pictures and needed zips
