Always On, Useful ?

Kind of wonder why they did that. Who needs their phone face constantly lit up when they're asleep? I would have thought it would have been a no brainer to give a choice of when the constant display is "always on". If always on uses 20% a day, you could set it for 12hrs on and only use half the battery. 12hrs would be heaps for me and I could live with 10% a day use.

I just don't see a use for it myself for now. If there are more functions added to this feature later then it might be worthwhile.

I see this as an unnecessary gimmick. Who needs their screen constantly lit up just to tell the time and calendar? I mean, how many times will you be otherwise pressing the home button during the average day to check the time if you don't wear a watch? As far as notifications, my Galaxy S5 tells me I have them with a flashing led light and vibration when I pick it up. The led light also changes color so I know a facebook notification, game notification or missed call/sms just by the color of the flashing led.

That's right. Many people don't know that you can change the notification light to show a differant color depending upon the app. You just need an app from the play store to set those up. I used to use one on a Nexus phone that I had but it's been so long ago that I don't remember it's name.

Well, that's the flip side to "average person turns on their phone 100 times a day" stat. We spend a good chunk of time NOT looking at the display. We're sleeping, it's in our pocket, on the seat of our car, etc. Now, it'd be different if Samsung used an ultra-low power display, like e-ink or something where it sips power when active.

It's a smart idea, I mean, it's one of the most popular features in the Moto lineup... I really like Ambient Display on my Nexus... The feature itself is really useful. But Samsung's implementation (its ALWAYS on and only for a select list of Samsung apps) just really misses the mark.

Perhaps there are some patent issues in here somewhere. Not sure.

Oh boy, here we go. Remember 2 years ago when the s5 was new. Some advocated disabling all the fun stuff that made a smartphone smart. Why not just buy a dumb phone in the first place?

Having AOD doesn't make your phone 'smart'.
Wasting batterylife for just checking the time and missed calls isn't very smart either. People of different idea of 'smart', clearly mine doesn't match yours.
If using AOD makes your phone smart, were you using dumb phones till this time?

So will this phone have that too flashing colored LED like that. I know if your phone is sitting down you can pick colors for different people but I want to be able to pull my phone out of my pocket at work and see a colored LED flashing in the corner to know what it is. But to me pushing the home button every so often is fine with me. I probably wont use it neither. I'm gonna miss my double tap to turn on screen though which I have on my HTC. Plus I got the see through cover case.

I wasn't referring to just that one feature. I was replying to Black Zeppelin and all the features he disables to save on battery life. If you like the AOD/find it a useful feature and it doesn't negatively affect your battery life (where you have to recharge more often than you normally would), it's a smart feature. I personally don't think I'll use it, but if I try it and decide that it improves my quality of life (g) it's smart feature :) If I wanted to dumb down a phone so much that all it did was make phone calls, I'd buy a dumb phone.

I will probably use this feature in the evening, when my phone is lying on the dresser. I can't tell you how many times I hit my home button to check the time, or unlock it to check a date on the Calender. I'll also use it while it charges over night. I feel like this "gimmick" was implemented just for me.

Johnny, looking at your profile pic, you look like a bad *** mofo. Hence I wouldn't argue with you. :-[ If you say always on is great, it is great.

I'm a bit like that. My wife has everything running on her phone all the time-wifi, location, bluetooth etc. I have a Galaxy S5 with an extended MPJ battery and have everything off. I even use pixel saver when browsing. Go figure.

Now her crappy iphone 5 is dying. And guess which phone she wants now? That's right. She wants mine and encourages me to splurge on the new S7

If you were on these forums for the S5 support, I'm sure you remember the LIGHT HEARTED banter about stripping smart phones of their smarts all in the name of who could gain the most battery life :) I was getting close to a day and a half with only removing programs I didn't use. Everything was on. It wasn't till my husband and I started using Life 360 that the battery life decreased but I still don't need to charge till bedtime or later.

Cool.

Haha...I don't necessarily think it's great per say. I can see how people were hoping for more. I just know I would use it, despite it's limitations. :)

My S5 just signaled that my battery was getting low. I have 14% left. Looking at System/Battery, the phone has been on (from fully charged) 20 hrs and 16 minutes. Syncing is on, location services are on, BT, Smart Stay... Says I have 3 hours left but I doubt that's if I'm surfing the Internet and watching videos. So if my S7's battery lasts even longer, that's awesome.

Let's just keep it simple - it's a feature that you could decide to use or simply turn OFF. What's useful for some may not be so useful to rest. Just be aware to check whether it affects the Android Doze functionality. Make the decision yourself whether you find it useful or not. I just like to keep things simple and avoid anything that effects standby (that's my view). You may think otherwise, and that's absolutely fine.

If I got an S7 I would definitely use the feature... One of the reasons I bought and tested a Moto x device.

There are big differences between the way the Moto and Samsung work. Primarily Samsung won't show 3rd party apps and unlike the Moto, you will not be able to touch the notification on the screen to go directly to the app. It's for those reasons i will not be using the always on feature.

I tried always on for few days. Was a neat idea, wish I could schedule it like night times or when plugged in. I have a moto360 so really it's not that useful for me... just cool little gimmick I can show off to people. Now on my 2nd week with the phone and I've disabled it... cool feature tho...

I like seeing the time but if you don't use the stock email and sms apps you won't get any notifications for those.
