my personal opinion is that everyone will get gingerbread... then anything after that will go to new phones

I posted a thread about this when the phone was just released and this is what was learned. The phone has 512 MB RAM but 128 is currently dedicated to the OS per the devs over at xda so the phone will be able to run gingerbread if that is a requirement indeed that os is out.

Try using Setgps from the appstore. It is free and many people seem to have a faster time acquiring the gps satellites using it. I personally haven't had any issues with gps.
Yes if the rumored stats are true then we are fine. I'll put it to you like it was said to me, if any phone out now can handle gingerbread it will be the galaxy s series.
okay i don't know what happen, but with all but the slightest bit of hope lost i tried my gps out one more time and was able to get a lock in about 30 seconds with 700m, it then told me to turn on my wifi for more accuracy and I locked after like 10 seconds to 60 meters of accuracy. still not that great but at least im not getting "your location is not available"
Edit* however that was with standalone gps, vzw location services, and google location services enable. I'd like to get a lock with standalone gps being the only option enabled because that is what i can toggle from the homescreen
Edit* Well i decided to give the gps a test run now that it started to work. I ran a couple blocks from where my apartment is and it locked me in about 3 seconds at 449 7th street and i was standing outside 450. Very accurate. Next i decided to stand outside my own apartment. I live at 733 Jefferson, it nabbed me at 726. Again very accurate being that 727 Jefferson's front door is about a foot and a half from mine. 726 being across the street. This took about five seconds. I disabled the gps for both tests and then enabled it when i wanted it to find my location. What i did to get it to initially lock was enable all 3 gps services available. It took about 5 minutes to lock my location while hanging off of my balcony. From that point on just enabling standalone gps locked in about 5 seconds or less. I don't know why you must enable all three initially when you go for your first ever lock, but once you do standalone works like a charm. So glad i don't have to pay vzw a visit now that we are prime candidates for gingerbread and my gps now works

Glad to hear! I myself do not have any issues with gps either... I have a garmon anyways so I dont really care.

It should, im thinking about applying the voodoo lagfix now that i do not need to make a run to verizon. Should improve performance. I know quadrant scores with it jumped up to 1700 or so (mine is 900 atm). and i mainly use the gps for navigating in nyc. Since im away at school and not that familiar with the unpopular areas of the city (you know places other than times square soho and such) I get lost easily so walking directions with navigation are a life saver.
I am only gettin 880 or so quandrant... And would also like to apply the voodoo lagfix.. HOWEVER. i am affraid to root. the phone is way to expensive to potentially brick. Also, this kills warranty correct?

well I used to apply custom operating systems to my blackberry which based on what I read seemed to have a higher bricking possibility than this phone. you can find very detailed and seemingly simple root instructions at the top of this forum under hacks and roms. if you need further explanation you can check out xda developers forum. many people refer to it already. as far as voodoo lag fix it seems a little more complicated but im confident in my tevh abilities since I managed to unbrick a berry. if all else fails I have the full coverage insurance with verizon so for 80 they send me a new one
rooting opens up the possibility for apps that allow free wi fi tethering as well as the ability to load custom roms that can remove touchwiz and all the verizon bloatware. from my understanding voodoo fixes the file systems of the phone so everything moves faster
it's not for the casual user for sure, but if you are decent with tech, read everything thoroughly and are okay with spending an afternoon with your phone, it's actually quite hard to brick your phone to the point of needing a new one.
sure you might mess up the file system, kernel, and mbr, but they are all fixable.
quadrant scores aren't everything, yes, voodoo will make the phone run a little smoother, but if you are uncomfortable with the process, take your time, you won't see a night and day difference with the fix.
our quadrant scores are bad because of samsung's insanse decision regarding the file system, but it doesn't impact the phone's performance that much in a day to day sense.

any idea if the voodoo fix fixes the hang up you get when you go to add a widget to the home screen. idk if its just my phone but it hangs for a solid ten seconds before widgets pop up. I know I'm being nitpicky just curious
that's odd, personally i have not experienced that either before or after voodoo...
Personally, I don't see the point in bringing back a phone you otherwise like due to rumors that it might not get an update to 3.0, based on rumors that there are hardware requirements for it at all. Also, I disagree with those that say rooting and flashing are complicated/time consuming. The first time I rooted and flashed my Captivate, it took 2 hours to go from stock, to rooted, backed up, and running a custom, Froyo filled ROM.
