Android 5.0.2 OTA

I received the update 2 days ago (went straight from 4.4.4 to 5.0.2) and everything works fine...really smooth and no issues. I went ahead and did a hard reset afterwards just to start fresh.

Still NO OTA for my LTE version. I'm still stuck on 4.4.4. Why do us LTE users get the shaft : (

Any 3G and LTE variants will get their own OTA, they never get updated with the WiFi versions. The most likely reason, carriers. They always have to do their own testing on any updates.

Yeah well I bought it straight through the Google Play store. No carriers should be involved when I bring my own device right? I'm on AT&T gophone plan.

Yeah well you said it yourself...you're on AT&T. It doesn't matter where you bought it...a carrier still has to provide your service regardless.

My point was it was not bought from a carrier store. Therefore it should be treated like a Google Play Edition phone. Just like you can put a Google play edition phone on t mobile or AT&T same goes for this tablet that I have. So I would assume it would have a immediate update. There is no reason wifi versions should get first dibs only. If it was the nexus 7 bought through Verizon then I could see why it would have a delay but not one bought straight from Google!

I don't think it's so much about the carriers as it is the extra hardware/drivers and resulting complications. It's easier to work the bugs out first on simpler hardware, then move on to more complex. Now that it seems that 5.0.2 is a stable, non-pulled release, I would be hopeful that they're now making sure it works on the more complex LTE versions of the tablet, and may have an update soon. However, they may have to wait on the carriers to do testing. You're right - the device isn't a carrier-specific device. Unfortunately, that likely means they need to make sure it's going to work properly on ALL the carriers before they release the update, because buyers could be using the tablets on any of the carriers, so the update needs to work across the board.

Either way, the same device, bought on Google Play or through a carrier, is still the same device. It has different drivers than the WiFi versions, and carriers don't let updates proceed without testing to ensure it won't disrupt their network in any way. You can argue that's how it should be until you're blue in the face, but this is how it is and it was the same way when previous updates happened. The previous updates might've come quicker, but that's been the case for most all devices upgrading to Lollipop. Of the 2 Nexus 7s in our household, one didn't get updated until 5.0.1, and the other until 5.0.2. It's fair to say this has been their least trouble free update to date. If you'd told anyone that all Nexus WiFi devices wouldn't get updated until the middle of January when it was announced last year, they would've called you crazy.

All I know is I'm starting to feel like Verizon Galaxy Nexus users felt a few years ago. It angers me when it feels like Motorola and HTC get updates to their phones faster than Google does to their own products sold straight through their website.

Verizon is kind of a special situation though. Of any carriers, none have been more anti-Nexus than them. They like to control and find a profit from any and everything they possibly can. Look at how they fought Google Wallet because they had their own service they wanted to push. I still remember them doing everything they could to block people from downloading custom ringtones from outside sources when dumbphones were king, because they couldn't profit off of it. T-Mobile, AT&T, and even Sprint are miles more open than Verizon has ever been. But whether you buy it from Google Play or from the carrier, it's still the same device. The updates won't get handled any differently depending on where you purchase it.

But my point was, they've been having plenty of difficulties even getting a solid update out to the Nexus 7 WiFi variants. Those will always come first because there is absolutely no outside sources to deal with. Considering that they only just recently had an update they didn't need to pull a few days in, it's a bit unreasonable to expect an update right after that. Because no matter how open a carrier is, they will still certify the update to work on their network. None of us like it, but that's the way it goes.

Now if you're at the middle to end of February and still don't see an update, I'd start to get a bit miffed. But for all we know, the carriers may already have the update and are dragging their feet. That's the risk you run when a third party is in the mix.

One of my Nexus 7 2013 tablets still hasn't gotten the update yet. In fact, I'm still on the latest 4.4. What's the story? Shouldn't the update have come to me by now? Is it still being rolled out?

I have a 16gb 2013 that is still on 4.4 too. Would have updated but couldn't find any 16gb ota. I wonder if there are any stats on how many haven't yet received it. People give hell to carriers and the different manufacturers, but this whole rollout gives me pause when thinking Nexus will be updated first.

While everyone here seems thrilled with the 5.0.2 update, a whole lotta other people are screaming bloody murder!

My wife and I have both had the update FORCE downloaded to our Nexus 7s. I would like to stay with KitKat for now and MAYBE do an update when 5.1 arrives.

How can I REMOVE 5.0.2 from the tabs just to be safe?

Thx.

I just got notice for 5.0.2 system update, and I'm running 4.4.4

Is there a way to permanently dismiss the update, and wait for a future version?

You can disabled the notification for the update by long pressing it then selecting app info and then when it takes you to the play services app info screen uncheck the enable notifications box to disable notifications.
I just did it as I was sick of the constant notification and I dont want to install lollipop just yet.

Thank you! That takes me to "Google Play Services". Will disabling notifications also stop all other apps from updating (besides 5.0.2 system update)?

BTW, the 5.0.2 system update in-waiting looks like a hefty 52 MB. Will it ever delete itself, or do I have to zap it?

I was under the impression that it has not yet downloaded? If you go to software update in about device it says click to download. If yours has downloaded already i would (if that bis possible) I would say delete it. The update will always be in the software update section of the settings should buoy choose to have a change of heart.
Regarding stopping apps from downloading; I doubt it. What it will stop is any notification alerting you to a possible update etc.
