Android Auto first impressions thread (and ask us anything!)

Thanks everyone!

Odd that the phones won't just be forced to push audio over USB - seems like it would be the better choice. I remember Phil saying on a podcast that it pushes call audio over BT and playback audio over USB so that it can manage the sound correctly.

As for when to get the HU, I would love to get it in the next couple of months but now I'm a bit unsure. Considering Pioneer is the only company with a HU actually available, I can't see second-gen Android Auto HUs coming out until closer to that 12-month point. Currently looking at the NEX-4100, and liked it in-store at BestBuy.

Decisions, decisions....
I believe the Kenwood models are imminent. http://m.androidcentral.com/kenwood-now-shipping-its-new-aftermarket-android-auto-receivers

Ah cool, might have to check those out as well - though they seem a bit steeper in price than the Pioneer units. Anyone have an opinion on the resistive displays? I tried the NEX-4100 at Best Buy and thought it was alright. My mom bought a CR-V recently which came with a capacitive display and it was a fingerprint magnet and had some noticeable glare. I imagine the resistive displays wouldn't have these issues (as much as a capacitive display)?

I put a screen protector on mine. No more finger prints. Works great. Really don't scroll or zoom as much as you think you would. It's hard to do when driving.

Which model do you happen to have?

I use the Lexerd screen protector for the 7000NEX, 8000NEX with my 8100NEX. It actually wards off the finger prints and with careful application doesn't distract that much from the screen clarity (if at all). It's kind of adequate but not great with glare reduction.

Anyone having problems with the head unit freezing after about 15-20 minutes of use? Mine started this lately. Have a Nexus 6 with Pioneer AVH-4100NEX.

Yes mine has been freezing so often i stopped using it. It was doing this a month ago and then it went away. Last week started happening again. I think its a google play issue or security update thing. Hoping it will go away on its own again lol.

Just tried clearing data and cache on the phone aa. Now it won't even start up anymore but it was freezing almost instantly after startup the past few weeks. I wonder if the iPhone has these issues

Despite some of the issues people are posting here, I decided to go with the 4100NEX for my 2013 Civic EX. Found one on Amazon for pretty cheap from a third-party seller who honors the warranty for a year.

I was debating with the 8100 but didn't really think the GPS or capacitive display was really worth an extra $400-$500 on Amazon. I've used the 4100 at Best Buy and found it was responsive enough for my taste. Plus, my Civic has steering wheel controls that will work the Pioneer anyway, so I shouldn't have any issues.

Might try to do a lot of pictures and an install video since I couldn't barely find anything on YouTube for newer-gen civics.

Dropping my 2010 Honda Fit at Best Buy this afternoon for a 4001NEX install, fingers crossed. Fav albums added to Playlist on Google Music, Pocket Casts loaded up, firmware update on SD card, now it's all just waiting.

They didn't get finished until later in the evening so I didn't get to play too much. I did the firmware update, phone set up with Nexus 6 was a breeze and I ran through basic function. I had to do some cable routing this morning so I can still use my Pro Clip phone mount. I'll take it out for a drive later but off the cuff I'm pretty happy, working as expected. Thanks. Pics later, or specifically after I hit 10 post.

Cool, would definitely like to see it in a Fit. Good to hear everything is working!

I'll snap some pics later, took it for a spin this morning and pretty pleased. My ProClip sits right above the unit so the USB cable dips a little over the upper right hand corner, but I'll find a better solution for that, but for now the cable placement serves it's purpose. Real test will be tomorrow's commute but I ran it through all the basics including phone calls and messaging and I'm pretty impressed. Just added a few more albums to playlist and changed the retention policy on PocketCast so should be smooth sailing.

So do I have to clear the 'warning' screen every time I start the car? I get it Pioneer, don't stare at the screen and drive. Didn't see anything in settings.

Yes I think you do. Nothing in settings to turn it off.
