Android Auto

Have you tried plugging your phone on to a cigarette style charger and charging your phone some.
To see if it will help charge the phone
Know it ain't gonna work on AA.

Hate to hear your having the problem.

PS:. With the November update and the Google cable, my 3XL is still "Charging slowly"...

I keep chiming in on this because I keep testing.
I just went to visit my daughter at college in Delaware this past weekend and when I left my house on Saturday, I was at 75% battery. It was a 3 1/2 hour ride and I used navigation and google play music the whole trip. My battery topped off within the first hour (didn't notice exactly how long but under an hour) and when I arrived at UD, I was at 100% and my phone was only slightly warm to the touch. It's exactly what I need from AA. I also received and sent several texts during my trip.
Now, of course, it doesn't charge as fast as my rapid charge block and cable from google. But that's not what I need or expect from Android Auto.
Also, as I've said previously, this was with a non google 6 inch cable.
On the way home I used my 6 inch google cable with the exact same results.

Is that a 3 or a 3XL?

When connected to Android Auto, does the screen indicate "Charging slowly", "Charging rapidly", or simply "Charging"?

Yes, and that works fine.

The issue is, AA was able to charge my 2XL "rapidly" typically picking up 25% or so during my 30 minute commute. But the 3XL gains only around 3 or 4% during the same time, whether using the cable I always used with my 2XL or the Google cable that I purchased recently to test.

It's a 3xl.
I'll have to take a closer look at what it says. I'm using a 6 inch cable and I'm old, so it's hard to see small font.
And to be perfectly honest, what difference does it make. It's gaining charge while utilizing the most battery intensive stuff I can throw at it. And it's gaining at a respectable rate too.
But I will check later when I get a chance.

You're not the only one, I'm also having this issue which may or may not be related to the cable. I hear some saying with official cable people get charging rapidly while other don't, starting to think it's the combo of the car output and device/cable conflicting. I have noticed only getting 8% on a 1 hour commute before, more recently turned into 15% so wondering if there's some software leaving going on as well. I'm scratching my head about this.

I don't doubt what you're saying here, but I had a 2xl too and regardless of what the screen said, it never charged as fast as being plugged into the wall with a rapid charger block and cable.
I don't see how a usb port in an automobile would have that type of capability.
I currently am driving a 2018 Honda Accord. I used AA with my 2xl and 3xl in this car with the same cable and if they didn't charge at exactly the same rate, it's pretty close. Probably 1% every 2 minutes approximately, maybe slightly better.
My rapid charger at home at best does 1% per minute and you're saying you almost got that in your car with the 2xl. Again, I didn't think any usb port could do that.
Now if you're only getting 3 - 4 % in 30 minutes, that's pretty bad and I'm not sure what to say about that.

See my previous post in this thread, https://forums.androidcentral.com/#mn_p_lc, specifically the last few paragraphs.

For clarification: there are 3 different charging states for the P2 & P3 phones: "slowly charging", "charging", and "charging rapidly".

USB PD is capable of "charging rapidly". USB A to USB C is capable of "charging"; depending on the USB A connection. An old legacy device USB A that only puts out 500ma will show "charging slowly"; a modern USB A connection (such as a head unit) will put out 1.5 amps and will show as "charging".

The core issue is this: in the exact same environment (cables, vehicles, head units) when connected to an AA capable infotainment system, the P3 shows "charging slowly" whereas the P2 shows "charging".

In my experience, the P3 does not even come close to charging as fast as the P2 in the exact same environment. In fact, it would charge 1/3 as slow as the P2.

Exactly!

And, not only does it show "Charging slowly" - but that is what it actually does. The difference in charge rate between the 2XL and the 3XL is, in my experience, a factor of at least 8.

I'm not experiencing the same as you guys. I don't keep such a close eye on it so it's possible my 2xl charged faster than my 3xl but it's negligible at best.
I'm about to get in my car in about 5 minutes and will be traveling about 25 minutes.
My phone is at 70% and I'll be plugged into my cars AA with my non google 6 inch cable.
I'll come back in an hour and let you know where my battery went to and I will be using nav.

25 minute drive.
Started at 69%
Finished at 85%
With nav going and a 7 minute call
Again, totally satisfied with this

My environment has not changed and my 3XL says charging

Has anybody having charging problems tried factory reset on their phones and downloaded be everything from cloud !

I have a Pixel 3 XL and hear about the batteries only charging in the slow mode.

My phone when plugged in my Sonata says Charging slowly.

I have a 6' verizon branded charging cord.

With me having a 3500 AH battery. I have enough battery that I don't have to worry about it.
