Another handset, another problem?

I upgraded to the HTC One almost 4 weeks ago and generally I am very happy with the phone, however I have already had to have the original handset replaced once as the proximity sensor was not working and the wi-fi kept dropping out everytime the phone was woken.

I've got the new handset home this evening and I find that the screen has horizontal lines running across it. These are about 3mm apart and are obvious when the screen is off or viewed on a dark screen at a slight angle - bright colours viewed straight on don't show them. The lines are also present when the phone is switched off.

I'll be contacting my supplier again tomorrow about this as my previous handset did not have these lines - I don't see why after paying the best art of ?500 why I should put up with a fault, but I am starting to wonder what is going on with HTC's quality control and checking at the moment. It's starting to question my confidence in the phone as well.

Has anyone else suffered similar issues?

Well, it seems that I have discovered a batch of faulty handsets at my local supplier with all of their recent delivery suffering from the same problem to a greater or lesser extent. Unfortunately this means that I am now the unhappy ex-owner of an HTC One :( My confidence in HTC's build & Quality Control has really been knocked which is a shame as I really want to love this phone - it is awesome. Just not sure what to go for as an alternative now - SGS4 does not appeal and the Xperia Z is just a touch too big for my taste.

Could you order online? To bypass the local supplier? Or travel to a different city? I'm sorry about your luck and you shouldn't have to resort to these things but perhaps talking honestly to the company you bought the phone from to see if they'll make it right should go a long way.

This ^. I would just have your local supplier open every box till they get to a phone that doesn't have those lines. If your cool with them, they should be cool with you.

Also, it's HTC's fault to a certain extent but the blame goes to the manufacturer for releasing them. Every phone manufacturer whether it's Samsung, HTC, Nokia, and etc., releases a bad batch of phones every now and then. Heck, just go to the S4 forums...they gots lots of complaints about quality such as bad battery life, overheating, and the list goes on. I'm just trying to help calm your nerves a bit!

Yeah anything mass produced will have some defects know and then. Get a new one mines petfect

Mine has like horizontal blueish lines running across the screen, can only be seen at certain angles though if it has direct sunlight on it. I thought this was normal and just part of the screen design???

My first faulty handset did not have them at all, and a couple of the silver "demo" handsets that the dealer had did not have them either. The shop have recently had a delivery and all of the boxes that we opened had the same issue with the screens - some worse than others. While I agree that the majority of time they would not be noticeable, the fact that they are sometimes is not good enough (in my opinion) on a handset that I have just spent ?500 on. The quality of the screen is also one of the man selling points of the handset as well.

I'm stuck in two minds as to what to do at the moment. Keeping my Sensation is not an option as it seem so slow compared to the One. Which leaves me with the following choices: try a silver "One" instead of the black that I love or revert to my original plan before I got swayed by HTC and get a Nexus 4. My confidence in HTC is starting to wane though - my Sensation has been far from perfect and I worry about the long term prospects for the One at the moment.

Can anyone help allay my fears?

Well mines a silver one anyway and has the same thing so don't think it really matters on the color, suppose it must just be certain batches have it more than others.
TBH I'm not too bothered by it as said hardly noticeable unless looking for it. When screen is on it cannot be seen at all only when screen is off so has not affect on the usability. I've read stories of people having gaps on the phone casing, dead pixels, dust under screen and camera lenses etc so counting myself lucky really.
As you mentioned it is a ?500 phone though so should be top quality really but there will always be little niggles here and there.

So you are seeing the digitizer? When light reflects off the screen? In very specific circumstances? I've been able to see it on every touch screen I've owned but never under normal use. You shouldn't be seeing it either while using. If that's the case there is no problem. That's just a touch screen.

I have to disagree. This is the first time I have seen these lines on any touch screen phone that I have. The first (faulty but replaced) handset did not have them, neither does either my Sensation (or the wife's). I am sure that they are there, but they should not be visible on a device.

The lines were actually quite obvious - especially when viewed from anything other than directly straight on. Some handsets on the store's delivery where more obvious than others which is another reason to believe that it is a manufacturing fault on that particular batch. As I said earlier, their silver version was also without the lines.

I keep coming back to the One as being the handset that I want - despite its faults so far. I know that I am struggling getting hold of another black one in my own city at the moment due to the faulty batch - do I get a silver version instead?

So you did see them during normal use? Ok, that might be a problem. The silver is also a good looking phone. Give it a shot. You might like the phone so much without the problems you've had that you could possibly ignore the color change.

I prefer the silver One versus the black for the simple fact that the finish will probably hold up better over time.

If you like the One I would just keep exchanging it until you get a good one. I understand about being turned off, though. I've exchanged devices multiple times before just to make sure I had a properly functioning unit (not the One).

I knew someone who went through something like six pres. But then again that was the pre. :p I'm glad I've only had one phone come out of the box not up to my standards.

Okay, I think that I've just about been convinced to give the One a further go - there really isn't another handset out there that ticks all the boxes quite like this one does. I'll try a different store to see what their stock is like - and if necessary go through every box that they have until I find one without any obvious fault.

I'm going to try and stick with the black if I can though - I know that the colour is purely down to personal choice and it has the edge over the silver for me - I was initially worried about scratches etc, but it lives in a case so that and fingerprints shouldn't realy be an issue.

Thanks for the suggestions folks - it really is appreciated - I just know that the alternative of a Nexus 4 would be a compromise (even if it is running stock Android), and the Xperia Z was just not doing it for me.

Unfortunately I've had to admit defeat with my handset :(

After taking several handsets out of boxes in three different stores, they all have the same lines on them - some more obvious than others strangely. I know that I am probably being overly picky but as I know that they should not have them I also know that settling for a handset with these on the screen would really start to bother me over time. I am quite deflated as I had done a lot of research prior to settling on the One, and I still don't think that there is another handset out there to touch it for the overall package that it provides but my confidence in the handset (and if I'm honest, HTC) has been knocked somewhat.

For all of you (and I'm sure that it the vast majority of users) with fully working, fault free handsets, please enjoy them safe in the knowledge that I am now rather jealous - especially as my Sensation now feels like it was made about 100 years ago.

I'll now go back to my research...:'(

Sounds like you are so ocd about your phone that you are letting little things bother you or you "find" something wrong. Maybe find a different phone that may be more to your liking
