Any faith left for sprint

Sprint still hemorrhaging and T-Mobile doing quite well.

Well the talk has already centered around a combined T-Mobile/Sprint would be run by the current T-Mobile CEO.... T-Mobile is currently gambling big time..

T-Mobile added a net 2.4 million new customers in the first quarter of 2014, the first time the company has exceeded the 2 million customer mark in growth.

But T-Mobile posted a first-quarter loss of $151 million, or 19 cents a share, reversing a year-earlier profit of $106 million, or 20 cents a share, as its promotional efforts weighed on the bottom line.

That is a $257 million dollar swing in the red from last year.... I like the gambling T-Mobile is doing.. They are swinging for the fences... Upgrading their network big time with the billions they got from the failed AT&T merger and now they are willing to gamble by spending millions upon millions (Actually hundreds of millions) to pay ETF's and buy people out of their carrier contracts and get them on T-Mobile... But it seems they understand they have to have a network to KEEP people from just jumping ship 6, 8, 12 months from now..... So far I am very happy with T-Mobile.... But I have my unlocked Nexus and with their nice $30 prepaid play it's a hell of a steal and with the speeds being ten times better than Sprint (at least in Dallas) and so far in the areas I do travel and roam to... It's a heck of a deal..

T-Mobile has come a long way... I tested them out for 3 months back with the Nexus One on a prepaid plan and they were horrible so I was iffy on making this move now but wow they've done a lot to upgrade..

If Sprint buys T-Mobile (or I guess right now it's Softbank trying to buy T-Mobile) and it's run by the people running T-Mobile with Softbank money it could be interesting...... Sprints Spectrum portfolio with T-Mobiles backhaul network and towers???

What I don't understand is why do people think the merger would bring good news to customers.
Sprint has all that spectrum. What do they really even need T-mobile for?
Or is it because Sprint's losing a huge chunk of customers to T-mobile and wants that to stop...

Even if they acquire Tmobile, which I'm doubtful DOJ/FCC would approve, do you seriously think Sprint can really consolidate the two networks? Look at Nextel. Sprint bleed Nextel dry for way too long. Do we really need another CDMA/iDen fiasco of the 2000s?? Now sprint wants to consolidate GSM and CDMA? uh, so if they even acquire tmobile. it still wont fix their network....

Not sure. I moved to Verizon for now with the girlfriend.. If she likes it we will stay. If not.. Who knows? Maybe back to T-Mobile then... Although Sprint owning T-Mobile would worry me... Depending on who runs it.

ATT/Tmobile would have been overkill but SPrint/tmobile isn't overkill considering that Sprint has more bandwidth than verizon/Att combined? Yeah, ok. try telling the FCC/DOJ that....

Yea but its all about the total install base, not only spectrum. Prices and consumers is what its all about and that's what will buy the FCC off and it will go through.

I will tell you why, because many people (including me) are worried that such a merger would derail all the great stuff that T-Mobile has been doing over the last couple of years. There is no doubt that T-Mobile could certainly use the better rural coverage of what Sprint has. But the two networks are very different and it could screw up T-Mobile's operations for years to come. A lot of us WERE on Sprint and left them for T-Mobile for very good reasons.

If both companies were doing poorly, then a merger would make more sense than what we do have now- which is Sprint still hemorrhaging and T-Mobile doing quite well. Now, if they wanted to enter into some killer roaming agreements and start making the networks and handsets more compatible with each other, I think that would be great.

Its not about one company doing great now.....its still #4 and sprint #3. Its about an Att+Verizon duopoly and that has to stop! Bringing prices down by offering a top of the line network with faster speeds and cheaper data! The US is ranked almost the lowest in speeds and yet we have the highest prices. Would you all like to pay less for data and have 2-3 times more faster speeds??!! Its simple ppl.

For someone who hated me talking about T-Mobile you sure seem awfully excited for the merger lol.

Because I want Att to go down from being so greedy (gobbling up company after company) and Verizon to fall off its high horse overpriced plans.

Lol, true story.... ;-) :-)

Surprisingly AT&T and Verizon are identical in price now. Found that out when doing my research on Verizon. My 10 GB plan would be the exact same price on AT&T... So went with Verizon since they have more LTE coverage for now.

As my contract was coming to an end and I started looking at T-Mobile and AT&T (Since the Nexus 5 doesn't play nice with Verizon) for the most part the plans are very similarly priced if your paying outright for your device and going on a prepaid plan or a discounted "I paid cash for my phone" and out of contract...

The difference comes down to the amount of data you need/use.... On paper Sprint is/was an amazing deal... with my corporate discount and out of contract I was paying just $70 a month for unlimited everything... But I only averaged right at 1 gig per month and 80 - 90 minutes of talk with Sprint and for less money a 2 gig plan with AT&T was cheaper....

but now that I am free from Sprint and have very good coverage I've found that I am probably going to need at least 3 - 4 gig every month........ So now I would need to go to 4 - 6 gig per month on AT&T and then with my corporate discount I would actually be about the same as with Sprint or maybe a little bit more... but an extra say $5 - 10 per month for coverage that is ten times better????

And then I read on here people with this $30 T-Mobile prepaid plan.... and for basically "Testing" the T-Mobile waters $30 wasn't much of a risk and now I just can't believe how much better the coverage is and how much faster the network is... Only issue will be if you get stuck out in the sticks somewhere.. 99% of the time I am within the Dallas Fort Worth city limits so it's a heck of a better deal.. but T-Mobiles other plans with unlimited talk and text plus throttled data packages were similar in price to AT&T and Sprint..... Just depends on your needs for data consumption....

I've seen Sprint's plans under Softbank (which they've owned for almost a year now)

A $45 dollar unlimited text, talk, no data

$60 dollar 2.5 gb

(source: Sprint revamps prepaid with cheaper plans, new phones - CNET)

Mhm... While att's prices for their prepaid portion
is $45 for 1 gb
$60 2.5 gb
(source: AT&T adds more data and a hotspot option to prepaid GoPhone plans)

Uh... in one year Softbank just turned into ATT already.... possibly even worse because ATT lets you tether and softbank doesnt

But then again Sprint (under Softbank) also layed off massive employees yet also gave their CEO a huge raise (during Q1 2014, the same quarter they lost half a million subscribers)

(source: http://www.kansascity.com/2014/03/07/4873870/sprint-ceo-dan-hesse-had-a-49.html)

I find it odd that Son would allow Dan Hesse to get such a luxurious raise (hell, Hesse made more than the CEO of verizon and att combined) yet at the same time Son states he's going to change the wireless industry? Sounds like Son's jumping onto the American bandwagon: overpriced services, high pay for CEOs, and laying off a huge number of workers.

Let me know when the people in Japan under Son's network can unlock their off-contract smartphones/iPhones.....

You know nothing about infrastructure, restructuring, economics and much less how much, MUCH better the wireless industry is in Japan compared to the US.

Well, at least you know how to site things....lol 👍

Yet I do know enough that Japan is almost the size of California....

Son has no experience whatsoever in running a network in America.

Yup the size of California yet their internet is 12x faster and 2x cheaper. Also Son is the richest man in the eastern world; yea he doesn't know jack.

Well, I'm done here since there's nothing left to say 😉

So I looked into softbanks plans. Apparently their LTE plan is about $51 U.S. dollars. And it's throttled after 7 gb. What's this big hoopla you keep making about softbank? $51 dollars and a 7 gb throttle isn't that amazing

(Flat-rate data service for iPhone 5s / iPhone 5c / iPhone 5 | Price Plans | iPhone | Mobile | SoftBank)

And the only thing I found on Softbank's LTE speed's were they hit a peak of 141 mbps on LTE-A, which isn't that impressive at all since Verizon's XLTE hit 92 mbps here in Chicago

Wow, I'm happy this thread stayed alive. Just wanted to give an update after my first month of usage after my switch.

First I would like to start with the hand full of guys that get decent data speeds in this thread with sprint. I'm very happy that you get great data speeds but come to my city and try to even use 2gig of your UNLIMITED data, good luck with that task. Sprint does have decent coverage around here just using data is like trying to pull teeth. I just hope you guys understand that not all sprint areas get as good of data speeds as you.

OK so after a month of at&t everything seems to be going great, I've actually doubled my data usage of the highest month ever used with sprint. That is because the data speeds are available to be used, so I actually used what I pay for, which is how it should be.
I'm seem to gain close to 1hr of battery use throughout the day. I attribute that to not constantly have low signals or always switching from LTE to 3g.
Lastly is price wise. The reason I was with sprint was for their lower prices. But at&t is now very competitive. I'm actually paying a few dollars less a month per phone with at&t, and can actually take advantage of what I'm paying for.

So all you guys getting great data with sprint, I'm happy for you. But there's dozens more not getting what they pay for and in my case the grass really is greener on the other side.

Thanks for keeping this thread alive and keep up the good discussion

I have it 118mbps on Verizon without carrier aggregation. Theoretically I should be able to get 150mbps on 20+20mhz aws.

That's very impressive, and I already told you so in another thread.

Yet, when Sprint gets done, these speeds will look like dialup compared lol.

Doubtful. Highly doubtful. They won't look like dial up...

Please don't act like Sprint is the only one doing network upgrades. Everyone has been Hence everyone having better speeds now..

Sprint is the one that's been slacking... Hence the normal Sprint "it's coming.. It will.. In the future" as we always see from them.
