Over the last few years, I've tried several GPS navigations apps (including Google Maps, Waze, etc), and the best I've found so far is a little gem called "Free GPS Navigation", which is indeed completely free.

What I like about it is that you can download free street data for one or several countries, for 100% offline navigation.
But if you use the application while being connected to internet, it will then use real-time traffic data to avoid the traffic jams, which you can see in red on the map.
