i have tried to open a couple different apps today and they appear to open, only to shut down instantly. I have turned the phone off, disabled the individual apps then enabled again and even uninstalled and re-installed one of the apps...still no luck! Any idea what is going on?

I thought I may have been the only one, but seeing your post makes me think its not a coincidence. Exact same thing for me. I have factory reset three different times now trying to figure out whats going on. no effect.

Apps that are causing problems for me are soundhound and rom manager, at least those are the two i have tested since the resets. 2048 the game was doing it too but the reset fixed that one. What about you? what apps are force closing?

EDIT: what carrier are you using as well? Im Verizon.

EDIT 2: Ok I have a theory. This time after factory resetting I can open both apps just fine, but I did not install any of the updates for the preinstalled apps. Maybe an update was pushed that is not playing nice. I'll keep playing.

Think I got it.

Go into the App store and search your apps for "Android System Webview" and uninstall it. My apps were working fine until I installed that update. Then they force closed. I uninstalled it and they resumed working just fine.

Let me know how you make out, Im going to continue to install and update my apps now that I have to fully recover my stuff.

Thanks! I couldn't get Uber or Bank of America to work at all today, but uninstalling Android System Webview definitely did the trick. Thanks!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't know what Android System Webview even is but uninstalling the updates to that saved the day for me!! I see it was updated yesterday and that's when the problems started. The 2 apps that weren't working for me were Words with Friends and MyFitnessPal!! They both are working now!!!!!! WHEW!!!

Thanks for the tip. I had lost MyFitnessPal, Weatherbug, and a couple different Twitter apps. Uninstalling Android System WebView did the trick.

OK I thought it was just me. Driving me crazy and worst of all I couldn't get into Good for work emails. I'll try removing the Webview update and see.

This!!! After reading this I went and uninstalled the update and Textra now works perfect again. I thought it was the app and it was not. Guess I will email the developer again and advise the issue so they can share it. So is Google going to fix this webview crap or what is the actual point of it?

subscribing to this thread so I can find it later. My phone has been doing the same thing but it's shutting down almost every app at some point or another. the phone has already been replaced once under warranty because it wouldn't hold a cellular data signal.

phone app closed today during a conference call

Thank you! This worked for me. My Fitness Pal had suggested disabling the Android Web View, but that didn't work. I had to do a complete uninstall. I had thought this was caused by the HTC Service Pack, but appears to not be the case.

Note, if you install the Web View and still have problems, be sure to reboot!

I have the same issue with my HTC M8. Apps are shutting down instantly. Did a factory reset too. The problem still persists. My carrier is Verizon too. SOS !!!

Yep, me too. Even speed test was crashing. Something to do with ad supported apps.

Is there a channel to actually report this to Google? The "send email" link on the Play Store for WebView apparently goes to a "no reply address" according to the auto reply I immediately received, and I can't find a Google Product Forum for this component.

I am very hesitant to uninstall updates back to the factory version and be exposed to whatever can be delivered through ad networks, but this issue is seemingly randomly making several apps completely unusable (Hangouts at times, several games).

THANK YOU!!! My M8 and my wife's S5 had the same problems. Verizon network. Uninstalling Android System Webview did the trick.

Same situation here. I would have thought I'd have received some type of notice, or another update correcting the problem. Looks like the developers released without testing. I disabled my WebView after I backed out the updates. Not sure of the impact of that decision. I'm sure there are thousands of users who haven't read this post yet and who are having a very frustrating day.
