Are Nexus Otterbox cases for the Verizon or the GSM version?

The Verizon Nexus is thicker, so the GSM version would fit loosely instead of securely in cases designed for the Verizon version.

Any other case recommendations?

I would say it's more for the Verizon branded GNex. I have it and there is actually a little wiggle room. Though this may be on purpose I would imagine that since the GSM version is slightly thinner it have even more room to move around with in the case.

I tried one at a RadioShack, and the VZW case is not usable.

I have it on my GSM Galaxy Nexus and although there IS a little wiggle room, I'm not worried about it at all, this case is otherwise great, and gives me greater confidence in taking the device everywhere I go without worrying about it breaking or anything.

The screen protector is too far away from the screen. I cannot pull down the status bar without struggling.

No kidding. I have less of a problem with that on the SGN /OtterBox Defender combo than I did with my Droid Incredible2/OtterBox Defender combo.
Aside from the added bulk to an all ready large device I rather like the Defender on the Nexus. The rubber outer shell actually fits on to the inner hard plastic shell in a much more secure way than on the other devices I've owned.
That all said, I only use the Defender when added protection is needed. The Commuter is my favorite case and has been on my past 3 devices.

I always go for the maximum protection.

Are you sure the Defender you have/used is for the Verizon Nexus? It could be for the GSM version. If so, where did you buy it?

I got my OtterBox Defender at a Verizon corporate store at the same time I picked up my Nexus. Definitely should be the Verizon version. Didn't even come in the standard Otterbox packaging either, it came in a Verizon branded box.
Got the Commuter from a non corporate store though and it came in the standard Otterbox packaging.

I decided to get the Defender after all, considering the fact that the Nexus doesn't have Gorilla Glass.

The Galaxy nexus does have harden glass like gorilla glass...it's just made by a different company.
