Are screen protectors really necessary?

Had mine since july, been debating about it, still haven't done it, don't think I will. No scratches yet.

As I said before, I have plenty of scratches so it's not just people being paranoid ...

I can't speak for Corning glass but I've been thankful for every screen protector I've used once I dropped whichever device despite having a death grip on the device when it bumped out of my hand.

Another reason to get a non-glare screen protector is for a better feel under your finger. On the plain glass screens, I get a very slight discomfort where my finger rubs on the glass. With a non-glare screen protector, it's more like running my finger over a piece of paper with reduced friction and a better feel.

Screen protectors definitely aren't necessary, but neither is health insurance, until something happens where you need it. I've had dozens of devices that I ran naked, no cases, no screen protectors, and nothing ever happened. Then one day, the tiniest bit of sand was in my pocket from a trip to the beach, and the things it did to my Galaxy Nexus screen were horrible. This was a phone that I dropped nearly $700 dollars on, and every single time I looked at the screen, I saw these unsightly gashes.

My only complaint with screen protectors is how awful they look and feel. The only options were pretty much cheap slick plastic that feels ok, but scratches fast and looks like garbage, or one of the gummy "apply wet" type protectors like a Zagg or Skinomi TechSkin, which do a better job of protecting the screen and holding up to damage, but dont hold a candle to the smoothness of glass, and often give an orange peel type affect. However, there is now the option of tempered glass protectors, which are nearly unnoticeable, feel just like a naked screen, and protect amazingly well. The price is quite a bit higher than the plastic protectors, but I think they're worth every penny. Xgear has one for the N7 called the Phantasm. I would recommend the investment to just about anybody who has concerns for their screen.

SGP makes awesome screen protectors. The ultra crystal line makes it and feels like there is no screen protector at all. Does not require fluid for install like zagg. It is not sticky to the touch. I use it for all my phones. Does not compromise the screen colors or light.

I used zagg in the past and hated it.

In 2012 screen protectors and cases are a scam, with a few exceptions. Phones should be naked. Tablets should have some kind of case and a naked screen.

I always prefer to use a screen protector with all my touchscreen devices.

I don't have one and mines perfect just be careful, I use a case to carry it around in then take it out to use it.

After nearly 2 months naked without a single scratch, I went and spent $27 on a stupid screen protector (SGP) "just in case". Big mistake! It's as soft as butter, scratched straight out of the packaging and has a weird rainbow effect at certain angles that's annoying as Hell!

So I've decided to go back to naked. The glass is way tougher than that overpriced stupid plastic any day!

I have to strongly disagree. SGP is overpriced rubbish from my experience.

I'm a paying customer with an Ultra Clear, right now, on one of my Nexus 7s. It has a rainbow effect and scratched super easy.

Buyer Beware and YMMV.

Really depends on how well its taken care of. I'm very careful on where I put my Nexus 7 (32 GB as well) but still accidents can happen. I'm waiting on a silicone skin to arrive and was debating whether to get a screen protector as it does get a little smudgy each day of usage. Trying to find a perfect screen protector is expensive and a gamble now a days so other than the smudges (that can be easily cleaned) I'm leaning towards going naked.

Both Zagg and Skinomi have never let me down. They are on all of my devices. Someone mentioned it is like insurance and they are exactly right. Sure the glass feels great, but it will scratch, and id rather have a scratch free screen than a naked retired Porn star stretch mark of a screen.

I don't use a screen protector on mine, but I do however keep my n7 in a leather case that protects the screen when I'm not using it.

Yes and No.
Yes if your high risk of damaging it, eg when i dont have a arm band and put it in my waist line for running.
No if you want the real style how its designed for

Never used it with a device as large as the N7 but my husband and I use SGP on our phones and are both satisfied. Mine never scratched besides with my keys and my can opener on the keychain. No rainbow effect or discoloration.

So don't know, maybe you just got a bad one. Next time when I need a screen protector, I'll buy from them.

And no, I don't work for them or anything like that. Just been a satisfied customer in the past.

I have invisisheild on mine and the Seidio Active case. I don't like how the invisishield makes the screen feel and look. I'm considering taking it off.

Others are right. I think phones need them but tablets... not so much.

As I'm sure the OP has figured out by now, it's all dependent on the person and how they use their device. The only thing I can add is that the screen is the life and blood of your N7, and it's how your interface with it 100% of the time (if you don't count the power and volume buttons). Once you scratch and damage this interface there is no going back.

So, it's really all up to you, the user.

I too use protectors on my phones and tablet. I use to buy them off eBay for about 1$ for any phone. But the cheap ones just left your prints everywhere. I am a big fan of Zagg Invisible shield. You can get a whole phone shield for about 12$ anywhere online. Haven't wiped my screen in weeks and it looks crystal clear! Anti glare as well helps out.
