Are the people who work for HTC USA brain dead?

Apple goes through the same approvals, they are just smarter about releasing to everyone at once. They screwed it up badly too with Verizon and seem to have learned from the outcry. But, if the one was an iPhone, it would have had 4.2.2 out of the box and you'd be getting the 4.3 update next April.

no they don't.

apple doesnt sell in my country. and i have been able to update my iphone and ipod time and again with no problem.

After the updating debacle that has taken place with their previous phones, how in the world is it possible for HTC to take so long to release updates for the HTC One in the USA? It isn't like the update isn't finished yet b/c it's been available in other parts of the world for over a month now! They also can't blame the carriers b/c they haven't released the update for the unlocked 32 GB or the 64GB develop editions either! This can only be attributed to the fact that the people who work in their USA offices are either 1. brain dead or 2. are sitting on their hands and simply willing to let the company go into bankruptcy.

HTC stated when the One was released that it would receive a TIMELY update to 4.2.2 but even I'll admit I was foolish to fall for their nonsense once again. I'm done...I will never purchase another device from HTC again. If they want to know why they're continuing to lose market share even with the best device on the market, it's b/c their company has AWFUL customer support, they don't communicate with their customers at all, and they simply don't stand by their word or their products. They haven't even made a single statement regarding why the US release has been delayed...it's simply a joke.

I'm sorry for posting this simply to vent but at this point it's 100% justified and HTC deserves the backlash they're receiving.

Well I mean htc will update to 4.3 and if not if thats a empty rumor then blame the carriers not the company. The international version gets updates from htc itself while for the ones sold in north america they go to carrier and then to your phone. If updates are that important to you then I recommend a nexus 4. HTC hasnt abondened you, you just need patience theres nothing in 4.2.2 that you cant go another day without. If you want lock screen widgets then get go launcher or go locker and if you want battery percentage then download an app

Sorry, I'm referring to approvals to use the networks. I think you're referring to who distributes the update. All LTE capable devices go through network certification.

I believe there are 4.3 +Sense custom ROMs available. I'll prolly just go that route. This is getting old.

:-o already? I jumped to 4.2.2 ARHD recently, and I'm kinda waiting for the 4.3+Sense ROMs too.

Could you please link to any that you found? Thanks.

Almost 2 weeks later and still no update for the dev edition. Not even any sort of update from HTC regarding what's causing the delay or an ETA. It's just bad public relations and customer support all around.

Not really. The number of people that buy the Dev edition is miniscule. There is very little, if any, public relations impact at all.

What about the entire North American continent that also hasn't received the update yet?

I don't think the carriers are releasing it. Maybe that HTC employee shifted the blame to the carriers. I think it won't work like this because the unlocked devices and international versions are that, international, carrier independent phones. I bought the US unlocked model and I live in Mexico. The phone is not available on this country yet.

If what that rep is saying is true, people wouldn't be able to update as long as their current carrier sells the phone and has tested the updates. I believe it's either ignorance on his part or just a response to shift the heat to the carriers, which in many cases they are at fault when testing/releasing updates on their subsidized phones.

Ajua, you win a gold star! You quoted the email I received from HTC on the topic of who issues upgrades to HTC unlocked, unbranded phones. Soon after I received that email I also received a survey from HTC inquiring whether I was satisfied with customer service, to which I replied in the negative.

A few moments ago I received a phone call from HTC asking what it was that I was dissatisfied with. I replied that I had spent around $600 on an unlocked phone on the understanding (admittedly an assumption on my part) that I would receive future upgrades from HTC, not from my carrier (AT&T) -- and that had I known that to not be the case I might just as well have saved myself $400 and bought the phone for $199 on contract from AT&T.

I was then told that whichever rep responded to me was completely incorrect ("confused" was the word she used), and that as I had an unlocked, unbranded phone all updates to my phone would emanate directly from HTC. She apologized for the confusion and assured me that "clarifications will be made in the customer service area regarding upgrade policies for different types of phones."

I then asked the obvious question: So, when should I expect an upgrade from HTC? Unfortunately, I got the usual answer: "We'll tell you when we're ready." So on that score I don't know any more than I did before. But it is good to know that I will not be getting AT&T bloatware on my phone via a software "upgrade".

I would like to add as a long-time iPhone user that I could not be happier with my HTC One in every respect -- and I'll feel the same way even if I never see 4.2.2.

forgive me from being sceptical but if this is true and also living in a country where the htc one has not yet officially arrived this brings relief.

of course, i take it with a grain of salt, because judging from all the different answers here no one really knows what the hell is going on. still, this theory is far more logical than unlocked phones being dependent on their carrier of choice.

I don't understand how radios are the cause of the hangup? I thought the radio partition was sequestered from the rest of the phone? Shouldn't we be able to update everything else without touching the proprietary radio software and just have that come as a update from the carrier that they make that won't bork the software? Basically the system we have but reversed. Just be sure to make the new OS software compatible with existing radio software and let the carriers push radio updates separately similarly to how google did the thing with services or is my admittedly infantile knowledge of how these things work just really far off base?

The carriers want to make sure the updates are quality, since their stores and tech support have to deal with the fallout if it isn't.
They want to test the radios to make sure they don't mess with the network.

Ahh, I see. Manufacturers should step up. I remember back when I had a Blackberry, Sprint wouldn't answer any questions and directed me to BB who straightened everything out pretty quickly. It was honestly the best tech support experience I ever had. But then again look at BB now...
