Are the people who work for HTC USA brain dead?

I would actually say the carriers are quite happy with NOT updating the phones since they have to certify the updates, test them (Verizon goes that extra 4 months of testing just for you) and in the end delays them for months upon months unlike the international markets. In the end the carriers could care less when or if you ever get an update since you are very, very likely stuck on a contact for 2 years so they got you by the short and curlies.

So very true! But I still think they want you, and the manufacturer to be happy. Otherwise, you'll switch to a different brand or you'll pay the ETF (which is still cheaper then paying the full 2 year term) and go to another carrier. Heck, some will even help cover the ETF cost to switch.

I don't understand what the big deal is just to say you have android 4.2.2 I have almost everything it offers right out of the app store. Who cares about it, saying you'll never buy a HTC phone again because your phone can't say it's 4.2.2 the same time as everyone else. The HTC one is a badass awesome phone. If the update was going to make my phone 100% better then it was then yeah I can understand but guess what, it's not and yeah they should communicate better but it's the carriers that hold it up longer then it's supposed to be most of the time.

It has more to do with timely updates, security patches and bug fixes. You have a nice laptop don't you, well what if Microsoft said suck it and never patched the laptop or HP said no updates for a buggy BIOS what would you do. I suspect you would NOT buy their products.

What we are asking for is neither unreasonable or unexpected. The GPe was touted as having quick updates, that phrase is vague in and of itself yet we are left to the belief that Nexus is immediate (within a week as it rolls out globally) and we have a justified expectation that GPe would be quick(ly) after that.

Samsung has already seen numerous leaks roll out and HTC has ZERO leaks of GPe 4.3. Why is that, because they clamped down so hard on the devs and built in watermarks to identify who leaked it that no one wants to be bothered.

HTC was the darling of Android and fell hard, if they don't deliver they will simply go the route of BlackBerry, Nokia and Danger, and become irrelevant and sold for parts on the junk heap.

The below is HTC's response to my query regarding an update for my unlocked One purchased directly from HTC:

"Thanks for contacting HTC Technical Support Center in regards to the Android 4.2.2 update.

"Phillip; as much as I would like to give you a different answer, Jonathan provided you the actual official position of HTC regarding software updates: HTC no longer announces dates for release of software due to the nature of the software development process. At any point in the software development cycle a situation may be encountered that requires anything from some minor additional rework, to complete rewrites of the software base. Only after the final acceptance testing has been successfully completed will HTC release software.

"We work hand in hand with the carriers to make sure everything works fine. Regarding the update for the unlocked not branded version of the phone, the update will be rolled by the carrier the phone is running on. Until it is released by the carriers, I advise you to stay tuned for further news as to when is it going to be available for you."

Couldn't be any clearer -- or any more contrary to my understanding when I purchased this phone.

Exactly, so this certifies that I will not be buying another phone from HTC if this is their business model. I paid $649+tax and shipping for an unlocked non-bloated device. No where did it say anywhere at any time the update to 4.2.2 or beyond was related to AT&T. Had it said so I would have PASSED and gone elsewhere. So enough said, no more HTC phones and this means it's no better than getting bent over by Verizon Wireless and their BS update procedures and locked bootloaders.

Exactly my thoughts. I'll try out some custom ROMs, but if I'm not completely thrilled I'll be dumping this device as soon as there's a Nexus worth buying.

Exactly. Apple has this problem solved. I wish the Android world could too.

Apple took the carriers by the ballz and made it them their bitches. They have mega sales from mega iphone idiots. So Google had the ability to do this, but chose the ad revenue in exchange for a free OS which opened pandora's box to all sorts of issues we have today. While I hate iOS and their crappy little phones and WILL NEVER GO BACK I prefer to run custom ROM's but it does take time for the developers to get it done right. I will say there is awesome work happening now on 4.3 for the HTC One.

If you haven't noticed, hTc has rolled out what...3 updates now to "patch" or "fix" security flaws and performance enhancements? So that is a non-issue. The issue you're stating is being updated to the latest and greatest. All manufacturers promise to update to to 4.x.x or whatever Google puts out... BUT in the contract you sign, no where does it state that YOU are ENTITLED to the latest and greatest. So if the carrier doesn't want you to have it....you're not going to get it, unless you root and do it yourself.

You said it yourself...."it does take time for the developers to get it done right." How long do you expect htc to get it right? A week?

Exactly. I paid premium for getting faster updates ( which now doesn't seem like it's going to happen) and not having bloatware.. If both of them are not happening,, had I know that before, I would have just paid 200 or less to get the same phone from ATT....

Samsungs version doesn't have an official 4.3 yet either. Just a leaked version. So your blaming htc for not having it yet....man, that's like saying my Lenovo laptop doesn't have a T key yet...neither does Samsung laptops but a leaked T key has been spotted...so I'm not buying another Lenovo ever again!!! Makes no sense.

Just for kicks though, my laptop is a Samsung Chronos series 7....not a Lenovo...

This is squarely HTC's issue to deal with. Comparing them to Apple, or Samsung or even Toshiba (lol) is the wrong way to go.

HTC unfairly has the stigma of a company that won't update their Android phones timely, because of a few high-profile devices that they should have never built. True or not, they have to deal with this. This isn't how you deal with it well. Doing things like sending out a fix for the T-Mobile camera the same day it was acknowledged as a bug is how you do it.

This is the most interesting thread I've read on a long time. Jerry, thank you for the education! So as I'm understanding this, those that bought the DE HTC ONE will not receive 4.2.2 from HTC directly but will have to take the ota from AT&T?

You use their network, you deal with their update approval. Period. You were never promised anything by purchasing unlocked or developer editions, and any expectation of carrier-free updates was an assumption on your part not based on any fact.

Why exactly do you think AT&T would have ANY say in how the Developer Edition gets updated or certified. The DE, International and AT&T models are the same hardware but that is where they STOP being the same. AT&T loads their bloatware, controls the OS updates and certification, I have a DE, converted to a GPe and AT&T has NO SAY in how I use it, ROM it, or do whatever I want with it. I have their SIM and that's it.

Because in order for your phone to access LTE, att must provide software that allow access. Unless they can be assured that updates will not screw with their network, they don't provide the software.

That's what happens when an open standard (wimax) loses to a highly closed standard. (LTE)

I finally caved and rooted my One. I installed Android Rev HD and finally have 4.2.2. I did mess up a few things because it was my first time doing this, but it worked out just fine in the end.

I like having no black menu bar at the bottom, and the batt% in the status bar looks sweet. Also, the pressing 'back' to exit the app drawer is awesome. Widget lockscreen is nice, but being unable to change the wallpaper in that 'widget lockscreen' mode is kinda annoying. Not too many changes that I notice, but the fixes are things that are definitely useful.

If yall are mad now, I can't wait till Verizon releases the one on 8-15 with 4.2

I think we'll get it from HTC. Probably an OTA and the RUU. But like I said, I'm pretty sure AT&T has to OK some of it because it's their stuff. Software distributed with the phone is pretty different from software distribution as a separate (though not quite stand alone, they're binary patches) product.

Here's your leaked 4.3 for the one! So now Sammy and hTc have leaked versions. Feel better now that things are a bit more even now?

Come to think of it... Did it say anywhere at all where the updates came from for the unlocked HTC One? Or did you ASSUME it was from them? If it said from HTC and it's not then I could see your frustration but I doubt it said anything...

Sounds like maybe your assumptions caused your grief. Do research always.. Such as maybe you should of grabbed the Google Edition.

Who else would update the unlocked devices purchased directly from HTC? Being that past, smaller updates were released directly from HTC and that fact that it has no carrier software or apps, it's clearly not the carriers. So who do else do you think could be releasing this update?
