Ask us about the Verizon Droid Incredible

Hey guys,

Does anyone know what kind of charger the Incredible will be using. I know it says micro USB, but if you look closely at the port, it look different from the micro USB i'm used to on a blackberry storm for instance.

Can anyone please clear this up?

Thanks!

In one video I saw (maybe the one here?) they said it looks like it's different, but a normal micro USB fits.

I had thought the same thing. I think it's shaped a little different for the connector that's used for the TV Out. But they said that a Micro USB charger fits in there fine.

Sense UI

Is it possible to disable the Sense UI without rooting the phone and (re)installing 2.1? Also, can we get a comparison of battery life to the Nexus 1? Something simple like radios off, with a video file on loop to get battery life estimates would be great.

Sense UI cannot be disable like on the Droid Eris. The only way to do this is to install another home, ex Helix 1 or 2. I have tested this out personally. There is no Stock Android Home that can be accessed without installing alternate home apps.

Does anyone know if the Incredible will be bluetooth compatible with the microsoft bluetooth function of the new Ford Fusion?

We get it ... You guys have questions. First things first: Check out all of our official coverage here. And if you still have questions, ask 'em in this thread, and we'll do a roundup of answers in a few days.

When's the round up of questions coming ? I guess we have to wait until people actually get the phone in their hands : )

Can you look in a crystal ball and tell us if we would be happier with the Droid or the Incredible. ( just kidding, I know it's a personal choice)

How, if at all, does the phone integrate with Picasa? Will my albums from Picasa automatically show on my phone or is there an integrated Widget that allows an easy view?

In Android 2.1 the contents of your Picassa albums show up in your gallery app.

In the camera and gallery there is a Share menu option and one of the options is to upload to Picassa and there are options to select a google account, gallery name etc.

So there is no Picassa app per se but there really isn't a need for one. It seems pretty integrated into the phone.

Now the above is stock 2.1 on the moto droid so there may be some difference with Sense bit I would imagine it is similar.

EDIT: This is incorrect. Sense UI uses Flicker instead of Picassa :-( However there are several apps on the Market for dealing with Picasa.

has the introduction of this phone resolved the problem of being on a call and needing to look at the map/get online etc...
everyone knows it will multitask but will it run voice AND data at the same time?

This is a CDMA device so no voice and data. There is now way around this until the transition to LTE. That does not mean that you wont be able to use GPS at all on a call, only that you wont be able to download additional map data while on a call.

Not even if you have the wifi turned on? Would seem you could to it if you had an access point near by.

I stand corrected. If you are in range of WiFi then yes that is a way around the problem BUT let me ask you how do you expect to use WiFi if you are traveling? MiFi?

If this has Been asked already, I apologize. Will the incredible allow you to use it as a wifi hot spot? If so, is there an additional expense per month? After five years I am finally going to get a phone other than a blackberry. I'm pretty excited!

That depends on the hot spot. Some are free while some cost. I know you get it free in Barnes & Noble (Starbucks) and McDonalds, as well as most hotels and contention centers these days.

Has anyone heard when they are going to make a modification to allow apps on the internal flash drive or the removable SD flash card. This change would make the Incredible truly incredible.

Thus far this feature does not exist in Android outside of rooting and before you get your hopes up from what I have read it also slows the app in question down. I know from first hand experience that it does on BB.

How long after I buy it before the phone is no longer Incredible? Just curious so I can start saving now for the next next best thing.

3-6 months depending. That's pretty much the norm now. The best thing now is the Droid which came out in Nov. Now in May the Incredible (and EVO) will one up it. I'm expecting something else (Droid2 maybe?) to eclipse it for the holiday season.

Sucks I know but that's just how it is now with tech.

Once upon a time the conventional wisdom was to wait several months for them to get the bugs out and to not buy first generation devices. But honestly now I recommend to the serious tech consumer to not buy any phone that is more than 3-4 months old because the next best thing will come out just after your 30 day return/exchange date and you will experience serious buyers remorse...

I'll take a crack at the ones that are 2.1 specific

My questions (and I'm sure some are just android 2.1 specific):

3) Is there any way to "hide" applications, folders, and email accounts?
(Like BB's do)

You can't hide them no but you dont have to have them on your home screen either. All of your installed apps will be listed in alphabetical order in your app drawer or launcher.

4) Does predictive text automatically learn? (like names and abbreviations)

YES. Over time it learns and anticipates the ones you will want

5) Are input text fields "smart?" (like only allowing numbers in zip code, correct state abbreviations, predictive text of prior inputted company names)

That's an app by app thing. I've seen some that are some that are not. No idea about Sense
6) Are third party applications and user data easily restored when doing system software (OS) updates?

Yes. Google: Nandroid

9) How quick is a universal search and can you selectively pick what ares to look? (email, text, documents, etc.)

10) Does universal search take you to the document or to the specific area of a document with the search string? (BB's take you to the document, then you have to search within the document. The old Palm OS took you to the spot within the document without further action, but didn't allow selective search...say just emails from a specific person.)

You need a third party app for that unless Sense has something, so I don't know.

Will the push available be configurable so if I don't want emails from a certain address pushed to my phone (talking gmail here) it can be done?

You can control which gmail accounts sync email (and contacts and calendar) to your phone yes.

I can't imagine the relationship with Google and HTC can be that great when HTC comes out with two smokin' devices (Incredible and Evo) right after the Nexus One. I mean Google is struggling to sell this thing as it is and then HTC comes out with two devices that completely trump the Nexus One. I would think there would be some sort of non-comp agreement. Anything on the grapevine?

It's not a consideration for them. The N1 was never meant to be a mass market consumer phone. If it was then they would market it better. It was meant for developers and phone geeks like us who want high specs and the newest OS ASAP without having to worry about third party software being rewritten before we get our upgrades.

That's a very subjective question. I would suggest you go to the VZW store and play with the Moto Devour; both have Flash light support.

if you do this (you can also try out the eris if you really want as it has flash lite as well) keep in mind the devour and the eris both have substantially slower processors compared to the incredible.

but, until 10.1 comes out, don't expect anything spectacular

Ah, i didn't phrase that well. I mean emails to one of my gmail accounts FROM a certain address. There are emails (say from a certain website alert) that I like to see in my mailbox on the web, but don't like pushed to my phone. I.e. lemurs@monkeys.com sends an alert to my gmail and while I like to see that in the web browser on my PC, I don't want to get an email alert on my phone every time a new monkey video is released. :-)

(No such site exists, that was merely an example)
