Asus Nexus.... black screen and not working..

so my friend came and dropped off his asus nexus tablet.. it shows google and a lock on the bottom of the screen, and i get nothing else out of it. i have tried the power and volume down buttons and did the wipe data feature and than let it "restart" it appeared to do this just fine.. but ends up back to the black screen with google and the lock screen again.. no shining X or anything... i am new to android but not new to the computer tech field.. i just have no idea how to use androids. a prompt reply would be very helpful..

(as far as figuring out which tablet this is i can only pull the serial off from the tablets screen while in the boot menu)

Does it have a camera on the rear? Is Nexus written horizontally or vertically across the back and does it have a silver bezel or is it all black? If it's Yes, vertically and black it's the 2013 version, otherwise it's the 2012. Not much else will matter until it's running.

The 1st two trouble shooting questions are can you tell if it's accepting a charge while it's powered off and does it register as a drive when plugged into a PC via USB?
