I think I have an answer as to why a black one isn't available. Over on XDA someone from the UK tried buying one on contract and apparently the black ones didn't pass quality checks because the paint falls off. This was also a problem with the black iPhone 5 with it being shipped chipped This whole thing is just a mess.

This is what boggles me. HTC is not a small mom and pop shop. I'm sure they did durability tests and saw the paint chips off. They should have known and tried to figure out a fix. What a mess.
Well remember the whole iPhone 4 in white and then the black iPhone 5. Took them months to get a white iPhone 4 out. And they are much bigger than HTC. There are reasons for delays.

I am able to place an order as a NEW customer, no contract. I JUST got off the phone with AT&T and they said that if I buy it at no comittment as a new line all i need to do is put my current sim in and call att to get my IMEI swap and there would be no penalties. I think im going to go this route because I remember when i ordered the lumia on premier i was unable to get the free wireless charger, while it looks like this way ill get the $90 media link.
I'll give this much credit to HTC, I'm sure getting the black anodized finished is quite difficult as Apple hasn't even solved it. And I'm sure a lot of the issues with these phones will be because of how it's made, as carving a single piece of aluminium into a phone is something that hasn't been done before (the iPhone is nowhere near as difficult to make) but this stuff shouldn't happen. If you can't get the launch of the phone right then maybe you need to reschedule a date for a proper launch. I know a rescheduling would be bad for them as it would give the S4 a head start, but this just looks bad. Now people that want the black either have to settle for silver or wait until the black one is released, if one is released at all. You can launch a Facebook phone and have it ready to be released at around the same time as the One, but you can't get your flagship of the year right.

Order off contract too but mine show media link is$99 or $90 (not free) so I remove it. Don't know it free.
Are there issues with the iPhone 5?
Not a phone, but Apple has been doing this with laptops for some time now.
As someone who is waiting on the developer version of the One this announcement today kinda pissed me off. I wonder how much effort was taken away from the launch of the One to enable the Facebook phone to hit the target date.

Yep. The mid back and the edges of the i5 are anodized just like I'm assuming the black version of the One is. At the launch of the phone, people unboxed the phone just to find scuff marks and marks in general that revealed the natural aluminium color. You also hear about people putting the phone in a case only to later take the case off and find that the paint has peeled off in minor areas. I'm assuming HTC is having the same issues.
I had no idea about the quality of macbooks, thanks for telling me. But yeah, I had meant more of the phone kind. A single piece of aluminium and a zero gap design would be pretty hard to manufacture, along with the camera, and HTC has admitted as much. Which is why I don't understand why they thought it was a good idea to manufacture another phone in conjunction with it. If anything, delay the Facebook phone so you can do everything you can for this one. I promise no one would care, lol.
It's just stuff like this that gets people frustrated at HTC, especially when it seemed like they finally had their heads on straight.
This is what I'm planning on doing. Ordered the phone at the no commitment price as a new customer. Then call them to not activate the service and keep the phone so I can use with prepaid. I'll see what happens but I think its easily done and as long as I paid full price no issues. Question about imei swap? You mean between an existing account and new? Also, I removed the media link. Didn't want that complicating things.

And you won't get anything until black ones are available or until Best Buy contacts you and tells you that the that model has been discontinued and tries to give you a silver one or issues a refund. If Sprint and especially AT&T won't have it at launch then no one will.
I think thats BS. That dev edition should be available today. No need to hold off until then.
I still have the grandfathered unlimited data plan, and the reps always tell me I have to upgrade my phones in the store because the online system does not allow for the grandfathered plans and it would knock me out of that plan if I order online. I want to ask if anyone else knows anything about this, can I pre-order online and keep my plan or do I have to hope that my store gets the phones in and do it there? Because all of the reps I have talked to in the past couple weeks always say they only do pre-orders on big (popular) phones like iPhone, I'm going to go to the store tomorrow and see if their story has changed.
