AT&T & TMO merger make me hesitant to upgrade

So, I decided to finally join. Been reading the news here and watching the Podcast for sometime now. Still stuck on the original iPhone 2G (4GB), but have been planning to upgrade and go android for many moons. Just when I decided to pull the switch AT&T announces it's swallowing T-Mobile. Now, I think I should wait out the merger.

I like TMO's $30/mo for "unlimited" data and texting and 100 minutes/mo b/c I could use VOIP to talk, but I don't want my phone to be worthless if/when the merger happens. Even if the merger doesn't go thru, TMO will be way behind on LTE. What to do? What to do? :'(

Also, can someone tell me how to make my profile pic display. My screen shows my pic as the generic android robot with arms crossed?? Thks!

When on the forum... Right under the header on the top left of the screen there's a menu that says USER CP... go to edit avatar. You can also edit any other info about yourself from there as well.
