at the top of my phone, it shows an e when 3g goesn

The symbol 3g sometimes appears at the top of my phone In the bar and then an e shows up and I cant go on Internet. Is it because an e appears and why? What does the e and Ee mean?

What kind of phone, and which mobile carrier?

The 3G and E symbols indicate the type of connection your phone is using to communicate with the mobile network. E stands for EDGE, which is the technology that preceded the introduction of 3G, HSPA and LTE networks, and each evolutionary step in this process resulted in the availability of higher-speed data connections for mobile devices.

It seems like you may be in a weak signal area, or perhaps even an area without 3G or LTE availability. Or perhaps your phone doesn't have access to the frequencies your carrier uses for 3G or LTE networks.
