Attempting root tomorrow

I have decided I want to root/debloat my fascinate. I am still very confused on what to do. I have been doing some reading but there is so much information I get lost.

I plan on using a mac, so can I still do the one click root??? Or do i have to follow the instructions on the how to root on mac video tutorial? Im confused with how imputing all the commands.

Secondly, I dont know what to do next... I understand im supposed to do something with clockwork whatver that means? also, what about backing up?

when it comes to debloating... am i supposed to do the jts super clean rom? Do i combine that with the super fast kernal? How do i install those roms and kernals onto phone?


complete newb looking for alot of help. Thanks in advance

im following the instructions on the how to root for mac... and it says to download the rar at the bottom of the page... well when i click on that link nothing happens?

ideas?

one last question... since this rar isnt working... If i decide to use my girlfriends PC... do i do the one click root?? what bit do i use, 32 or 64.

also...tomorrow when i add the super clean rom and stuff... do i have to use a pc or can i use a mac.

Here is what I would do:

Download z4root from Market

Enable USB Debugging Mode under Settings>Applications> Development>USB Debugging(check this)

Run z4root

Your rooted!

Download RomManager

Install ClockWork Recovery via PC/Mac(idk what the steps are for a Mac but on Windows you have to use odin)

Download either JT Super Clean ROM or Blackhole ROM(both are great but Blackhole is just a little bit more de-bloated)

*I prefer Blackhole*

Then once its downloaded a window will pop up asking if you want to backup and/or whip data and cache

I would do a backup and whip data and cache (WARNING!!! this will remove your settings and installed apps from Market)

*I use Titanium Backup Pro to back up all of my apps so I don't have to go through the hassle of downloading/installing them again*

Then once that process is completed you will be rooted and have a custom ROM

Last select a Kernel from RomManager and install it.(You don't have to whip data and cache this time just do a backup)

Your all good to go!

Alright, it's probably easier to use a PC if you wanna do the 1-click method. 32 or 64 bit depends on the version of windows on the comp, check the settings. You can get all of that info from this thread.

After that get ROM Manager, Titanium Backup Pro, and Root Explorer from the Market. Use ROM Manager to make a backup of your stock configuration. You can use Titanium Backup Pro to "freeze" apps/bloatware or you can use Root Explorer and move all the stuff it says is safe to move. Read Cory's Post in this Thread.

also... dumb question but in the video it tells me to reboot... does that mean just turn off phone and turn back on? lol.

also... what about the rar file in the how to root on a mac.. it does not work

It used to be more invloved but all the time there is something that is easier to use to root. The z4root app is just a few days old...

I would give geekniks kernel a shot...

I haven't used the z4Root method, but the 1-click method for a PC was easy, the hardest part was waiting. The lengthy guides are for people who want to do the manual way.

And no you cant install the StupidFast kernel via ROM Manager. But you can get JT's Non-Voodoo (stable/test). And almost any Rom you want.

Is there a difference between mac and PC for the clockwork mod?

Then download jt or black hole?

Then click backup and whipe in the popup i will get?

And i dont know about mac and pc differences using CWM, but i wouldn't think so. And i would install CWM Recovery before ROM Manager, other than that sounds good.

what does this mean?

There have been reports of lagfix making nandroid run extremely slow. We have seen on entire system crash due to lagfix + CWM. Removing lagfix first is HIGHLY recommended.

The lagfix is only part of the VooDoo kernels which you don't have to worry about.

Just FYI, there's no *need* to switch to a new kernel. By far, the most bang you'll get for your buck is with switching to a new system rom like JT's. If you're new to all this, which it seems you are, there's no need to replace every single component of the OS. Why don't you just start with the system and leave playing around with the kernel for later?

Windows drivers are different for 32bit and 64bit OS's, so if you're using 32bit Windows, you need to use the 32bit drivers. 64bit drivers for the 64bit OS.

I am currently rooted, and have superuser access in the app drawer. Now im doing clockwork if thats correct? i dont know if i should use the 32 or 64 bit.

What version of Windows are you using? 32bit or 64bit? I thought you said you were on a Mac... are you using bootcamp to run Windows as well?
