[Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**5/20** w/MR1 update

I was just able to backup everything on the card (only 2.75gb) to my computer so the card is not write protected.

Trying to unroot my phone but two problems - my Volume UP button doesn't work, that's why I had to get a replacement, and after the phone reboots, it goes into Fastboot Mode but does nothing, just sits there. Only options are Bootloader, Reboot, Reboot Bootloader and Power down. I select bootloader, then Fastboot again and get SD Checking - Loading and for each file it says No Image or Wrong Image and just takes me back to square one.

Oh, I am on the BAMF 1.6.3 Remix Rom as well. Not sure if the radio changed things.

it means the file didnt write to your sdcard, try unroot again.......as far as the volume up button not working i dont know what else to do since you need volume up to accept the update

Tried the process 6 different times with 3 different SD Cards. Ill worry about the volume up when/ifi I get to it, heh.

Heyo. New guy here. I just wanted to double check if this works with the latest OTA update (Baseband :1.16.00.0402w_1 and Build number: 1.13.605.7 CL341545 release-keys)

If so, I think I'm finally going to give this rooting process a shot.

Thanks in advance! :]

Rooting on the TB isnt like rooting other phones

first it gains temp root
then flashing an image to allow you to downgrade the stock image
this downgrade allows to shut off security
once security is off it temp roots installs hboot
then you upgrade to a rooted stock version.
I have not updated this with the rooted update yet so this leaves you with the original rooted stock image.

so after you use this tool you need to get the rooted OTA image which can be found here
[ruu][rooted][MR1 aka OTA] CONFIRM Build Number: 1.13.605.7 Baseband: 1.16.00.0402w_1 - xda-developers
read that thread over you will basically have to download the image, then place it on your sdcard and rename then flash it from bootloader

or you can wait for me to update this when i have time

I appreciate the response. :]

I think I'll wait for an updated version of an autoroot from you, good sir.

I've been interested in rooting for some time but I think if I were going to fiddle around with it I'd rather tinker on my retired Droid X than my currently in use Thunderbolt.

first open up titanium, at the bottom it says "problems" then get busybox update.

if that doesnt fix it

go to the market and download busybox see if that help , reboot the phone

This has not been tested. So please forgive me if it doesnt run perfectly. Try this at your own risk Android Central nor I are responsible for anything you do to your phone.

  • Set the phone to Charge only
  • Open TB_Auto_root Folder
  • Double click Start_Root MR1
  • Follow prompted directions carefully

Before I try this tonight, let me just ask this noob question. This will wipe all data from my phone such as apps, pictures, music, phone numbers, etc., correct? If so, is there a way to get them back? I have only rooted a phone once and that was the OGD with z4root and I don't remember it wiping everything. I figured it was time to root since the OTA update appears to have caused an issue in my phone where it restarts multiple times per day on its own and I am sick of this bloatware.

since you are flashing the whole system image yes you are going to wipe your data. you can use your gmail account to back up your contacts .
also you can purchase mybackup pro from the market which will allow you to back up without root

Is it ok to use auto root after you have installed the newest OTA update? I had to un root and am uncomfortable with ADB commands unless I have to.

I am stuck. I got through most of the process but my phone will not reboot. It is just a black screen after I did the reboot highlighted below. What should I do now?

I did a battery pull and it finally booted. Do I move on to step 2 "Start root from after downgrade"?
