Re: [Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**5/20** w/MR1 updat

I did see your response. Going to attempt this again from scratch when I get home tonight and won't have all of my office programs running in the background as well. Hopefully that will solve this issue - keeping my fingers crossed....

Re: [Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**5/20** w/MR1 updat

in order to root with security off it needs to down_grade software, then after that you need to upgrade again.

the script does this, it temp roots, then kicks you into bootloader where you flash the downgrade,,,then it temp roots the downgrade, kicks you back into bootloader where you flash the upgrade and then you are rooted permenantly

When it is downgraded during rootin process, what kind of upgrade are we allowed after rooting? Can we do an OTA upgrade? Will that unroot? I seem to remember a provision of rooting, where if you (can't remember all the specifics) did an OTA upgrade after root, you lost root. As a matter of fact, I think that was with my Desire; it came rooted from the seller, but when VZW did an upgrade, the root was gone.

What is the upgrade process here if we want to keep root, but upgrade, say the VZW ROM (as I am happy with it the way it is), I just want to get rid of all the bloatware.

I want to root, just for the above, but what version of Android will it downgrade to, and how do I upgrade safely back to a current Android VZW ROM, while keeping root?

Sorry if I'm sounding stupid, just want to do it right.

I'm reading through these to see what others have experienced while downloading the auto-root program.

Root, make sure Superuser is in your app folder, test it by downloading shoot me app and giving that app superuser permissions.

After root you should be at stock so you can get titanium backup but there won't be much to save with it. And just so you know, don't restore SYSTEM DATA with titanium backup!! only user apps and data.

(Read the sticky by cyber warrior on creating backups and flashing roms first)
Next, download rom manager, give it su permissions, flash recovery, and create a nandroid back up.

After that, you can download and flash roms or kernels, just be sure to have that backup on your sd card in case you have a problem.

Always clear cache and dalvik before flashing, and if you are flashing from 1 rom to a different rom, do a full data wipe as well.

Then you can restore your user apps/data with titanium backup (there is a setting to filter out system data in TB so you won't have to guess which is which).

After root, is the radio still intact for phone / GPS usage, or is this something that is downgraded or wiped during the root process?

Is it easy to up the radio to a more current one after root?

Thanks

Re: [Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**5/20** w/MR1 updat

Additional pre-root ?.....

I would like to know if the following phone info has anything to do with whether or not the root process will be successful. The phone has already received an OTA update from VZW.

Version
2.2.1
Baseband
1.39.00.0627r, 0.01.69.0625r
Kernel
2.6.32.21-g0606a3a
Build
1.70.605.0 CL343953
Software
1.70.605.0
PRI
1.41_002, 1.64_002

With the above, do any of you experts know if my TB will have isues with the auto-root process?

Thank you in advance for your experience and expertise.

Yes the radio is still intact.. you will be back to an older update of the radio (MR1) and yes its very simple to update the radio after root back to the newest update (MR2).

You're fine to go and use the auto root.. as mentioned above the phone will be downgraded.. it will still run fine but you will be using an older update which after you root can be upgraded again to the newest update that's available for the phone.

I started the process, but when it got done pushing the initial files, the program is telling me to pull the battery, and restart the program. I pulled the battery once, reinstalled, turned phone back on, reconnected to USB, and restarted program. It went through the pushing of the initial files, and then told me to pull the battery and restart the program again.

Any ideas?

I'm going to reboot the computer here in a few mintues, and retry; will update if it still gives me the issue...

Almost finished; It is in the final reboot, but it seems to be stuck in the boot process after the Thunderbolt spash screen (got the Thunderbolt logo and the sound, then went to the clouds, and has been sitting there for about 5 minutes without doing anything.

Help?

Thanks

Pulling the battery, reinserting, and going to attempt power up.

Powered up fine.

Will follow directions tomorrow by d/l TiB to check for S-Off.

download titanium backup , hit the problems button , get busybox update. then reboot the phone

I see the 'Problems ?' button, but NO 'Get Busybox update'

Do I have to have the paid version of TiB? or is the free version good enough?

I think I'm rooted. The process went fairly smooth, and during boot, it shows S-Off.

busybox file is listed in the extractions of the TB Root stuff.

I upgraded the SuperUser

Any ideas?

Re: [Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**5/20** w/MR1 updat

Please read the quote box below; somehow my response / request for help got switched around.

I see the 'Problems ?' button, but NO 'Get Busybox update'

I'm quite sure the root process worked, because I made it through to where it says Complete, and the radio and HBOOT versions are different than when I started the process.

I upgraded the SuperUser; SU states the binary is outdated, and I attempted to auto-update that, but it failed. Stated it put a file on the SD card, and to boot into recovery mode, and flash the file. When I tried to boot using Pwr / Vol -, it goes to fast for me, and I can Vol - down to the recovery selection (the boot process only spends about a second on that page before it starts to check the PG05img process. (Goes too fast for me to make any selection with the volume keys)

Any ideas?

Okay, need some guidance...

I seem to be stuck at the TiB / SU / Busybox steps.

TiB is telling me that I don't have root. Shoot Me says "Failed starting server, make sure you have ROOT.

Pretty sure the root process worked, because I made it through to where it says Complete, and the radio and HBOOT versions are different than when I started the process.
When I turn on device with Pwr / Vol _, it boots to what looks like the process when it was being rooted, etc, etc, and shows S-Off.

I downloaded the free TiB, but when I hit the Problems? button, I don't see 'get busybox' anywhere (or am I not looking in the right place) Need some help here. Busybox file is listed with all the other extracted files for the auto root process.

Do I need to do the whole process again? If I have to, which auto-root download should be used, the one on page 1 with the OP, or the one that is buried in the multiple threads where the Unroot is also attached, where the two 'Download' links are spinning? (I used the one that was buried in the posts, NOT the auto-root d/l on page 1 with the OP.

Thank you in advance for all help provided.

Re: [Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**5/20** w/MR1 updat

After someone is able to help me figure out what problems I'm having from my above post / reply (to confirm that I have root)...

is it safe to do an OTA update of the software from VZW? Will it cause me to loose root?

Does a VZW OTA update update the ROM and radio to the most current?, or what does the OTA update do? or is this what should be done using HBOOT / Clockwork, etc to update the ROM / radio?

Thanks again, and hoping someone can help me figure out the above post-auto root problems.

Does the phone have to be 'unlocked' before attempting this root process? I thought that the rooting process was 'in essence' the process of 'unlocking' the phone.

How do I unlock (if needed) before trying the auto-root again?

Thanks

did you download the auto root alpha 2.1 file?????

and did you download the adb replacement files??

Where are these files? Have they been integrated into the OP download that is dated 5/20?

Thanks

Re: [Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**5/20** w/MR1 updat

You now have 10 posts in a row. Its an auto root program.. you download the program in the first post where it says DOWNLOAD in flames. As far as trouble shooting.. just wait until someone comes along and helps you. All of the files you need are included when you download the auto root program. There's also a How To Video listed in the first post that will walk you through everything.

I'm not sure what problems you're having but here are some common ones:
Right click the HTC Sync icon on the task bar of your computer and exit out of it.
Try using the USB ports on the back of the computer.
If you're using a laptop you may have issues with the usb ports.
Try using a different computer if you have one.

My experience with this root method was... I could not get it to work on a Windows 7 64Bit machine. I used another computer running XP and I had no problem.. everything went smoothly.

Thanks for your 'help'

Sorry, didn't know users had a 'maximum' post limit when on forums...Thank you for your help.

I'm not the only one who had issues / questions with this 'auto-root' process, otherwise there wouldn't be 130+ pages of posts and replies, so why are you singling me out?

1. I know it's an auto-root program
2. I did download the program from the OP
3. I am waiting for some help (guess I'll have to wait a bit longer); guess it won't be you
4. I did watch the video (before I downloaded the program); I've also read through this entire thread
5. Wasn't running HTC Sync; read that somewhere too, before proceeding
6. Was using a USB on the back of the computer; read that in the threads which was repeated multiple times to other who posted looking for help
7. Not using a laptop; don't have one. Read that others were having issues with laptops
8. Am running W764; if I can, I will try an older v of Windows if I can get my hands on a system without a 64-bit OS.

Has anyone else been able to succeed in this auto-root of the TB using W7 64-bit?

Other than the above, I thought I was clear regarding my problems; stated that I was able to run completely through the process, but was having issues with TiB / SU / and testing with Shoot Me, but I guess if you would have read my 10 posts, you'd of come across this, instead of counting how many times I posted looking for help.

Yes, maybe someone else will come along who can assist me in the very 'final' steps of testing the validity of the rooting. Thought since I saw your name early on in this process as a shared resource, that you might have some insight, but I'm sorry that I was mistaken.

Again, thanks for the criticizm of the amount of posts looking for assistance. No other single name has >10 posts in this thread besides me?

Have a good day :)

Patiently waiting for someone to assist, who doesn't need practice counting to 10.

Re: [Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**5/20** w/MR1 updat

You should post that this method is outdated. I just used the revolutionary method on my MR2 Thunderbolt and it worked flawlessly. Saved all my data and did not downgrade me. If you want to root and not wipe your phone or downgrade then have to reflash the mr2, just use revolutionary. -- http://revolutionary.io/

Re: [Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**5/20** w/MR1 updat

@hillsmi.... I'm not singling you out and there is no limit to post counts but when you have 10 out of 10 posts all in a row it turns into trolling the thread. A few posts asking for help is fine.. when someone can help.. they will. Posting over and over that you're having problems will not help.. it just flutters the threads. State your problem and wait until someone can help. If a day goes by.. then you can bump the thread once per day until someone answers your question.
Thank you and hope you get it figured out.. as mentioned there are other ways you can use to root the phone if the auto root isn't working for you. Manually using ADB would be better since then I can figure out what's going wrong step by step. Or try out the method above.

Were you able to d/l the required zip file from the linked page? the countdown keeps starting over at 10 secs and doesn't prompt me to d/l anything.

Thanks
