[Auto] Root and Unroot (Windows)**Updated**5/20** w/MR1 update

I just wanted to say thanks. This worked flawlessly for me. I used ver 2.1

Where do I send donations to?

UPDATE:
Made a stupid mistake.....

After rooting and installing BAMF 1.5, I accidentilly installed the signed RUU update and of course lost root.

I'm at work and can't try right now, but does anyone know if this auto root method works with the new signed RUU update?

I just want to say thank you very much for this! I can use adb if I have to but this was so much easier and worked perfectly!

Guys,

I've tried everything already - spent last 10 hours with this.

I got the Superuser app on the phone following the root procedure, but when I run the ROM manager, it still tells me that I have no root as well "superuser was not found in /system/bin/su"

I downloaded Titanium backup as per earlier suggestions, and hit problems, and downloaded busybox - still nothing.

I am really at dire straits here.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

3rd time and still get an error

I have tried and used your program 3 times now. everything goes well until I get to the "Do you want to upgrade the os" screen. I click yes, and then get a "fail-uz" in red after #3 MDM9K. From the first 2 attempts, IF I choose to reboot the TB, it will go to the white THC screen and then reboot, and reboot, and reboot, and reboot....until finally I pulled the battery. At which point the TB would still not boot back up correctly....

I found a fix to the problem .....pulled the sd card, copied over the 501 img file from an original folder and then I was able to at least get the phone to boot back up, but it was not rooted. I have even tried a different download of the img file, made sure there was no .zip.zip etc...lol... but for some reason, I can not get the phone to take the "new" rooted img file.

Any suggestions...?

You must have lost connection on the last section, Open up the app again and select option 3. Try the USB ports in the back of the computer, if you are using a laptop you may have trouble with connection.. if you see any error device not found or when it says testing for connection if you dont see a serial number means its a driver or connection problem(obviously) if you continue to have problems let me know and i will work with you

Nope...not using a laptop...but I do have one. I made sure the virus was off, disabled the firewall....connection seems ok....all the files seem to get transfered...but when I try to do the final root, the img (MDK9k) file does not complete. As I said...I was able to just copy the original 501 image over to my sd card, and recover from there...but for some reason, it will not take it to the internal memory/storage. I am now downloading the full sdk of java to make sure I have not missed anything...I really have no idea why. btw...I even but all the apps and programs and files in my c:root. The serial # always shows up when it is asked for to confirm to next step.

would you mind screen sharing with me?

I would do it if I knew what you were talking about. Are you suggesting a remote connection to my computer or "sharing on the thunderbolt". I am new to the thunderbolt so I have no idea how to do that.

BTW...I was doing some more reading...and found that I needed?? to download java in both the 32 and 64 bit versions just so I could install sdk for the android. Don't even know if I need all that stuff. Let me know what you what or how you want to attempt it. I did take some pics with a camera of the screens and the error. the mdm9k file (image file) seems to be the issue. But I am wide open to any help you can provide. I am running win7 64bit on a system I built myself.

I should have ALL the files and programs necessary to root the phone on my system, so if you want to remote connect and do the manual process, I would be happy to accommodate you. I generally use teamviewer when I help someone...if you can believe that.

the replacement adb files i put in post one is all you need from the sdk.....screen sharing it i will have remote access to your computer.

i cant imagine why you are getting an mdm9k error, either the RUU you are using is corrupted, the file didnt completely write to the sdcard or your sdcard is corrupted.....or you are missing the misc image which allows the downgrad to happen, i will pm you on how to screen share

[WARN]Tonight i will be working on the most upto date version , it will be a little more reliable and will be a tad faster as i will reduce a couple steps. So if you have not Rooted please hold off for another day. Thanks for your patience.

Credit to jcase this is modeled after his method

After finishing rooting/installing a rom.. Am I allowed to delete the "PG05IMG.zip" and "BAMF-Remix-v1.5.zip" files from my SDcard root directory?

Thank so much DroidXcon. That went great for me (missed your above post by a few min. - D'oh!) I had that same "S-off but programs acted like they had no root access" problem., but I switched USB ports, re-ran step 3, and am golden - with one exception that is not your fault.

FYI to anyone else who may have just rooted - Titanium Backup appears to have hit snag. It has SU, but FC's before it even opens (can't even do the "problems" button - if FC's immediately. Checked on the market, and tons of reviewers are saying the since an update, all it does is FC. Seems fickle, but seems like a recent problem. Hope they fix it soon.

I mostly posted to thank you, but also to let others know that I assumed it was a problem with my root, since it was the first thing I D/L'd, and I was banging my head until I decided just to give ROM mgr a try.

EDIT: I may be way off - It's like I'm half rooted. S-off, wifi hotspot, yes, ROM mgr yes, but "fix permissions" no - Titanium - has SU permission but only FCs (see above) Some thing is up, and I have reached the end of my limited knowledge.

EDIT # 2: Victory is mine! - I can't say why, but seems I had a busybox problem - I think it did not install I manually downloaded it from the market, and seemed that all was fixed. Then, this morning, the dev. fixed Titanium with an update, and BOOM - works perfectly. The irony is, I think, that had TiBack not had an FC problem, it would have installed/updated busybox with the"problems" button, and I likely would not have even known (or cared) that my busybox was effed when i finished rooting.

Thanks.

hi Droidxcon...can i flash the new RUU over your after rooting using your method of course? I am not gonna flash any ROM just the new RUU. Please let me know as soon as u can.

NOTE: the new update that u are working on is this also applicable to those who are rooted already?

THANKS!

Pardon the N00B, please. I've waited long enough and am gonna try to root my Thunderbolt. I'm an old time computer power user, but a N00B as far as Android goes. I like the root procedure described here. However, I AM warned that it erases data. Fine, and THANKS for the heads up!

I presume that means installed apps, phone numbers/contacts/messages/files like movies & pix? If so, is there a way to back up or offload contact info, etc and reload after unbloating? I'd like to back up before I jump into this pool.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Use MyBackup Pro... in the market. It will backup all your settings, messages, apps, pretty much everything on the phone. Don't worry about the contents of the SD Card... that will not be erased.

Yes you can. You need to flash from HBOOT/Bootloader. Power off your phone. Power it back on while holding the volume down rocker at the same time. This is the download for the new radio: Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites! place it on the root of your SD Card and boot into hboot.

[WARN]Sorry everyone, i fell asleep testing it, i was testing till at least 8:30am... ill zip this up and get it out asap[/WARN]

Ahhhh, cool. You're gonna update the Auto Root method soon, just waiting to zip and upload?

I shall wait for that then.
