For those not following this but the Google support forum is getting very long on the random restart and reboot thread.

Suggest you read it before buying. If you buy try to replicate or test for the gps, multi touch or restart issues.

Many of us are awaiting a response from Google on the restart issue other than Paul telling us how to submit a bug report.

The link is as follows:

If you don't have this issue you are fortunate. I love this tablet and want a good one or a software patch. My seller has ordered me a replacement as I have till Friday on my 30 day exchange.

This may be a long shot, but since deleting the data and clearing the Google play services cache I have not experienced anymore reboots when before I was averaging around two a day. I was trying to do the force OTA trick (hoping the update would resolve reboot issues) which is how I found this out. Also of note, the trick didn't work so I can confirm that I went a few days without a seeing restart of any kind on the 4.3 out of the box and the ensuing update I finally got a few days later. Hope this helps.

I had 2 random reboots and 2 soft bricks that required factory resets within the first few days of ownership. since the last factory reset and updates, haven't had a single issue for over a month. I think it's either an issue with out-of-the-box software settings or an update took care of it, either way one of the two will definitely solve all your problems.

Thanks Joe but I've done multiple factory resets and updates have all been loaded. Still have the issue so am likely one of the unlucky ones that has something else going on.

Still planning on exchanging it.

Mine had this issue CONSTANTLY and it wouldn't stop. Tried deleting apps too and it wouldn't cooperate and would shut down. I did a factory wipe from the settings and it works perfectly now.

The only gripe is now I have the multi touch issue that I didn't experience before.

Rather that than the random reboots they were unbearable trying to read textbooks for class!

Grrr, just started having this problem 2 days ago. I used to have the multitouch issue then the latest update mostly fixed that but now I've got the restart issue. I think I'm done with Asus devices for good.

Did not have this issue until last couple of days, suddenly noted two sudden reboots in last two days. I did not install or uninstall any apps in last two days, so not sure what transpired.

Very important to submit bug reports and/or call Google support. It's the only way Google will know to (perhaps) fix this annoying bug.

Yes still submitting bug reports. One from Friday and one from tonight.

Google has lost a faithful customer.

After a long absence, this problem popped up three times this past weekend. Bad enough to be annoying, but not bad enough for immediate replacement (for the moment).

Unless you've purchased from GooglePlay (or still within your vendors return/exchange window), or unless Google sees this as an Android problem (right now they do not!), you'll need to go to Asus for repair/exchange. (They claim not to have heard about this). Contact them at 800-877-1497. They'll provide an RMA and shipping tag.

I think I may have solved mine. One night last week, I got 5 restarts in about an hour. Very consistent behavior, it happened about 5-10 seconds after putting it to sleep. So I booted up in safe mode, removed some recently installed apps and let it sit for about 30 minutes. No restarts at all. So I booted back up into normal mode and haven't had a restart in 4 days (to my knowledge at least). I honestly think mine was caused by a recent update to the Chrome beta.

Not sure what "booting in safe mode" means, and how it may have solved the problem? Were the apps the cause?

Please elaborate. Thanks

Anyone w/ a recent one (built in September according the the serial#) have this issue?
I returned the one I bought when it was first released because of this...drove me nuts more than the other reported issues (never saw the multitouch or GPS issue)...

no worries... Google will release 4.4 soon for Nexus 7. After that, no more random reboots..... ;) (wishful thinking....)

a factory reset then updating all at once did the trick for me. random rebooted on me twice during first few days of owning. even got soft bricked. with the current updates, it's fixed. but unless you do a factory reset, the updates don't get applied correctly in some way and the bug still persists. so you've gotta factory reset then update. the out of the box version seems to be the problem. even though the factory reset puts you back to the default out of the box version, there's something that happens to that version after using it for a while or using certain apps or something, that causes it to have reboot issues. but if you factory reset them update you should be fine.

Glad to hear about your solution. Hope it continues to work for you (us).
You emphasize "update all at once", but not quite sure what this means. Could you lay it out step-by step. Thanks much.

I'll start:
1. Copy all important data(music files, passwords, photos, etc). Use "Backup my data"; "Backup my account" for this, or do this manually ?
2. Reset N7 to factory options using Settings > Factory Reset > Factory Data Reset
3. What next?
