Bad News For The M9

I get that the camera is a disappointment, especially compared to the claims HTC made prior to showing it off. (which is always a bad decision) However, the amount of crap HTC is taking is ridiculous. Samsung has made equally horrible choices with their S6 series and are facing nowhere near the level of scrutiny. I guess advertising $$$$ talks.

Advertising has nothing to do with Samsung being praised while HTC is getting bashed. HTC's head grew too big after receiving awards for the M7 and M8. Call it a complexion if you will.

Point 1: M7 complaint was the camera in 2013.
Point 2: M8 complaint was the camera in 2014.
Point 3. HTC had two years of people complaining about their camera. And what does HTC do? Slap the biggest camera possible on their phone and say, "I hope you customers are happy now!." HTC wanted us to "Look and stare at the M9." We all stared because its the same phone from last year.
Point 4: I was hoping for a design change from the M7 going to the M8. So I was not too happy last year. This year everyone is expecting something new and we got stale bread. Not to mention HTC running like hell to get off the stage because they rewrapped a gift from last year for all of us.

1. At the time the camera was close enough on par that it wasn't a problem. It's not a bad camera, although it could have used a bump to 6MP.
2. Yes, the camera was severely lagging by 2014.
3. I agree, the camera isn't necessarily good. I think it's utterly stupid to put a 20MP camera in a phone. It's ludicrous. That being said, I do think most everything else about the phone is top notch.
4. Why change the design? It's beautiful, functional and solid as a rock. It's like a Porsche design...why fix it when it's already the most beautiful phone out there?

As a company you want to increase market share, profits, and make your customers come back for more every year like Apple. The last review I read about the M9 basically said if you already have the M8, no need in purchasing the M9. Another reviewer had the M8 sitting in front of his camera then swapped it to the M9 and said you couldn't tell the difference could you? I found that antic very funny. How is HTC supposed to increase their market share and profits if reviewers are telling customers who purchased the M8 not to upgrade their phones? HTC can't afford to have their profits drop this year or a lackluster customer response to purchasing the M9.

I have to agree and iv only owned HTC phones. they played it safe and i'm not to happy. if the camera stinks as iv heard i'm prolly off to another brand phone.where is the m9+?? HTC really blew it here-

where do i go- who knows. ill wait i guess to reviews pop up!
problem is my wife has the s5 and it blows compared to the m8... maybe note 4 for its size.

I watched the live feed. I didn't see them running off the stage. They all stayed with the new products for people to get a closer look.

S6 without expandable memory? No thanks. Too much bloat in touch wiz.

TW and bloat has been scaled back a bit - at least that's what was conveyed.

The HTC presentation was not as detailed as Samsung's. They didn't tell anyone why we need their phone or what it can do. Then they ran off stage. Oh, the phone is beautiful like last year so buy it? WTF

Lets look at it this way...If they had dropped the EvaLeaks version of the phone...how many people would be so upset about the camera. The crappy camera would not be "as" complained about because a newly framed phone surrounded it.

Essentially the same cabinet with some fancier guts. They didn't stretch. They didn't gamble. The really didn't do anything. So its a two tone case...WHOOOPIE! HTC certainly does NOT know their customers and unloaded this "version" and expected it to fly. I have a distinct feeling its going to cost them a lot.

That monotone unenthusiastic presenter that HTC had was representative of the phone, not exciting and a complete disappointment. They had to come out big with Samsung going so big and instead rested on what they had yesterday. Samsung listened to their consumers and HTC brushed em off. Really sad by HTC.

Extremely valid point! I hope they read your post. They could have pulled the old smoke and mirrors on us and we probably would have gone for it based on looks alone. So true...

I think everyone is a little premature bashing the camera. As far as looking the same I love the looks of the m8 and for me it's the perfect size. The relocation of the power button and upgraded internals/software are a big + I'll definitely be picking one up. They essentially fixed everything that bugged me on the m8.

They didn't fix anything. Reviewers keep complaining about the placement of the volume keys and power button. They are not in logical spots. Not to mention I've read more than twice that new lip around the edge of the phone makes it uncomfortable to hold.

Ever use a cell phone holder while navigating? How in the hell will that thing fit in the holder on the dashboard without turning the phone off? Unless you place the phone in the holder toward the bottom/base of the phone.

Who was complaining about the power button? The M8 had tap/swipe to unlock/wake. Totally negates reaching for the power button. Secondly, there is an app called Screen Off & Lock that you can use to turn the M8 off. Put the little icon on your main screen and in your notification area. Simply turn the phone off by touching the icon in either location. Never have to worry about a power button receiving too much use. I've used that app on all of my phones. Power button is only used to restart the phone.

Software....mmmmmkaaaay. The M8 will receive Sense 7. And for right now, the camera on the M8 is better than the M9. How will anyone tell the difference between the M9 and M8 after both phones are running the exact same software?

I'm not sure they ran off, but I do think they didn't spend enough time discussing any features of the phone itself. Their marketing rep has tweeted out messages that instead of OIS, they went with electronic image stabilization to save space. That is one example of something that I think could have been talked about. I thought they instead took too much time discussing their process for making the metal look the way it does. Personally, I don't really care that they created some way to make the metal look like it does, that isn't something that is going to make my phone work better.

Round camera versus square camera. :)

Wow. That is the dumbest argument against not upgrading a phone. It's a rectangular slab of metal/aluminum/plastic/etc. That's like saying "I'm not upgrading cars this year because Honda kept the radio the same." 0.o

Your blind fanboyism is making you look totally stupid.

I assume you are calling the reviewer of those articles fanboy's?

I have an 2007 Tundra that looks amazing. I thought the 2015 Tundras look sweet. I really wanted a sunroof and automatic adjusting heat/AC. My Honda has those features and I love it. I looked at photos of the 2015 Tundra online and they do not have automatic heat/AC. It's manually controlled only like my 2007. I said no new truck for me. So yes, people won't buy a new $30K vehicle if it has something you don't want in it like a phone.
