Bad Wi-Fi Range

we need to get the higher tiered tech support numbers.

the first tier always says crap like "hard reset" bla bla

I'm on my 2nd Evo and still have the same issues with wifi. I plan on waiting another week or so to see if they have any fix. If not I will return the phone before my 30 days.

My WiFi has been great. I get a full signal while next to my router in my office but even out in the back porch, back yard, garage, and out to my mail box at the end of the drive way I get pretty solid and strong signals.. While in my office I am getting 5.39 Mbps download speeds, in my living room it reads 4.17 and in my back yard or out in my driveway it's been roughly 3.46 and 3.22 so it holds up pretty good (at least on my phone) My internet is with AT&T's Uverse so my router is an AT&T branded 3800HGV-8 model number saying it's made by 2Wire..... Tested it out in a Hotel this past week but even on my laptop I got a very weak signal and the signal from the phone was pretty weak as well... Still managed roughly 2 Mbps download on a very weak signal and the same speeds showed up on my laptop (Using Speedtest.net)

HTC forum feedback left. Radio Shack actually placed and order for me to swap mine out. hope it does the trick but I am doubtful

My WiFi has been great........(Using speedtest.net)

Speedtest.net does not directly measuring either (1) connection speed or (2) actual file transfer speeds.....Speedtest.net is "limited" by your internet speed connection which is typically less than a 1/2 and order of magnitude than the maximum wifi g speed of 54Mbps............in your case, 3 - 5Mbps. To test your real, potential wifi speed, as compared to other phones, or your laptop, you would need to use a "file" transfer test, not an broadband internet test.

Let me put it this way, if you can think of the WiFi as a river (the connection speed), you can't test it's carrying capacity w/ a garden hose (the internet).

That's true, but couldn't run a speedtest on a comparable device and compare the two? It would show if his speed was degraded on the Evo.

Speeds were similar between my laptop and EVO on the same connection... I know the Speeds are based on the network or WiFi connection your hooked on to. What I was trying to state is my speeds are pretty good even when far away from the router and on a "Weaker" WiFi signal and didn't drop off dramatically when outside or in another room from the router....

I got victor too, they seem to be dancing around the issue though.

If they were tapdancing they'd say something along the lines that they are investigating the claim.

They acknowledged the issue and are working on it. The phone has only been out a week; give them a little time.

They told me they are investigating it as well. I just want a status report to calm my fears.

You guys are wasting your time. It will be months before this issue is even looked at and resolved. Right now, they're massively increasing their production line to meet the demand as they're sold out everywhere. They don't even have time to worry about changing anything.

The sell out thing just depends on where you live..... In my area (Nashvile, TN) I was physically at a Sprint Store today because my wife had to have a new phone since I got my EVO and she was getting a Crackberry (She wouldn't be able to handle Android and she hates touch screen phones) and while waiting to move all her information from her Blackberry to the new one I watched them sell 7 EVO's..... Both Walmarts where I live had 5 of them on the shelf... Now Best Buy and Radio Shack both say their sold out and have signs telling you to preorder or get on their list if you want one but if you look hard enough you can find one...

In post #250, above I posted results for close to the wireless access point. This afternoon, I checked from 1 floor above, and at the opposite end of the house. The indicator varied between just the dot and 1 bar. But I still got about 4,000 kbps. My phone seems to be okay.

My EVO Wifi is ok when I'm not holding it, terrible when I am

I just realized last night that my EVO Wifi reception is good when I'm not holding it (>8Mbps) and terrible when I am (usually <.7Mbps), unless I am standing close to the router.

It doesn't seem to matter how I hold it. But laying it down vs. holding it makes a huge difference.

Holding or not holding doesn't affect the bars shown, BTW. It's pretty much always at one bar once I move from the room with the router.

This makes me feel slightly better, but I'm pretty sure this isn't supposed to happen, and there are times I would like to be holding my phone while using it with Wifi.

Yes like I said earlier in this thread the antenna is in the bottom and the hand blocks the signal. HTC seems to have very sensitive antennas for some reason.

asked earlier without getting an answer but i'm curious if HTC/Sprint later finds out that the wifi issue is hardware related, will they replace the phone within our 1 year OEM warranty? I don't plan on getting the TEP.

I'm pretty sure they're requiring everyone to get TEP, but if this /is/ a manufacturer's defect, they have to repair / replace.

what's this "requiring everyone to get TEP" business you're talking about...?

That's just what I've heard... I already had it so it never came up... Of course, the $10.00 premium data charge never came up either so my store may just suck... LOL
