Bad Wi-Fi Range

Same **** happens to me and i have a really nice, expensive, extended range router! Like seriously WTF!?

wow.. I get great signal strength in my office (Next to the Router) in the living room, bed rooms, far end of my back yard or even down my drive way at the mail box....

There must be a few bad seeds out there...

Or, there must be a few good ones...

Mine is not good either.

Try holding it vs. not holding it. I'd suggest speedtest primarily and also wifi analyzer to see if the signal drops when you hold it vs. not.

Mine is definitely much slower/lower signal when held, at least in locations not very close to the router. Wondering if I should exchange or not bother, if they're all like that

I was in Ireland this week. Obviously, the CDMA phone won't work there, but I took the phone anyway. I figured it would be useful for geotagging photos and checking email/web at hotspots.

Sitting the hotel lobby, I could not get a strong enough signal with the phone to connect. My laptop had a 'good' signal and connected without issue, as did my coworker's iphone. I looked like an idiot walking around the lobby trying to find some place close enough to the router to connect.

Back in the room, I tried setting up an ad-hoc access point using internet connection sharing on my Laptop. The phone wouldn't see that at all.

At home, I have similar issues. I can't pick up the router at all in my home office which is 3 (small and relatively open) rooms away from the router, even through every other device I have connects there with no problems. In the same room as the router, the signal is strong and fast, but it drops dramatically as the distance increases.

This problem actually caused me to return the phone and take advantage of the 30-day try-out period. I liked the phone and android, and am hopeful they can eventually get this issue resolved - but I can't risk being stuck with a phone that doesn't work the way I expect it to.

At least from other forums I have read HTC is working on a software fix for the Wi-Fi. Claiming it's a firmware issue and not a hardware issue. So we will see..

Someone on the HTC forum said that a hard reset fixed the issue for him (specifically, fixed the problem I am having which is that wifi speed plummets in some areas holding the phone vs. not holding it)?

Anyone else had the hard reset fix this (or not)? I hate to wipe all the data I've accumulated on my phone to date for nothing. Perhaps there is a way to back it up first?

EDI/UPDATE: I just called HTC tech support. The woman who answered was totally unhelpful as all she would say is that if the wifi connected and worked then there was nothing else she could do for me. I asked to speak with someone else. I got a supervisor named Jordan who explained to me that they are aware of an issue with the wifi when you're holding the phone, and that HTC was working on it. He mentioned something about "trending" in there which I think was a reference to complaints on this trending up.

If HTC doesn't have a fix in a week (unlikely), I'll probably swap my EVO with Sprint and hope I have better luck the second time. I'm not 100% clear that all the EVO's don't have this issue though; some folks are claiming their phones are fine but everyone has different routers and conditions in their house.

I had no luck with a hard reset. Also I exchanged my phone and there is little difference with the new phone although the signal seems ever so slightly better. When the firmware fix comes for the signal reporting will it help at all with the issue of not being able to connect from a certain distance?

My Evo is giving me as good of wifi performance at home as any of my other mobile devices (laptop, ipad).

I did do the speedtest holding it vs. leaving it on the desk and noticed some differing results. In hand gave me about 3.5-4 megs while on the desk gave me 4.5-6.5. Note: My speed tops out at 7.

Just got my EVO on Saturday and tried connecting to my wifi at home. My network shows up in the scan, but when I try to connect, all it says in “Obtaining IP address” and never connects. The signal strength is around 60-70% (even though I’m within 3 feet of the thing). My Blackberry never had a problem and my laptop doesn’t. I wonder if it’s a router issue or HTC. My sister has the HTC Eris and she has the same problem.

I had the same issue yesterday. Most of the time it is because your network does not let your EVO IP address to connect. Just restart your network and it should work. I don't think this is due to the weak wifi signal.

I just restarted my network Friday so i didn't think that was the issue but i was able to connect at work no problem. I'll have to try that when i get home. Thanks!

well in my home network where my iphone has coverage around any part of my 3000sf house, the evo connects but has almost zero throughput. its using the G channel of my dual router with wpa2. Now I went to Panera last night, hooked up to their open network...............and voila, screaming fast wifi. What gives?????

Does anyone know if this will benefit us Wireless G users?
Ive yet to get a wireless N router, and i'd love to try this hack out before an official release (although i would love to just wait for something official)

WiFi is fast and stable, however; I have two EVO's and one D-INC and can verify that the range of the receiver on the EVO is drastically less than on the D-INC. Even compared to other devices, the EVO range blowz...
