Bad Wi-Fi Range

@Super Noob, nice widget I like that! And actually after I posted it did occur to me that all I had to do was just jump to the home screen with the Sense wifi widget and flip it on/off and it would have been quicker.

So here's the funny thing; today I've been in and out of my house, walking the dog, going to the store, etc., and every time I've come back the EVO has automatically reconnected to my WiFi network with no issues. I had been travelling earlier in the week and I had a couple of hotel hot spots saved; I noticed they were there during my post yesterday and deleted them since I probably won't be going back where I was anytime soon. This put my home network at the top of the "saved" networks; I wonder if that is making a difference on the reconnecting. Anyway its working perfectly today.

Update: After restarting the phone on day 2 the signal seems to be better (no idea why). Another thing I did was download the Wifi Analyzer and found three other local networks running on channel 6, so I manually set my DIR-655 to broadcast on 11 and I'm getting 9-16Mbps down nearly all over my house.

What is even more strange is it says I'm between -60/-70dbm and I see only 1bar but I can still get upwards near 10Mbps even in the worst spots in my home.

I'm a little surprised by how many people are saying their wifi has dramatically improved. Mine is no better than before the update in terms of range. I can be sitting 10 ft from my router and the signal continually drops.

I can get 1 signal from 50 ft from the router and speed is still really fast. 6mbps for 3 bars and 4.5 mbps for 1bar.

Can't get internet from access point

I have poor wifi reception, too, but it is decent enough to get by. I have a different issue though. I have a wifi router, wireless N, that I can connect to no problem. It is an Airlink running WEP encryption. I have another wireless router, a Trendnet, that I am using in a different part of the house as a wireless access point. It is connected to the internet by an ethernet cable that runs back to the first router. It has a static address and runs WPA encryption. You connect to it, and the first router assigns an address.

That setup has worked fine for me for months. I have no problem connecting laptops, or my Palm Pre to the access point.

My EVO connects to the first router no problem. If I use DHCP, it cannot connect to the access point at all, it tries to connect, but cannot get an address. If I assign the EVO a static address, it connects to the access point, but it does not have internet access. When I try to browse I get nothing.

I have tried changing the encryption to WEP, no luck. I tried a different router, a Belkin, as the access point. It still doesn't work. My Pre and laptops work fine with the Belkin. I have messed with all the possible settings on the EVO. I changed the name of the access point, in case that helped. Nada.

I saw one thread on this in another forum where the problem was solved by making the access point one word, not two. I only have a one word name for my access point, so that is not an issue.

Any of you wifi gurus on this thread have any ideas?

I don't have issue with signal strength but wifi doens't work hardly or it's slower than 3g. Anyone else have this issue?

Well, reading post on this thread I though one thing- Even with poor signal we have some WIFI, poor guys with Droid X had good reception, but no connection...

I hope they figure this out soon... i don't even turn on my wifi anymore, I'm now the butt of jokes of iphone4 owners at work... I'm so frustrated that I wouldn't mind holding my phone a certain way to get it to work!.... We got 2 Evo's here at home having the same issue....

Got my Evo about a week ago. It is great except for Wi-Fi problems. When I get connected the speed is usually 10Mbps or better but then it just looses the connection for a while before getting it back on it's own. It also connected to wireless N with my D-Link DIR 655. Just to see if my router had anything to do with the problems I bought a Netgear WNDR 3700 and the speed increased a little but my Evo still drops the connection at times and now it only connects on wireless G.

I called HTC and they acknowledged the problem and said an update was coming but would not commit to when.

My WiFi works absolutely great. Despite my signal strength bars seemingly showing weaker than is expect....I always connect and its super zippy. Lucky me I s'pose.

Haven't read the entire thread so please tell me if anyone else has this problem:

I'm sitting about 10 feet from my wifi router and my Evo tells me that it remembers my ssid but it's out of range because the ssid isn't being broadcasts. If I broadcast it, the Evo picks it up. What gives? All my other wifi items pick up the signal once they are accepted by the router even if it isn't broadcasting the ssid.

I hope froyo (when its finally available) helps as my wifi is very wonky! if Im standing right beside my router I get great speed but if Im a few rooms away my signal is horrible and often the signal falls off completely

i guess m not the only one facing this problem....
one room away from the router n Wi-Fi loose its range....:-(

You are definitely not the only one experiencing this problem. I have all sorts of drop-outs on my EVO. I'm about ready to kick this device to the curb until all of the kinks get worked out. I have a Cisco 802.11n AP1142N and have a couple of dozen devices connected to it at various times. The EVO is the ONLY one that has throughput and Wi-Fi signal strength issues. Come on HTC...admit the problem and fix it!

I'll add to this one. First of all, unless I'm in the same room I can't get a reliable connection and if I'm 2 rooms away it's completely dead. Even in the same room as the router I need to be 10 feet away to get a very fast connection. I don't have these problems with any other devices I use.

When I first bought this phone I was excited that I would have fast wi-fi and didn't worry about how good 3g (or 4g) would be at home. It turns out that I don't even turn wi-fi on at home. This would be a complete deal breaker for me but it turns out I actually get good 3g at home so I'm good. But they need to fix this if they can.

Not to dampen the mood, but I see no wifi improvement with Froyo. I still lose my signal by walking out onto my front porch. My laptop connects just fine from the same location. The Evo has been like this from day 1 for me, regardless of software version.

froyo improved my wifi signal in that is shows more bars performs better at times, but its still flakey at best
