Bad Wi-Fi Range

Add another one to the list...
Range is horrid... getting zero to one bar, while all other devices (computer/laptop/palm pre) get full or near full

Me too

I just got my Evo this week and am disappointed in the poor WiFi performance - and no, I'm not talking about being upset because I only see one bar, but I actually see poor performance (dropping the WiFi signal all together) and poor throughput compared to other WiFi devices sitting right next to me. I've also been plagued with poor battery life (is it normal to lose 50% of your battery overnight when everything (GPS, WiFi, etc.) is off but the cell signal?).

And BTW, I just noticed on Boy Genius Reports that supposedly Sprint is pushing out a software maintenance update (6/28) that will address this WiFi issue. Keeping my fingers crossed.

EVO 4G to get a software update on June 28th? ? Boy Genius Report

I never really had any issues with wifi signal. It loses signal at the exact some distance away from my router as my old Palm Pre did. But the way it reports the signal strength seems strangely inconsistent. I can't really tell if the overall reporting is better after the update. But I definitely don't have to be as close to the router to get a full signal reporting now.

The screen sensitivity/grounding issue has definitely been eliminated!

Not sure if I would say "greatly", but I did see 3 bars occasionaly at work this morning for the first time.

did'nt do much.

I'm seeing hints of a minor improvement, but certainly nowhere near what I was hoping for. Still very poor reception compared to every other wireless device I own. Definitely keeping my support case open with HTC until there is a significant improvement.

I measured dbm with WiFi Analyzer app before/after update from same spot. Was -60dbm before the update. Improved to -40dbm at same spot after upgrade.

After the update, the EVO can stay connected in areas I used to have disconnect troubles. Still not as strong as signal as some other devices I own, but it is very usable. Time to sell my Pre.

After I updated my EVO it's connecting via a wireless N connection. Is anyone elses?

FIXED with update on June 28, 2010. This thread should probably be closed now.

I wouldn't call it closed just yet. This update may solve some people's problems, but I still believe there are some devices out there that have hardware defects.

Yesterday my roommate got the EVO and when I tested them side by side his had substantially better range than did mine (got mine on launch day). He didn't have the update yesterday when I tested it so it definitely wasn't that. When I get home from work today I will test the performance with the update to see whether any performance gains have been made, But I doubt that it will completely solve my problem because at this point I am pretty sure that I have some kind of hardware defect (for me i have poor bluetooth and wifi range).

Is your signal meter still working with the WiFi Analyzer app? Mine was working before the upgrade... I can see the signal strength on the other view options, but not the signal meter view.

It should say fixed for some... On mine how it was 1 bar in the same spot - still one bar in the same spot... (with -74 db according to scanner)

My wifi is slightly better...my wife's pre is still better....also WIFI Analyzer works for me after Update including signal strentgh meter.

I have to say my WiFi improved a little after the update but it's still not as good as my Pre..heck it's not quite as good as my ipod touch which doesn't have the best WiFi reception either...

my ipod touch and my Evo sitting side by side sitting about 10 feet from the router (netgear RangeMax WNR3500L Wireless N - great router)

Touch: 36db
Evo: 50db

anyone know how to check the signal strength on a Pre that's not active on an account?(as in don't have to download any software? ..though i suppose if there is something in WOSQuickinstall...)

i know my Pre would pick up a weak signal much better than my ipod touch.

an example of that is where i work i know there are 5 wireless networks on the street my store is on, inside my store my Pre can see 4 of them, my ipod touch and Evo only see 2 (one including my own network at work)
