Bad Wi-Fi Range

I have to say my WiFi improved a little after the update but it's still not as good as my Pre..heck it's not quite as good as my ipod touch which doesn't have the best WiFi reception either...

my ipod touch and my Evo sitting side by side sitting about 10 feet from the router (netgear RangeMax WNR3500L Wireless N - great router)

Touch: 36db
Evo: 50db

anyone know how to check the signal strength on a Pre that's not active on an account?(as in don't have to download any software? ..though i suppose if there is something in WOSQuickinstall...)

i know my Pre would pick up a weak signal much better than my ipod touch.

an example of that is where i work i know there are 5 wireless networks on the street my store is on, inside my store my Pre can see 4 of them, my ipod touch and Evo only see 2 (one including my own network at work)

the more I look at Pre the more I think it is not bad for an old device..., WIFI is ok, Battery in low signal area live longer...

It is seams to me that most people who benefited from the update were using n-band routers. People using old a/g bandsdid not see anything much. Am I correct?

It's better with my b/g router, but still slower than 4G. But before it was unusable with d/l speeds well under 1 Mbps if it didn't just drop signal altogether. But now I can get 2.0 - 3.5 Mbps down albeit inconsistently, while my 4G is anywhere from 4.0 - 8.0 Mbps.

So it seems the update added "one bar," but nothing earth shattering when compared to similar devices.

I did the update on Sunday the 21 MB update and now I'll leave my wifi on and leave the house and come back it wont connect or say it isnt in range and I have to reset my phone and then it will connect to my router. I'm thinking of reflashing my phone and then installing the 30 mb update and see if that resolves it.

I'm getting good results with an old 2-year old Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 Ghz router.

I used the Speedtest.net android app and Wifi Manager and below are the download and upload speeds:

3G over the air, no wifi:
DL: 191Kbps, UL: 451 Kbps

Wifi, 24 inches from router:
4 bars on Wifi Manager
DL: 4,882Kbps, UL: 720 Kbps

Wifi, 40 feet from router, 2 walls between rooms:
3 bars on Wifi Manager
DL: 4,888Kbps, UL: 715Kbps

Even though I lost 1 bar, that didn't affect the download and upload speeds.

You have nice evo, mine would have a dot for a bar at 40 feet.

Well, My roommate just got a EVO and it turns out that his gets a much strong signal than mine does. I ran a bunch of tests with them side by side and his consistently got a 20dB higher signal. Thats good enough for me, I took my EVO to the sprint store today and I'm now in line for a New EVO (just made the 30 day window).

I waited as long as possible because I wanted to give HTC time to fix any manufacturing Quality issues so that hopefully this next one doesn't also have problems. I will see.

I need some advice. My wifi reception is still piss-poor, to be frank. My house is not that big, a standard one-story (2,007 square feet in size). I have a Linksys WRT54G router running the DD-WRT firmware, and I've even boosted the TX power of the router's radio to 84mW. The router is in a centrally-located bedroom that we use as a study. From the living room, EVERY SINGLE ONE of my other wifi-equipped device get an excellent signal strength. This includes a laptop, a cheap netbook, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, and any of my friends' wifi-capable phones (iphones, blackberries, etc). With my Evo, it fluctuates between 0 and 1 bars, and routinely I get interrupted downloads or page-load errors due to a temporary lack of connection. The story is the same at work. My office is around the corner from an access point, and laptops, phones, etc all get a good or excellent connection, while my Evo shows the network completely out of range. Although I'm in a suburb of Houston and I get 4G when I'm out and about, I can't pull a reliable 4G signal from within my house or at work. So, I'm basically stuck using 3G only the vast majority of the time on this state-of-the-art Wifi and 4G equipped device. It's fairly upsetting that the wifi is almost completely unusable for me.

Can I get some honest evaluations from other Evo users as to whether you think the extent of my wifi issues are something unique to my handset or if I am just being overly sensitive to the poor connection issues that everyone is having.

I really got fed up last night when I realized I was setting up a freaking WDS wireless mesh network in my house just so that I can use my Evo in the living room.

Just got my EVO, the OTA update and not good news

Hey everyone, new WebOS -> Android convert here and I wanted to give you some test results from today's experiment using my iPod Touch 3G and a DIR-655 Wireless N Router.

I took my iPod and EVO around the house and the difference was saddening. I will note that my iPod Touch 3G got between 16-18Mbps DOWN/3.6-5Mbps UP anywhere in the home with full strength signal using the same Speedtest App for Android and IOS4. Also I should note our wireless G/Acer gets faster DL/UL speeds than my EVO with full strength except our living room (4/5 bars).

Here are some tests with the EVO:

1. Office w/router - Full Strength up to 6ft / 10.1Mbps Down / 4.2Mbps Up
2. Upstairs Bathroom 20ft away - 3 bars / 4.5 / 3.6
3. Downstairs Living Room(furthest away): 1 bar / 3.6 / 3.4
4. Den(below Office) 2 bars / 3.4 / 3

So yeah that is pretty horrible by comparison and odd that my DL speeds went down dramatically while my UL speeds didn't vary much. Also as I noted I tested the iPod in the same location and stuck between 16-18Mbps/Full Strength.

Overall I love the device but I can't say part of me isn't greatly disappointed. I'm mid-contract and I don't want to leave Sprint anyway (free Airave without mo/fees and huge employee discount) so I shall love it for what it is and pray for a miracle update. Until then I can just use my IPT as my mobile browser at home.

No.

I've experienced a significant improvement with my wifi speed with my g router.

HTC EVO 4G Wi-Fi Fix like iphone4?

So, it seems that the iphone4 Wi-Fi reception issue is getting a fix via a software update. Any chance that the same type of fix will come to the HTC EVO 4G? Wi-Fi reception is still appalling even after the latest OTA.

EVO not reconnecting to WiFi network after OTA update

So since the latest OTA update (I was able to install the first version of it when it was released on Monday) my Evo now doesn't reconnect to my WiFi network when I get home. It used to automatically reconnect whenever in range. Worse, if I'm at home and I don't use the phone for a while, it now disconnects from the WiFi network, which means all the push email is coming over the 3G radio.

I have a feeling this has to do with the attempted battery/power saving "fixes" that have been implemented (i.e. putting WiFi to sleep when not being used), however it is truely annoying to pick up the phone and start using it and then ralize it is no longer connected to the WiFi network. The only way to get it to reconnect is to go to Settings\Wireless & networks\Wi-Fi settings and then let it sit there while it "discovers" the network is in range.

So far this patch has been pretty useless for me (broke unrevoked, won't stay connected to WiFi, battery life the same - but then I didn't really have any battery issues to begin with).

OTA did speed up WiFi a bit

Actually the OTA did speed up my WiFi connection by a decent amount. Using SpeedTest, I was getting a little over 6000 kbps down and over 1000 kbps up; now SpeedTest is reporting between 8300/9300 kbps down (depending on which floor I'm on) and a solid 3000+ kbps up.

Let me know if that works, I'm having the same issues on my Evo with reconnecting.

Thanks

Same thing for me, very disappointing.

Sounds like you've had bad luck with it, I can't complain about my wifi. I also have the wifi-toggle widget on one of the screens so it takes every bit of 2 seconds to flip over to that screen, and turn it on. It also takes about 5 seconds for the wifi to get connected, so all in all it takes about 7 seconds to get wifi on.

I also am using the Wifi Manager widget shown below:

and there is more info here: My software ? Kostya Vasilyev's software blog

Actually I just timed it, and it took a whopping 8 seconds for Wifi Manager to display "connected", so it's not that big a deal to me (personally).
