Bad wifi performance

My Maxx seems to not work well with wifi. I've noticed in the past that when I have connected to open networks I get strong signal, but everything is painfully slow. Last week I broke down and got home broadband again.
Been using my phone as a hotspot whenever I needed net, but kids wanted Netflix ... anyway:
Everything works fine on the wifi: tablet, laptop, wii, kid's kindle, all connect and run fast. My phone will connect, but it's crazy slow. 3g is much faster than what I'm getting through the router. It is connecting, just real slow.

What equipment are you using??? I've usually had the best results from Linksys, but recently found a very good device with great specs from NetGear, which is a Dual-band Wireless-N router.

It is the router provided by my ISP. I don't think it is a problem with the router, though. I have no problem streaming movies on Wii, tablet, and laptop simultaneously, so I think it is doing well. The Maxx, however, feels so slow when the wifi is on. I usually end up turning the wifi off and just running on 3g (poor 4g at home). I was hoping this was just a setting or toggle I had wrong, but dont see any obvious settings out of whack.

I get the same thing. I have a netgear router. The router works great for everything else. My old phone (motorola photon) works fine just my razr maxx and my wifes razr. Both are slow on my home wifi and both keep dropping the signal. I tryed it at my neighbors house and both connect and run fine on his router. I've had this router a long time and connected prob 30 different devices to it and never had a problem. Somthing about the razr that my router just dont like.

You might want to try it at a different location using a different router... hopefully you can have someone at that other location to test how good or bad your smartphone and their other device... just to see if it's your device or your equipment at home. Personally I would never let my ISP use or install any equipment... but I like to know the equipment I have in my home... and I'm not paying the ISP anything extra to RENT their equipment.

If you haven't already done so, try rebooting your router.

Also, have you done a speed test (e.g., with the Speedtest app) on your Maxx while on wifi to see where the bottleneck is? If the download speeds are low compared to what your desktop or laptop gets, then there must be something wrong with the phone's wifi reception. If the download speeds are normal but the phone is slow, then there must be some other problem with the phone's processing.

One other thought--does your router have a QoS (Quality of Service) setting? I'm no IT specialist, but my understanding is that sometimes if QoS is turned on, then some data transmission may be slowed down if the router deems it to be lower priority. I may be way off base here, but you could always just try turning off QoS prioritization if it's an option.

I have a Netgear router and my Maxx runs twice as fast as my Galaxy Nexus off of WiFi. I get 20Megabits on the Maxx and about 5Megabits with the GNex. The Maxx has the best WiFi radio of any smartphone I have used, but different routers can pose problems, just like Bluetooth carkits don't work well with every phone.

Ok I got my router issue taken care of. I switched to WPA2 and now both phones connect and speeds are fine. For some reason my maxx and my wifes standard razr did not like WPA but work fine on WPA2. Hope this helps someone.

Bad wifi connection at home ('Out of Range', bad quality of connection, flipping connection, no access) ? Set your wifi router to WEP-security instead of WPA/WPA2/WPS. More than one Android device (especially with Jelly Bean on it) can't cope with the newer security specifications. The cause is probably Android and not the device as it happens with devices of different manufacturers (though in many cases Made in China). I can't confirm if this WPA-problem occurs evenso on rooted Android devices as I have only tested it on unrooted ones. Try that first before flashing roms etc. The poor support from manufacturers is disappointing. The ideal thing for Android would be that a patch/update for a single problem like this would be easily downloadable (from Google e.g.) and easlily installed on the Android device with the problem. Common people who massively buy these devices often don't have the Linux/Android knowledge to fiddle around with their product.

I had this problem too and what's more weird is it was fine for months then suddenly got to where the wifi was unusable but 4g was fine. I even factory restored the phone. Switching the home router to WPA2 seemed to do the trick, though.
