Battery life

Posted about this over on XDA but so far the Pixel 4 XL is nothing to write home about. My Galaxy S10+ and iPhone 11 Pro are both noticeably better, especially the latter. While in most cases the Pixel 4 XL will get me through the day, it will do so with very, very little battery left at the end of the day. I can easily see how a heavier day of usage will run out before bedtime. Not so with the other two phones. With that said, I do think that Google has some OS level optimizing to do that might improve the situation. My verdict on the battery is just "meh" so far. Not terrible, but not good either.

I was super doubtful about battery on the 4XL coming off of a 2XL, but yesterday was my first full day of use and I got over 4.5 hours of SoT - which is more than enough for me. Granted I have Motion Sense and smooth display off, but still.

Thinking I'll turn on smooth display for today and see how it goes, though it's honestly not a big concern of mine as long as the phone works and does what I need it to do.

I received my pixel 4 and owned a pixel 2XL prior. My battery is amazing to the same. I take it off the charger at 6:30 am. Use it as I normally do through out the day. By 2am I'm down to 2 percent.

Yesterday I used it more than usual and my battery lasted until 12 midnight. That's when I was at 4 percent.

Here are my settings on my pixel 2xl and pixel4
Always on OFF
Music what's playing OFF
Wake when lifted ON
Face recognition ON
Battery saver mode at 25%

Right now it's 12:40am. It's been off the charger since 6:45 and I'm at 85%. I've used Google duo video 4 times, text, browsed the net, listen to YouTube music (stream not downloaded) and made a few calls. So 5 hours and down almost 20%, that's good to me. I do have a belking USBC charger in the car that I DO NOT USE. I have it there in case I'm down to 20 percent and need a charge because I won't be near a charger for a while (aka emergency).

I LOVE this phone.

My experience is the same. Also have the S10+ and 11 Pro Max.

I would agree with "meh", not terrible not great.

need a 4200+ battery on the 5XL or make an XXL or XL+ thats thicker for a bigggg battery. people will never discount battery life as a selling feature so Google make it one

I'm getting about 5.5 hours of screen on time with my usage on the regular Pixel 4. That's with 90hz forced on too. I'm getting better battery life than my Pixel 3. So the doom and gloom about the 2800mAh is unfounded in my opinion.
Not bad at all for regular pixel

People saying they are getting better battery life from their Pixel 3 are overlooking the fact that cell phone battery life degrades 20% in the first year of phone ownership. So obviously a year old Pixel 3 at 80% life, is going to get worse battery life right now than the Pixel 4 at 100% of battery life.

This time next year however, that Pixel 4 battery capacity will be at 80% of what it is currently now.
I can't imagine how a 4 (non-XL) will be after a year of heavy use as it racks up charging cycles and the actual capacity goes to ~2600mAh or less

i would say actual hours used, charged, how its charged, how much its rundown, have alot less to do with that degradation also what temps it is exposed to, etc... leaving your phone on the dash in the hot summer sun everyday cooking will degrade the battery

Lithium-Ion batteries do wear down over time but each phone is used differently thus its tough to say that no phone with have more or less than 20% of dropoff in 365 days, that might be a good average number at best

True with that too. According to the cell phone battery manufacture, the 20% drop is at 400 charge cycles. So if someone loses uses their phone less, they can get more days out of it. Likewise, if someone is charging through 2 cycles per day, or 1.5 per day, then it would less than a year.

Battery life on my Pixel 4XL is totally amazing for me. Compared to my Pixel 2, it's day and night. I used to charge my Pixel 2 times a day. The 4XL can go more than 24h and I still have 30%

Pixel 4 the battery life was average but I upgrade to Pixel 4XL and the battery life was amazing best battery life I ever had on a smartphone and I have had many in my days.

At that point if I really loved the phone I would just pay to have a brand new battery installed so it would have full capacity

Broke down and picked up the 4 (non XL ) this morning and good grief, what the holy no battery life is going on.... I was on the fence re: tiny battery and negative reviews but decided I wanted to try for myself....

I booted it at 50% out of the box and could not even finish setting it up before it needed to go on the charger, where it now sits charging...

Thankfully it has a 2 week return period. If this type of battery life hold true this sucker is on it's way back. I do keep brightness high but so is my current S10e that gets good battery life...

If they're using navigation without the phone connected to power they're doing it wrong...

Unless they're using it on a motorcycle I suppose.

Well show my a car charger that actually charges a phone... every one I’ve ever had just basically maintained the battery

For me the battery life on the Pixel 4 xl has been outstanding. I have had this phone for a week and the battery life has become better over time. Frankly, I have difficulty understanding the negative reviews.
