Battery life

Another reason I said I liked the heck out of a Samsung S5.

You could buy spare batteries cheap.
And carry them with you.
But we need waterproofing so dauym bad.
And yet phone has to look so pretty so you can show it off.

I'd give up waterproofing for that.
If I dropped my phone in the water..they have new phones at the store.

You might be willing to give up water resistantance but the average person doesn't. The S5 was water resistant so you didn't exactly make your point either.

My Point was, you could replace the batteries and carry spare batteries with you.

The hysteria over the Pixel 4's battery life is absolutely ridiculous. I've come from an OG Pixel to the Pixel 4 (regular size) and for me the battery life is fantastic in comparison. Over 4 hours screen on time is easily plenty for me. It's currently 9:27pm and I have exactly 40% battery remaining. I'll be in bed in an hour or so. For people who need more than 5 hours SOT it's time to ask a serious question: do you think you spend too much time on your phone?

I couldn't agree with you more. SOT/time spent off of the charger is significant but I feel like these things often get blown out of proportion.

Also, going from the original Pixel to a Pixel 4... WOW! What a jump you made? What are your thoughts?

My battery life has been fine. I took it off the charger at 900AM this morning, 7 hours ago.

I have 2 hours of screen on time, and I have 67% left. I see no problem getting through my days easily with this phone. BTW, I have the Pixel 4 XL.

Honestly that sounds very lackluster for the XL version. I would be scared to death of the smaller one.

Still doesn’t make a point. They gave chargers that you can carry with you now and are much safe that carrying a battery around.

Also 4hours SOT is awful no matter how you slice it. I get 12 on my iPhone pro max and 5 easily on my note 8. Hell I got a s5 I use and it has about 5,Maybe more. I will check when I get home.

I have a Pixel 4XL, and the battery life issues the reviews raised concerned me, but I did a test and determined it was fine for my use case, since I had a charge from 7:45 am to 11:45 pm, and my phone was at 5% at that time. That seems more than reasonable to me, since I charge it at night while I sleep.

I didn't use them during my test run because I wanted to see how long the battery would last, but typically during the day, I have my phone on a Pixel Stand at work, and when I'm in my home office, I place it on a Pixel Stand I have there. I have a wired charger next to my favorite theater seat in the media room, and another one near my nightstand for overnight charging. I have chargers and a high-capacity portable charger in my laptop bag for when I travel. I never have battery or charger anxiety because I have them everywhere.

That said, I thought 16 hours unplugged was very good. I didn't stress the battery but I used the phone as I normally would. I've never owned a Pixel that I thought had unacceptable battery life, and the battery is not my highest priority when looking to purchase a phone. I wanted the timely software updates and "pure" UI experience of the Pixel, and I take many more pictures with the Pixel than I did before when I was a Galaxy Note devotee simply because the camera is amazing for novice shooters like me. Price is a factor for me, too, and if it wasn't for the significant credit Verizon offered for my trade-in ($450), I would have been perfectly content to stay with my Pixel 3XL. I'm very happy with my Pixel 4XL, and I'll probably hold onto it until new protocols like Wi-Fi 6 and 5G are widely deployed and phones are upgraded to take advantage of them.

So far battery life has been alright for me and my usage. But I did notice this morning that overnight the battery dropped 15% which is pretty steep.

posted this one early and may have gotten lost in today's conversation, so i figured i'd bump it lol.

just wondering how others' standby experience overnight has been.

thanks!

Then that just means the OG Pixel's battery life was even worse!

Or just that it degraded quite a bit over time (understandably) therefore the 2800mAh in the Pixel 4 still feels like a breath of fresh air.

But to me, 4 hours SOT isn't great.

Just for the record, based on my usage I was on track for more than four hours SOT. But I went to bed before I got to this point.

based on my 1st week with the XL, SOT around 5 hours give or take 15mins either way.

For me thats plenty considering im purposefully not charging it at all when i could to see how far it can go. No doubt id like more battery life but battery life is like money, you cant have too much

Yeah it's a huge jump and overall I'm really pleased. The Pixel 4 is a fantastic smartphone. Here's my day 5 impressions:

- This thing is warp speed compared to my OG Pixel. Even gesture nav is quite nice to use because of the fluidity and responsiveness. On my previous device I'd reverted back to three button nav. I still think the back gesture needs work though in Android 10.
- Battery life, compared to my previous device, is light years ahead. Last night I went to bed with it on 37% - I got up at 7:30am and went to bed at 10:40pm. SOT was on target to exceed 4 hours. I have no issues with battery life at this stage. Having said that, I did have one night where I forgot to plug in and it dropped from 50% to 37% overnight. Something went wrong here but I think it might've been a one off.
- The display looks great at lower brightness levels compared to my previous phone. Using it on my couch at night is nicer.
- I have the standard size phone and even this is on the edge of too big. But it's ok.
- Face unlock is way better than a fingerprint sensor. It's near instantaneous. It's not perfect but on balance I find it works more consistently than my previous fingerprint sensor. I wouldn't go back.
- I'm a video producer and photographer so phone cameras typically underwhelm me. I haven't had a chance to really push this thing yet but, so far, in the right conditions I think the Pixel 4 is quite impressive. When it nails portrait mode it's really cool and I've already nabbed a couple of nice shots. I think the video stabilisation is fantastic and the overall video image quality is nice. But people shouldn't kid themselves that these are going to replace "professional" dedicated cameras. They're still miles away in a number of key areas. Smartphones are great consumer cameras though.
- I'm not convinced by motion sense gestures. They're flaky in my experience and need improvement. But I do like the way Soli is integrated with alarms and face unlock. This bit works well.
- 6GB of RAM helps a lot. I'm not left wanting more RAM.
- The design is lovely in its own way. I like Google's "IKEA-esque" design language in their products. I think it's more playful and not so serious. I have the white version and love the coloured button contrasting with the black outer edge. The first party cases are great too.
- The speakers are a massive improvement over my last phone, both in terms of volume and overall sound quality. I can even detect a hint of bass! This has probably been one of the nicest surprises.
- I think 90hz displays are a little over-hyped. I like it but it's not a game changer.
- I quite like the squeeze to access the assistant
- Haptics are nice in this phone
- The next gen assistant isn't available in Australia yet. Sigh.
- I didn't think I'd use it but I've modified the default theme slightly - just the icons and colour tint. It's nice to be able to personalise the device like this without being overwhelmed by too many options.
- NFC noticeably improved.
- I'm getting a wireless charger today and I can't wait to use it.
- Did I mention this thing is fast?

I had to replace my car charger because Google changed something preventing some Quick charge 3.0 chargers from charging Pixels rapidly. My Pixel 3 was like you said, barely just keeping battery level flat.

I just bought this one below and can confirm my phone now says 'charging rapidly' again and it increases charge even when screen is on. It's just as if plugged into a wall outlet.

I like this one because it's super descrete, low profile, and flush inside the car outlet.

Today was the Second day with my 4XL, the First day where i started with 100% and didn't plug it in at all. All default settings. Dark mode enabled. Battery Saver set to turn on at 30% (how I had my 2XL setup).

I had 4.67 Hours of SoT with 31% left when I got home from work. I used GPS a lot and was either watching a YouTube video or had one playing in the background nearly the entire work shift. I'm currently sitting at 24% with 5.25 Hours of SoT. This is about on par with my 2XL which I purchased brand new from Google earlier this year.

Battery issues are overrated and the people that come here and do not have the P4 XL and say it sounds lackluster have a case of P4 envy. The sky is falling mentality of battery life keeps threads like this going on and on....everyone will come on and say they got 5 hrs of SOT. Nothing to see here move along....

If they're using navigation without the phone connected to power they're doing it wrong...

Unless they're using it on a motorcycle I suppose.

I don't plug my phone in when using GPS because it can do that, and still have power for the day. And the next day. And sometimes the day after that.

No envy here, although the Pixel 4 is the first one that actually looks cool (IMO). Lots of cool stuff going on with the radar and stuff too. That being said, I've actually maxed out at almost 10 hours of SOT, though my average is only about 5 due to heavy gaming and video use.

There is no way, NO WAY that you got even close to 10 hours SOT with your Pixel 4.
