Best Messaging App

I just started using Evolve SMS on my Motorola Nexus 6. I like it better than the Google Message app because you can create custom message templates and save them. Makes it easier than having to type out. It has a nice clean interface, and seems simple to use.

Thanks for turning me on to Textra, this coming from a long time Handcent user.

Even with my very simple texting needs I find text it wonderful. Specifically that I can swipe away a text and it delete from my notification bar, rather than having to open the app to delete it from my notification bar

Yep. Textra is pretty awesome. They have done a good job adding features people want.

For the people using Message+ from Verizon, are you able to make the notification tone longer than 5 sec? I have a notification tone that lasts around 30 sec but I can't get it to play till the end.

I like using tetra or evolve but recently I've been using pulse it's in beta at the moment but it adds cross device usage like hangouts or imessage but with text messages. Pretty cool

It's been out of beta for weeks already

Am I then in the Dark Ages? And I should try Textra?

If you're in the Dark Ages then I'm right there with you. I've used Handcent for years - no reason to change. That said though, I'm now curious about the answers here and am checking out both Chomp and Textra.

FOLLOW-UP

Looks like no one app does everything. I like Textra save for the lack of scheduled recurring messages. Chomp has that, but lacks some of the niceties that Textra has.

What is great about Pulse is that it has a web app and Chrome extension

Yeah I'm liking it so far. There are two things I might request from the dev: custom vibrate pattern and more granular settings for send delay. I'm used to my 1 second delay from textra and vibe customization.

Does Textra have the ability to schedule a text? I use GoSMS, but I really need that scheduling...

NO, it does not. I need it to send a text every night at 11pm - and it can't be set up to do that.

However, you can get apps that do ONLY that if you want, and I'm trying that right now. Textra in concert with an app called (strangely enough) "SMS Scheduler".

I guess it depends what the poster meant by 'schedule'. Textra allows one-time schedule, but not a recurring one. I can arrange for a text to go out at 11pm 3 days from now, however, not at 11pm on every Tuesday. I've always wondered why the developers do not accommodate that.

Yes, you're absolutely right, and I should apologize for saying the above without clarifying. I did find, after typing that, where the place was to do it one time (I hadn't found that yet).

That said, I've been playing with Textra for about the last 18 hours and am a complete convert now. What a fabulous app. Love everything about it; the feel, the look, and the features. I can get my scheduling need from SMS Scheduler.. everything else I need from an SMS app is in Textra - and in much cooler form. Totally sold. Thanks to both the OP and all who chimed in strongly about Textra!

Oh I did not mean any offense. No worry.
On the other hand, if you like Textra, you'd like Chomps, the granddaddy of them all. You can customize that app to pieces. And it has message scheduling that allows recurring messages.

Hi all,

I am almost a month in with my Pixel coming from a long stint with iPhone. I am looking for recommendations on a messaging app. Coming from iPhone I just used iMessage and the built in app which I am also doing now with the Pixel. Is there a need to go to a different app such as Hangouts, Allo, Facebook Messenger, etc? 90% of my texting is just simple text with the occasional picture or emoji. I would say my texts are split about 50/50 to and from those on iPhone and Android, maybe a little more from iPhone users. And honestly I don't know what my Android friends use but know my iPhone friends stick with the iOS messaging app.

Am I missing something by using Google's messaging app. Would you recommend something else?

Thanks.
I like using Hangouts. It works well for me especially for sending MMS files using my Google Voice number.

As someone who just converted to Textra, I can't imagine something so much better! Since you've used both apparently, would you mind giving more detail comparing the two?
