In rooting other hardware I have always been able to run a terminal app that allows all unix commands. With the S4 some of the comands are not recognized - such as passwd for instance. Anyone have any ideas?

I use Termux for a local shell. You aren't going to get all the commands and tools you would with the GNU Core Utilities. Install BusyBox Pro for an expanded number of commands. You get a BASH shell with a lot of the fundamentals. BusyBox is a monolithic tool that acts like many command line utils.

I much prefer to run an SSH server and my favorite terminal app on a PC. Big screen. (I like SecureCRT.) Big keyboard. It (sort of) beats the Sparc 20 I worked on in the old days! If you want a huge mess of servers in one tool, check out Servers Ultimate.
