I'm trying to help my roommate root his Tmo S2 (T989). Have come across TWRP and CWM. Which one is best? How can I get a zip or tar for latest CMW 6.0.3.6??? Can't possibly do IMG file if I not rooted! Instructions on Cyanogenmods website on how to root and install T989 have been terrible for me. Have soft bricked with their instructions. Any help would be very much appreciated! Thanks!

So you aren't rooted yet at all?
I like CWM over TWRP, but that is just me.

I was able to root with TWRP via odin but I've only been able to install CWM 6.0.3.1 because its the only one that I have found that has a tar file to use with odin. Could you help me figure out how to get latest CWM (6.0.3.6) on T989?

Try downloading ROM Manager from Play.

This will only work once I'm rooted correct? I brought him back to full stock after running into "firmware upgrade encountered an issue.." message and couldn't get off from it. So I'll TWRP and DL ROM Manager and install CWM 6.0.3.6.....I hope this is right, lol!

BTW, THIS is how I tried rooting his T989 ALL DAY yesterday....*sigh*.....

Thanks for your help Golfdriver! :)

I will look at the link later. Yes ROM manager is a root only app. So if you are unrooted, it won't work.

I almost forgot to check your link. I am curious if the method was for an older version of Android for your phone. If that is the case, root won't work or stick long.

It was a command based (Win CMD) way instead of using Odin. I don't know why people don't like using Odin?!?! I've always had great results using it!!

Did ROM manager work?

I ended up using latest TWRP. What I was forgetting to flash was GAPPS zip the night before. Flashed CM10.1.2 and Gapps for this version and it went through. I prefer using CWM but keeping TWRP so I can get some experience with it.

If I wanted to flash latest CWM, I will DL ROM Manager and flash latest CWM img file, correct?? I've never used img files, thats why I'm asking. Been around almost 2 years since I rooted my Epic 4G, lol!

Here is the thing...I don't know if doing what I suggested will flash CWM over TWRP. Never tried that. If you got it rooted, and it works with TWRP, leave it be.
Sometimes the more you tweak something, the more it may get messed up.

I'll take your word for it and THANKS for your help!! :)

If you're simply using CWM to flash 4.2.2 JB ROMs, you're fine. However, you might want to use the latest TWRP if you plan to use a 4.3 JB ROM as CWM isn't really known to format partitions correctly, which can lead to a bad flash or a softbrick.

I flashed android 4.3 super nexus ROM using cwm and it worked great! After flashing a ROM and it doesn't run smoothly try booting into recovery and going to mounts and storage and go to format / system and run that. After that reinstall ROM ( gapps and su also if necessary). Everything works great!!

Here ya go... CWM 6.0.4.3, in tar format. Please rename it after you grab it and remove the .zip extension... it's NOT zipped, but AC's forum doesn't allow TARs, sooooo...

BTW, if you have access to a Unix, Linux, or Mac, you can simply take the recovery img file, rename it recovery.img and tar it up.... just remember to name it exactly as I listed, or you could seriously mess up your phone.

What I ran...
Code:
tar cvf recovery-clockwork-6.0.4.3-hercules.tar recovery.img
