BEWARE - Many bad USB-C Cables Out There!!

Bought mine from China for cheap. They work like a charm. Been using them for the last month on 6P and 5X no issue whatsoever. I wouldn't get caught up in the mythology.

There's no "mythology" ... either your cable has the correct pullup resistor, or it doesn't.

And yes, all cables will "work," you just won't know there is any problem until your charger/USB-port/motherboard/etc., dies.

I also agree this isn't mythology. At the same time, I haven't seen any reports on the forums or the internet in general about trashed computers or other damaged hardware. To be fair, I haven't looked. But if this was a high risk event I'd expect to see reports of hardware damage . . . somewhere.

I bought a usb-c to usb-c cable from the google store and it has this blue connector/tab thing on it that for the life of me I can't figure out it's purpose. I know that another part of the cable can snap onto it, but why?

For a photo here's the same thing except on a monoprice cable 130101.jpg

It's a builtin "wire tie."

Loop up your cable. Snap in the other end to the clip... voila! No unraveling cable.

I got a refund from oneplus yesterday for the three cables I bought. No questions asked.

I did as well minus the shipping charge. If theyre defective, they shouldve added that as well IMO.

I received a refund for my two cables. I was rather surprised to get it; since I had filled out the web form that was linked that I wanted a refund. I'd almost forgotten that I requested the refund, and heard nothing from OnePlus, but was notified yesterday of a refund to my account. It took me a moment to recall what it was for, particularly as the company that my payment initially was charged through, and who issued the refund, was "Da Sheng International Trade." I, too, was surprised that no questions were asked and that there was no request to return the cables.

I get it that it's a wire tie but I've tried it and it doesn't work very well. A typical wire tire goes around all the other wires when looped, this just attaches to one. I tried it and the loop just unraveled.... I guess I'm doing it wrong.

Loop your cable so it stacks on top of itself. Then cross the two ends over the top, and clip together. It should hold the loops together so they don't unravel...

Nope, not defective, designed for different hardware.

It is really somewhere inbetween. I agree, they aren't defective but, at the same time, they don't meet the standards for the USB-C plug and so can cause those devices that use the standard to break. I agree, they are designed for the OnePlus 2 and should work fine with those devices.

Will the one plus cables break the phone's charging ability or the usb that it's attached to?

Your assessment is incorrect. It became defective as soon as they called it a "USB-C cable." USB-C has strict conformance standards, to which their cable does not meet.

If they wanted to call it a "OnePlus 2 Charging Cable" that would've been fine. But the fact that they decided to call it a USB-C cable meant they are required to meet the USB-C spec. They chose not to meet the USB-C spec. Hence the cable is defective.

It's either USB-C compliant or it's not. There's no gray area here.

My understanding, from what I recall, is that it is more likely to damage/break the charger rather than the device it is charging.

I'll give you false advertising. Otherwise I'll agree to disagree. The cable was made for their product and works fine for that purpose.
