Bingo! I finally figured out how to get things straight in my Droid X 2.2 update

Fabrain... Great post... I followed the directions, step by step on page 1 and everything went great... however, I have just one question that I haven't been able to find in the 23 pages of replies.

I backed up the data on the SD card using Backup assist... now, How do I restore the data and my applications and phone settings... back to the way I had them prior to the format...?

Questions:
1. Some of those were free apps as well as paid apps.. how do I go about restoring them
2. Phone settings such as ring tones, profiles, etc..
3. I had bluetooth setup in my car, do I need to set that up again

I'm hoping there is something I missed in one of the posts that shows how to restore... or do I need to locate and reinstall each app and setting again.. UGH.....???

Thanks...

I agree with the others that have said that Fabrian's approach helps, but unfortunately there is still a lot of bugginess with Froyo on Droid X, particularly with the lagginess and stuttering in the UI. And the improvement seems to be temporary. Sometimes the system will still slow down.

I've noticed the stuttering seems to be worst when using something like Pandora over 3G, and I also notice it most in the browser and twitter clients, so I wonder if there is some bug related to the 3G radio.

I'd love to go back to 2.1 at this point.

So just to clarify - the people who have done this no longer have issues with the Battery Manager FCing? I went through the steps this morning, and I'm still having that issue pop up. Maybe I'll try again and clear the cache beforehand...

Well, here's an update to my situation.

After being on the phone with Verizon and Motorola CS, they were unable to resolve my problems. They said it was something to do with the phone so now they're sending me a new one and I will do this process with the new phone.

I think backup assistant is something to be avoided (my opinion). All you have to do is connect to your PC/Mac, make sure the phone's USB setting is mass storage. You should see the contents of your SD card as a drive on your computer.. Drag/drop/copy etc. the contents of your SD card to your computer.

After you format the card, you can then selectively put back some of the folders that YOU backed up onto the SD card. You can move the application folders, camera folder, ringtones...whatever you want to put back - but only the ones you know are an application folder or personal data folder (pictures etc.). For example, if you use beautiful widgets, launcher pro or note everything, you can move those folders off of your SD card, to you computer and then put them back after the process in the first post - that's ok. Just don't save or move any standalone files on the SD card or folders that you know for sure you don't need. *you will still have to install those applications, these folders contain data only for those apps*

If you don't use AppBrain, you should. Just makes life easier - alternatively you could just jot down your free apps and go get them after your reset. Your paid apps are tied to your google account, so they should show up when you go to Market-->downloads. Any other apps that may have been purchased via PayPal you might just have to go look for, but you saved those emails... right? ;)

Bluetooth, profiles etc.. You'll have to reconfigure those.

For those of you who don't like the stuttery performance of the stock launcher, Launcher Pro will fix that for you...go get it, you'll be happy. Search the Market for "launcherpro" just like that with no spaces.

Agreed. All things considered, I would go back to 2.1 as well.

As mentioned above, install Launcher Pro. Much of the slowness and stutter will go away.

I've only seen my battery manager FC once. I have not seen it since doing all of this nonsense. I'd give it another shot.

Ya... The other problem is that some people just plain cannot fix their issues. Verizon did confirm to me that some users received a corrupt download... Take that for whatever it's worth. In my case, my 2 month old pristine DX was a lost cause after the update. A refurb was just fine..

Here's something I don't understand and I was hoping someone might have an idea. I was on OTA 2.2 rooted. I wanted to try this and was sure I would loose root and have to re-root. I followed the instructions from the OP on post #1 to the "T".

Formated the SD card 1st.
Unchecked all the back up stuff.
Did the wipe.
Did not log in.
Unchecked the back up stuff again.
Logged in.

What I don't understand is my phone remained rooted! How could that be possible? And don't ask me if I am sure I did it all right. I am very nervous about stuff like this - so I follow the instructions.

How could I wipe all my data and start from scratch and retain root?

I did same thing and having the same problem, how is it still rooted???

Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk

I dont believe you ARE rooted. The SU icon stays, but if you open it no apps should have permission and no 'root only' apps should work. This was my experience until I did the 'one-click' 2.2OTA root. Now I am rooted again waiting for Birdman's ROM.

Sorry to bump this- but no one was able to address it and I am wondering if there are any more thoughts?

I AM rooted. It is not just that the icon is there. I followed the original procedure to the T (not the new and improved directions). I still had SU and I was able to run all my rooted apps wo a hitch.

Just wondering- if I retained root- then how could I have a "clean" install?

I did this a week or so ago and my battery manager force closed on me this morning.

I just got my Droid X yesterday with 2.2 already installed. Do I still need to do Fabrian's factory reset process?

I say no because Fabrian's factory reset is really just trying to do the cleanest install of 2.2 to minimize any issues with "upgrading".

Since your phone came fresh with 2.2, no need.

Finally got around to doing this today. While I really was not having any major problems, I have noticed an improvement since following the steps. One big thing I noticed was my wifi isnt constantly dropping at home.
I would give one piece of advice though, double check to make sure your contacts were actually backed up to your google acct. I had to load up an old blackberry backup from my computer to get my contacts back.

Recently ny X has been super buggy. Like buggy enough to have to pull the battery daily. I have no idea what's going on. I may try this method this weekend.

Question: Would using My Backup Pro to restore ny apps or some data defeat the purpose? Also, Launcher Pro is working fine for everyone after doing this, right?

Well, I did it. We shall see if any of the bugs are squashed. The gallery is scrolling much smoother than before. It used to actually stop and try to load the older pictures while scrolling. I hope this isn't just temporary.

2.2 upgrade

I have the droidx and updated to the 2.2. I wish it would let me uninstall the update. Now I'm having problems with wifi. It see's the router and connects, then 5 seconds later disconnects over and over again on and off. I tried the instructions for applying the 2.2 upgrade over the 2.1. Everything worked great, but the wifi, still no go. O well. Verizon is sending me another phone with 2.1 on it. Until they have a for sure fix, i think i'll stick with the 2.1. I really need the wifi at home. We have no service for cell, here.
Your Forums are helpful. Thank you

Sadly I'm still having issues even after a few factory resets. I'm just writing them off as issues with Froyo that need to be fixed in general.

I'm having issues with my google search lagging horribly, even though I've cleared the cache out properly.

Having issues selecting contacts from said google search as well. Kicks me back to the search screen when I select them from the menu.

Having a ton of issues with my music player just crashing and locking up. Especially if I use the visualizations and the like. It's somewhat baffling.

Otherwise I figured I'll just deal until the real fixes show up. I've mostly lost hope that the hacking community will find a way to unlock the bootloader on this thing, So sadly, we're stuck at the mercy of what motorola feels we should be running in terms of stability and performance.

That's life eh?

I actually got VZ to swap me out for a refurb Incredible. Ya, I said it. No matter how much I try to forget about the X, I still miss the crap out of it. VZ will swap me back into another refurb X if I chose, but I just don't know.

One of the best things about the Incredible is I haven't had to reboot or pull a battery in days... the worst is every refurb they send me has some kind of refurb defect... 1st wouldn't boot, second has the optical trackpad raised up and ripping my thumb to peices... Man, talk about no luck.

I want to get back to the DX pretty bad and try to stay with 2.1 as long as possible, but there's one thing that has been turning me off...big time.

I worked with Motorola for DAYS. I finally got to level 3 after talking to two mangers. I was about to walk the level three tech through showing him some repeatable bugs.

FIRST he says, I can't find a DX with a charged battery.
SECOND he says, I only have two here and they both have 2.1.

THIS WAS 3RD LEVEL MOTOROLA SUPPORT!!!!

CBF, I don't wanna keep the Incredible, but I'm am honestly at a loss for making a decision. FFS.

That is exactly one of the bugs I was trying to show Motorola 3rd level support when they said they only have a 2.1 test unit. Could you believe that crap??

Pointless because 2.1 worked fine in that scenario.

Good luck bro, and just remember... for now if you run into some funky behavior, boot into recover and wipe cache partition. Works every time.

Yeah I can't seem to figure it out myself, However if you have the patience to just click the photo of the person instead of selecting their name? You can go directly to their contact info after selecting their contact info from the little foldout screen that will pop up.

Not the most elegant solution. But Factory resetting is obviously not the issue here. Something is causing the problems, and we just have to wait and see if Motorola decides to address them in a timely manner or let them persist as people trade their handsets in.

Did the factory restore, per the instructions on first page of this thread, 48 hours ago. Big improvement in speed and none of the little glitches that seem to have plagued the dx since the upgrade have popped back up.

Also decided to run without LauncherPro and go back to the stock homescreens. What a difference.

Also a noticeable increase in battery life ... been up 31 hours, and although phone use has been admittedly light due to the weekend, I'm at 60% on the extended battery with wifi and gps on the entire time.

This is an awesome phone the way it has been running since the reset ... he says, while waiting for the other shoe to drop ...
