Bionic's still coming, is defintely new hardware - XT875

That is my understanding too, and if the bionic is the same, I will surly never consider it. I don't care if weptop is possible, but if I have to allocate resources to maintain it plugged in or not, I don't want it. To bad, because motorola had been on such a good roll :(

Seems almost everyone has this 'understanding' but no one can provide any documentation to substantiate it.

Edit: Also, Android allocates resources all the time to things that you may rarely, if ever, actually use. One cursory read of the countless task killer threads on any Droid forum makes that very clear.

Hi, folks. No new news for you, but let's all take a deep breath, eh? Else we're going to have to turn this car around. :p

I don't recall an XDA link and, on a VERY cursory search didn't see anything that looked like an explanation of how WebTop worked.

I do recall the motodev link alludes to the fact that WebTop is always running.

However, always running is a FAR cry from 'I've got half your RAM and you can't use it for anything else.'

Here's a link to CK's post. It's actually a quote from XDA and a link to Motorola's dev site giving an explanation.

http://forum.androidcentral.com/mot...ew-droid-bionic-form-factor-5.html#post878874

I think the half the RAM comment grew out of a comment from a Motorola rep regarding the Atrix. Whether this is true is still uncertain as far as I know.

I think either way, there are resources being used unnecessarily for those not using WebTop (of which I would be one). So, the full RAM is not available to non-users. Whether that's half, two-thirds, three-quarters, I have no idea. And for those that like to utilize the full capability of their phone, they don't want to be burdened with something they're not using. Also, your point about apps running in the background anyway is true, however, I suspect that the WebTop OS is a bigger resource hog than most apps that are running in the background waiting to be deallocated.

Wow, you are wrong in correcting me, and just to add insult to injury you are wrong in your bad information.

Qualcomm provides the baseband chips, which is what the discussion was about.

Oh, and the X2 uses a NVidia application processor not TI.
correct. I wasn't injured or insulted.

If the pictures are legit and the camera is really capable of 1080p video this agrees with the performance tests that were done stating the processor speed was 1.2ghz which then results in the processor having to be the 4460.

Atrix is, do you think the bionic will run a different kind of WebTop? Lol on explaining the differences on how android runs, lol! Thanks;)

Soo. If you guys didnt know, Verizon's been giving people Loyalty Discounts. And my dad went ahead and bought the Droid X2 with my upgrade and put it on his number (primary line + got $50 off a new phone) on Saturday. And in the mail we get a $50 off for loyalty thing...

Great timing....... and it expires 6/30/11 and the bionic's not coming out anytime soon. FML

This is a good thread, let's ignore those calling names, and move forward please! I love checking this one, and mods will take care of the children.

Just wish if they will say if Bionic is coming before or after tier pricing.

So i can decide right now. I dont want to wait down the line then find out its after and get the Droid Charge, if i can just go ahead and get it now.

I got the Droid Charge and returned it. When I went back to my Droid X by activating it myself a voice on the phone kept talking about my coverage still being LTE. You might get grandfathered even if you return it.

Well, since no one on any of these forums seems capable of an intelligent conversation regarding webtop I am done talking about it after this post.

Atix is what??? running webtop? Yes it is. losing half of it's RAM to webtop? Doubtful. Since none of the people that will espouse this viewpoint seem capable of substantiating it with any kind of real evidence, I will post this last bit from the XDA FAQ on the Atrix. I am NOT vouching for the validity of this statement. I really I have no idea if this answer is correct or not, but at least it sounds much more likely than - "webtop takes 512Mb of your RAM from you forever."

"Q: The atrix has 1GB of ram. Is all of that memory used on the phone or is it like what was rumored and some of it is reserved for the webtop? (submitted by RacecarBMW)

A: The webtop shares memory with the phone side. There is about 800mb free for use by both, with roughly 200mb reserved for system processes."

Edit: As for you second comment - I was merely pointing out that the people that are saying they don't want things taking resources that they don't plan on using, i.e., Webtop, have things taking resources that they aren't using all the time. Where is your indignation at those processes taking your valuable resources??

You may be on to something.

Why would webtop take half your ram, but make no mention of taking any fraction of your processor speed? That seems odd to me.

I respect everyone's opinion including yours, though there is a ton of brilliant folks here that can engage your opinion. Weptop is a resource hog and I would like to be able to have the option to kill it, there is no reason it needs to constantly access RAM when not being used. We want a clean mean running machine. I look at how the Atrix handles WT and if the bionic is the same, I pass:) I am sure it will still be capable. Let me know when you find out how the bionic runs WT K;)

Did someone say WT takes half here? Who and what is their source lol!

Exactly. Webtop is sharing RAM aka using up resources. Throw Gingerbread on top of it and you get a resource hungry OS. So if you get 2 resource hungry OS's what will be the end result? A handset that is starved for resources and will constantly be fighting for them. There's no other way around it. Motorola isn't going to allow the end user to disable the enviroment via terminal so it will constantly run which is a drag.

Hopefully the TI OMAP can handle the environment better than the Tegra. That lag bugs me. Its not an overly offensive lag but that ever present stutter that drove me nuts on the Atrix. I'm loooking for butter smooth ala iOS on an Android handset. That would be a dream :)

On my XOOM, Which has 1GB of RAM in it. Whenever i go to Manage applications, It only shows a total of 578MB of RAM.

Can Android even handle 1GB of RAM? If not, Does it really matter if some of it is partitioned to Webtop?
